This invention relates to material working apparatus, and more particularly to apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material.
,The primary object of this invention is to 6 provide a simple, efficient and readily adjustable and adaptable apparatus whereby blanked articles of various shapes and dimensions. may be ejected from blanked material. H In accordance with one embodiment of this invention, as used in connection with a, compound punch and die, there is provided an apparatus comprising means for supporting a strip of blanked material carrying the blanked articles as: it issues from the. punch and die into. engagement with an element or a, plurality of elements yieldably and adjustably mounted to suit the shape and dimensions of the articles to be ejected from the material, the elementor elements continuously bearing against the .20 blankedmaterial and pressing the articles individually therefrom and through an aperture in the material supporting means.

In the accompanying drawing, referring particularly to Fig. 1, one embodiment of this inven: tion is illustrated as used in connection witha compound blanking and perforating punch and die indicated at 10 which is operatively connected to a punch press, a frame 11 and a reciprocatory ram 12 of the punch .press being fragmentarily illustrated. The compound blanking and perforating. punch and die 10 and the punch press are of a well known type and the details of construction thereof have been omitted from the present application, since it is not essential to a complete understanding of .the present invention. v p
a It is believed sufficient herein to state that in the operationof the punch and die 10 of the type mentioned, a strip of material 13' is intermittently advanced in a horizontal plane therethrough-from right to. left, as shown. in Fig. 1 by means well known in the art. At the termination of each advance movement of the material 13, the punch and die :l0lis operated during an advance and return movement of the punch press ram 12 to perforate and blank an article 14 (Fig. 3) out of the material and reinsert the article therein. The. article ejecting apparatus, indicated generallyby the numeral 1'? .(Fig. 1) in the present embodiment thereof as used in. connection with a material working apparatus of the type of above referred to punch and die, is supported on a shelf .orbracket; 18 fixed to the punch press frame 11 at: the left side thereof. Secured to the upper surface ofthe bracket 18 by means of screws 19, one of which is indicated in Fig.. 1, isa base plate20 for the ejecting apparatus 17. The base-plate20 at opposite ends is provided with-arms 21 and22- .(Figs. land 2) between which and resting on; the uppersurface ofthe base plate is an interchangeable plate 25 which supports and. guides the strip material and which is. clamped. to the base plate by a pair of screws 26 threadedthrough the arm 21 and engaging the adjacent end. surface of the plate 25, the opposite; end of the latter being thereby clamped against thearm 22. Formed in the upper surface otthe plate 25, intermediate the arms 21 4 and 22, is a depressed surface 27 which lies sub-. stantially the plane of the under surface of the strip material 31 which is intermittently advanced from. the punch and die 10. The material 13 is supported on the surface 27 and its lateral edges extend into guide channels 28 (Fig. 3) provided in the die plate 25 at each side of the surface 27. Formed in the surface 27 of the plate 25 is an aperture 29 to permit the articles 14 ejected from the strip material 13 to drop through a comparatively large aperture 30 provided in the .base 20 and into an aligned aperture 31 in the. bracket 18 to a receptacle (not shown). The strip material supporting and guiding .plate 25 is interchangeably mounted on the base plate 20 so that other plates 25 constructedto accommodate strip material 13 of different widths or to accommodate articles 14 of different sizes or contours; the different plates 25 having the'guide channels 28 spaced to suit a particular width of strip material and apertures 29 tosuit the particular size-or shape. of the article which. is being ejected from the strip material.
Mounted above and fixed to the plate 25 at oppositesides thereof are mounting bars 33 which are supported upon the upper ends of intertween the furcations at each end is a bolt'38" which is inserted in one of a series of spaced apertures 40 formed in each oithe bars 33. The
bolts are screwed up tight after the desired positioning of the bar 36 longitudinally and laterally of the strip material '13 in accordance with the particular position of the articles 14 in the strip material. I
Referring particularly to Fig. 3, the roller plunger assembly 37 in one embodiment thereof comprises a body member 41 having an externally threaded stem portion 42 and a head or. nut portion 43. The member .41:is threadedinto an opening in the bar 36 for vertical adjustment and is maintained in adjusted position bya pair-of lock nuts at either side of the bar.36.-..:Slidable in a. rectangular shaped aperture 46 formed in the member 41 is a shouldered rod which has a threaded reducediportion. 48 at its upper end, a cylindrical reduced portion 49 .at its lower end and an intermediate rectangular shaped portion 50 fitting the aperture46 in the member 41. Secured to the lower end ofthe cylindricalrod portion 49 is .a roller supporting bracket-53 formed with a split collar portion 54 (Fig. 1)
1 which is'clamped to the rod portion 49 by a screw 55.. Journaled in. a bifurcated. lower portionof thebracket 53 is a roller 56 which when the ejecting apparatus is in use continually bears upon the strip of material 13 as itis advanced thereunder. Surrounding the cylindrical'rod portion 491s a compression spring 57 opposite ends of which bear .against washers surrounding the rod portion 49 and engaging the lower and-upper -,end. surfaces of the. body member 41 and the bracket 53.v Threaded ontothe upper rod portion48 is a hand grip member 60-provided with a rectangular or oblong portion 61 the under surface of which by engaging the upper surface of the head 43 determines the. lower limit of motion of the roller56. The hand grip member 60 also serves to hold ther'oller 56 in its inoperative position. For .doing this it is drawn up-'- wardly and turned-a quarter turn so that its lower portion 61 rests. on a pair of pins 62 mounted in the head 43.
In adjusting the parts just described. the member 41 is adjusted vertically: to a position in which the desired tension is placed on the roller 56. The hand grip memberSO is then adjusted vertically to a point where the: roller 56 in its lowermost'position extends far enough to press the blanks from the strip of blanked material but not so far but that it will readily roll up the side of thelopening uponiiurther' movement of the strip material. -When the member 60 is being rotated to make this adjustment it is raised sufficiently to clear the tops of the'pins62.
In Figs. 4 and 5 another. embodiment of the roller bracket portion of the ejectingrapparatus hereinbefore described, is illustrated which is used in another setup of the apparatus for ejecting articles of greater length than the article 14' of Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Referring to Fig. 4, a'bracket 65 which is interchangeable with thebracket 53, hereinbeiore described; on the cylindrical rod bracket 53. The lower end of the bracket 65 is formed with'acylindrical portion 69 for supporting another roller bracket similar to the brackets 67 when it is desirable to provide three rollers due to the length of the article being ejected or other characteristics thereof. It will be obvious that either the two or three roller arrangement maybe used to eject articles from material wherein two or three articles are blanked from the material, the articles extending either laterally or longitudinally of the material. In case the articles are formed in an angular direction in the strip of material 13 the roller brackets 53 and 65 may be adjusted on the rod portion 49 to support the roller or rollers 56tocorrespond with the position of the articles in the strip of material. When adapting the ejecting apparatus for an article of greater length by means of .the embodiment illustratedin Figs. 4 and 5, it'is also necessary to mount another strip material supporting and guiding plate 25 on the base plate 20 which maybe readily accomplished in the manner previously described. 'Also, due to the greater height of the roller bracket assembly illustrated in Figs. 4-and 5, the mounting bars 33 will have .to be supported at a correspondingly greater height. This may be easily provided-for by removing thecylin drical columns 34 and mounting columns of a suitable length.
-It is believed that the operation of the herein described apparatus will be clearly understood from the above descriptionv wherein the several embodiments thereof have been described for use inthe ejecting of the articles 14 from the strip of material 13 issuing from the compound blanking and perforating punch'and die 10. Briefly described, the operation of the apparatus after adjusting and adapting it to the particular dimensions of the strip of material and the articles or the arrangement of the articles supported therein as hereinbefore described is as follows: In the intermittent advance of the strip of material from the-punch and die 10-the articles 14 successively pass underneath the spring 'pressedroller or rollers 56 which'continuously bear on the strip of material and as each article comes into engagement with the roller or rollers, it is pressed or ejected individually from the material and it passes through the apertures 30 and 31 formed in the base 26 and the bracket'18, respectively, to a receptacle (not shown) Although the preferred embodiments of this invention have been described for use in connection with the ejection of blanked articles supported in blanked strip'material from the material as it issues from a material working apparatus, such asa compound punch and die, it will be under stood that the invention is capable of other applications within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is: v i 1. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, and a pressure element engagingthe material arranged directly opposite the material'supporting means and effectiveupona relative sliding movement between the element and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material through an aperture in the support.
2. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, and a spring pressed element continuously engaging the material and effective upon a relative movement between the element and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material.
3. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, a reciprocably mounted spring pressed plunger carrying a roller engaging the material and effective upon a relative movement between the roller and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material, and means for adjusting the pressure of the plunger and thereby the roller against the material.
4. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material during a longitudinal advance thereof, and a reciprocably mounted spring pressed plunger carrying a member having a rolling engagement withthe advancing material and effective to eject the articles from the material during its advance.
5. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, a reciprocably mounted spring pressed plunger carrying a roller engaging the material and effective upon a movement of the material past the roller for engaging the articles to eject them from the material, means for adjustably supporting the plunger relative to the plane of the material, and means for adjusting the pressure of the plunger and thereby the roller against the material.
6. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, a base plate, means interchangeably mounted thereon for supporting'and guiding material having certain dimensions and carrying therein articles blanked therefrom of a particular size during a longitudinal advance thereof, and an element yieldably engaging the material and effective to eject the articles successively from the material at a predetermined position thereof through an aperture provided in the supporting and guiding means.
7. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, an element yieldably engaging the material and effective upon a relative movement between the element and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material, means for supporting the element, means rotatably mounted on the element for moving the same upon the supporting means out of operative engagement with the material, and means carried by the supporting means and cooperating with the means rotatable on the element when the latter means is predeterminedly rotated after a withdrawal of the element from operative engagement with the material for retaining the element in its inoperative position.
8. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the mamrial, a spring pressed plunger, and a plurality of elements adjustable on the plunger at either side thereof and in a direction at right angles to its longitudinal axis for engaging the material and effective upon a relative movement between the elements and the plunger and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the mate-. rial.
9. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked articles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, means for adjustably supporting in spaced relation with the material a spring pressed plunger, means for adjustably mounting on the plunger at varying distances from and at each side of its longitudinal axis a plurality of rollers for engaging the material and effective upon a relative movement between the rollers and the plunger and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material, and means on the plunger for supporting a roller to be arranged between the aforesaid rollers and likewise for engagement with the material.
10. In a material working apparatusmeans for forming articles from sheet material advanced thereto, and means for thereafter ejecting the formed articles mounted therein from the material as it is advanced therefrom, comprising means for supporting the material in its advance from the forming means, and a spring pressed plunger engaging the material advancing from the forming means and effective to eject the articles from the material.
11. In an apparatus for ejecting blanked arti- 110 cles from blanked material, a base plate, means interchangeably mounted thereon for supporting and guiding material having certain dimensions and carrying therein blanked articles of a particular size, and an element yieldably engaging the 115 material and effective upon a relative movement between the element and the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material.
12. In an apparatus for ejectingblankedarticles from advancing blanked material, a supporting 120 member over which the material is advanced, and an element movable at an angle to the path of movement of the material and bearing on the material during its movement over said supporting member to eject the blanked articles from the advancing material.
13. In an apparatusfor ejecting blankedarticles from blanked material, means for supporting the material, and a pressure element having a sliding engagement with the material for engaging the articles to eject them from the material.
14.
