lily invention relates to dump cars of the tilting bed type wherein the bed is provided with side gates adapted to be swung open automatically at the low side of the bed when the latter is tilted for a dumping operation.
The invention. has for its general object to provide improved operating mechanism for these gates which will hold the gams tightly closed when the bed is in its normal or horizontal position, and which during a dumping operation to either side, will result in the movement of the gate at the dumping side to a downwardly in- -clined position, approximately in continuation of ,the floor of the car bed, while holding'the 5 gate at the opposite or high side in a closed or substantially closed position.
A further object of the invention is to pro-- vide gate operating mechanism which, in a dumping operation, will permit the operating linkage to complete its gate opening movement even though the gate cannot move to a com.- pletely open position. This takes care of such contingencies as the edge of the dumping gate striking a previously dumped pile of earth or any other projection which would'obstruct the complete opening of the gate, and serves to prevent any breakage of the gate operating mechanism or dislocation of the bed at such time.

. The car bed '7, and the under body or frame 8 that supports it, may be of any desired construction, and the bed may be mounted on the under body to swing laterally either about fixed pivots or upon rocking supports, but in the accompanying drawings I have chosen to illustrate my improvements applied to a car having the latter construction. The operation of dumping the car bed may be performed manually I or through power derived from air or steam cylinders having operative connection to raise either side of the bed. This practice of employing power cylinders for tilting the bed is well Will, llii5 2313) known, and. inasmuch assuch apparatus forms no part of the present invention I have not shown the same.
The under body 8 comprises two longitudinally extending beams 9 which form the center sill of such under body structure. This center sill is mounted on trucks (not shown) in the usual way, which trucks have the usual bearings for engaging over the ends of the axles ii on which the wheels 12 are mounted. At two or more points spaced along the length of the car, heavy frame members l3l3 extend laterally from the beams 9 to form supports on which the tilting bed 7 rests. The upper edges of said frame .members are formed with seating recesses or notches 14 adjacent to the outer ends thereof, such seating recesses receiving heavy bearing pins 15 which are carried by brackets 16 secured to'the under side of the bed 7. .These bearing pins and recesses form two laterally disposed F rocking fulcra, around which the bed has tilting movement to either side, as illustrated in Figure 2. The supporting members 13 may be arranged in pairs to engage with the oppositely projecting ends of the bearing pin 15 on each side of the bracket 16, or the brackets 16 may be arranged in pairs to support the opposite ends of each pin 15, and a. single frame member 13 may be arranged to engage with thepin between such brackets. A reinforcing bar or strut 17 extends across the upper edges of the sill beams 9 and ties the upper edges of the supporting frame members 13 together.
The car bed 7 comprises any suitable construction of floor 18 mounted on longitudinally extending sill rails 19. Transversely extending bars 21 reinforce the frame of the bed at the ends and intermediate points thereof. The rocker brackets 16 areriveted to these transversely extending bars 21. At opposite sides of the bed are mounted two side gates or side doors 2222, pivoted adjacent to their lower margins on pivot pins 23 carried by the side margins of the bed, so that such gates may swing outward and downward, as illustrated in Figure 2. The side gates are preferably made up of spaced plates 24 and 25 connected at their upper converging edges by a channel bar 26, and reinforced at their lower edges by a channel bar 2'7. Secured to the lower edge of ,each door at spaced points along its length are pivot brackets 28 which have suitable bearing support on the pivot pins 23. Such pivot pins are carried by brackets 29 which project laterally from the sill beams 19 of the car bed, below the floor in their opening movement, such lips or flanges forming continuations of the floor for preventing any part of the load fromfalling in upon being broken by the inability of either the pivot pins 23 or operating linkage at the dumping side of the bed when the gate is moved to open position, such function of these lips or flanges being clearly illustrated in Figure 2. The
. brackets 28 which pivotally support each gate on the pivot pins 23 may extend down through slots cut in such lips or flanges 31.
The gate operating mechanisms are duplicates for both gates, and each comprises a bent link 32 which is arranged to control the position of its respective gate 22-22'. Such gate controlling links may have direct pivotal connection at their outer ends to the lower ends of the gate brackets 28 for providing a positive connection between each link and its gate, but I prefer to provide a lost motion connection at this point between each gate and its operating linkage whereby the linkage can complete its gate operating motion without compelling movement of the gate to its fully open position. To this end, the outer ends of the links 32 are pivotally connected to short supporting links 33, which are in turn pivotally connected at their inner ends on the hinge pins 23 of the gates. The pivot bracket 28 of each gate has a downward projection or foot 34'which bears on the inclined upper surface of the supporting link 33 so that the supporting link is operative to close the gate positively but is not operative to open the gate positively, the gate merely resting with its tilting weight on the link. In pivotally connecting the secondary links 33 to the bent links, as indicated at 35, the outer end of the latter links are preferably provided with upwardly turned apertured lugs 36 (Figure 4) for fitting in the bifurcated outer ends of the links 33. end of each secondary link 33 also has a square cut end or shoulder 37 which is adapted, in the opening movement of its associated gate, to strike the outer side of the adjacent frame rail 19 for limiting the downward pivotal movement of the gate to a predetermined angle, as illustrated at the lower side of the bed in Figure 2. It will be noted from the foregoing construction that the tilting weightof the gate merely rests on the inclined link 33, whereby said gate will open under the action of gravity as said link is swung inwardly toward the bed. This leaves the two links 32 and 33 free to complete their gate opening movement independently of the movement of the gate itself. That is to say, if the outer edge of the gate should strike a pile of previously dumped earth or some other projection which would prevent it from moving to its completely opened position, represented, for example, by the dotted line position of the gate in Figure 2, the linkage would nevertheless be free to complete its operating movement, whereby there is avoided the possibility of the linkage gate to move to its open position.
The inner ends of the links 32 project upwardly at an angle under the frame of the bed, whereby to clear the lower edges of the sill bars 19 and to dispose their inner pivotal connections 38 substantially at the points illustrated. The links or pivoted members 32 by their position relative to the bed, control the positions of their respective gates through the links 33. For con- The outer The lateral edges of the floor 18 trolling the positions of such links relative to the bed I have provided relatively long arms or links 39, which are connected at their outer ends to the pivots 38 and which extend transversely across the under frame 8. Such long links also cooperate with curved guide surfaces on the bed, as I shall presently describe. The opposite or inner end of each long link is pivotally connected to the under body on a pivot pin 41, which is located on the opposite side of the under body from the gate which is controlled by such link. It will be noted that the pivot pins 41 are carried by the transverse frame members 13 of the under body and are disposed inwardly and upwardly from the adjacent bearing pin socket 14. The ends of the links 39 are provided with short inclined slots 42 for engaging over the pivot pins 41. Each link in crossing from one side to the other of the under body is normally supported in approximately the position shown by resting on a suitable support carried by the under body. In the construction shown, the supports for both links consist of the ends of the crossbar 17, the latter forming shoulders or supporting surfaces 43 at each side of the center sills, with which the under sides of the links engage.
The three links 33, 32 and 39 occupy the relation of outer, intermediate and inner links respectively, in the mechanism extending between each gate and the under frame.
Referring to Figure 4, the pivotal connection between each intermediate or gate controlling link 32 and its inner link 39 is preferably effected by forking the inner end of the link 32, as indicated at 44, and having the forked arms engage over the outer sides of the pivot eye 45 on the link 39, for receiving the pivot pin 38. Projecting beyond the eye 45 from the under side of each link 39 is a lug or shoulder 46 which is adapted to cooperate with a stop shoulder 4'7 formed between the pivot arms 44 of the link 32. When the bed is tilted to dumping position these two stop shoulders coact to limit the outward pivotal movement between the links 32 and 39 on the rising side of the bed, as 'will hereinafter appear. Mounted on the outer ends of each pivot pin 38, and on the outer sides of the pivot arms 44 are rollers 48 which are adapted to engage guide surfaces 49 carried bythe bed. Each of said guide surfaces is formed on the under side of a bracket 51, which is secured to the sill rails 19 of the bed frame, and each guide surwhen the bed is in its normal horizontal position."
any pressure of the load acting outwardly on the gates will be incapable of opening the same because of the inability of either link 32 to move inwardly. That is to say, any pressure tending to open the gate is transmitted to the pivot 38 which is held against movement in all directions, and thus the gate is prevented from opening. It will be apparent that the pivot 38 cannot swing upwardly around the axis of the pivot pin 41 because of the engagement of the rollers 48 with the curved track 49. Similarly the pivot 38 cannot swing downwardly because of the engagement of the link 39 with its supporting shoulder 43.
When the bed is tilted to dump to either side the link 39 which is connected to the gate on the dumping side remains in the same position that lid m be invvnar it occupied when the gate was horizontal, holding the pivot 38 in a substantially stationary position through the confining action of the curved guide 49 which prevents the link 39 from swinging upwardly. centrically disposed upwardly and outwardly from the tilting axis of the bed, it will naturally follow that as this side of the bed swings downwardly the link 32 will pull the short inclined link 33 inwardly, towards the side of the bed, thus permitting the'gate at this side to swing downwardly under the action of gravity. As before remarked, if the gate should strike some obstruction which would prevent the complete opening thereof, the links 32 and33 will nevertheless be free to complete their swinging move ment so that no damage can occur to the parts. In other words, while the linkage normally holds the door closed, and functions to positively close it during the righting operation, it permits but does not compel it to open in dumping, leaving it free to swing upward in this operation if it should strike some obstacle, meanwhile limiting or controlling its downward movement.
It should also be noted that this lost motion is eifective throughout the entire range of tilting movement of the bed and. the entire range of the gate controlling movement of the link mech anism 33, 32, 39. Hence, if the side gate at the dumping side should become frozen to the bed, as by an accumulation of ice on the gate or on the load, the bed can nevertheless move through its entire range of dumping movement even though the side gate at the dumping side remains fast to the bed.
On the rising side of the bed the pivot- 38 and rollers 39 will drop downwardly and outwardly away from the curved guide surface 49, approiiimately to the position shown in Figure 2. 0wing to the engagement of the shoulder id of the link 39, against the cooperating stop shoulder- 47 of the link 32, such links and connecting pivot 38 cannot swing downwardly and outwardly beyond this position, in which position these links function as a toggle, and hence the rollers 43 will remain in position to be returned to the curved track 49 when the bed is righted. The movement of the links into such position increases the overall length of the two links and this, together with the additional endwise movement permitted by the slot 42, allows the links to follow the upward swing of the bed even though the lower pivot llof the links is located eccentrically with respect to the tilting axis 15. It will thus be seen that the links on the rising side of the bed leave the pivot 38 in approximately the same position, with respect to the bed, that it occupied when the bed was horizontal, and hence the gate on this rising side is not permitted to swing open as the tilting operation begins. When the bed starts its return movement -to normal position, the link 39 on the elevated side of the bed engages its shoulder ,43
and swings the rollers 48 back up against the guide track 49, thereby restoring the parts to their normal position.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon for rocking movement about laterally spaced fulcrums, a side gate connected with the bed to open downwardly, and operating mechanism for controlling the open ing of the gate in dumping comprising a pivoted member which, by its position relative to said Inasmuch as the pivot 38 is ecbed, limits the downward movement of the gate while permitting upward movement thereof, and means connected with said pivoted member and permanently connected to'said underv frame for controlling the position of said pivoted member relative to said bed.
2. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon for rocking movement about laterally spaced fulcrums, a side gate connected with the bed to open downwardly, and operating mechanism for controlling the opening of the gate in dumping comprising a pivoted member which, by its position relative to said bed, limits the downward movement of the gate while permitting upward movement thereof, and an arm-pivotally connected to said under frame and arranged to control the position of said pivoted member relative to said bed.
3. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon to rock about a fulcrum at one side of the under frame, a side gate connected with. the bed to open downwardly, and means for controlling the opening of the gate dumping comprising a pivoted member which, by its position relative to said bed, limits the downward movement of said gate while permitting upward movement thereof, and a link connected between said pivoted member and the opposite side of said under frame for controlling the position of said pivoted member relative to said bed.

A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon for rocking movement in either direction on two laterally spaced fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to open downwardly, and means for controlling the opening of each gate in dumping comprising a pivoted member which, by its position relative to said bed, limits the downward movement of the corresponding gate while permitting upward movement thereof, and,
a link connected at one end to said pivoted memher and connected at the other end with said under frame adjacent to one of said fulcrums.
5. A dump car comprising an under frame structure, a bed structure pivotally mounted thereon, a side gate connected with the bed structure to open downwardly, ink mechanism operatively connecting said gate with said under frame structure and operative to control the opening of said gate, and a guide surface on said bed structure controlling the position of said link mechanism.
6. A dump car comprising-an under frame structure, a bed structure tiltedly mounted thereon, a side gate connected with the bed structure to open downwardly, means for controlling the opening of said gate comprising a system of linkage operatively connecting said gate with said under frame structure, and a guide surface on one of said structures curved concentrically with the tilting axis of said bed structure for controlling the movement of said linkage.
7. A dump car comprising an under frame structure, a bed structure tiltably mounted thereon, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed structure toiopen downwardly, means for controlling the opening of each gate comprising a system of linkage operatively connecting said'gate with said under frame structure, a roller carried by said linkage, and a track carried by one of said structures and curved substantially concentrically with the tilting axis of said bed structure, said roller engaging with said track for controlling said linkage.
8. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, a gate controlling mechanism 'comprising links, operative connections between said links and each of said gates, and secondary links connecting each of said first named links with the opposite side of the under frame, said operative connections arranged to permit said mechanism to complete its operative movement, independently of the opening of the gate.
9. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrui-is, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising gate controlling links operatively connected with each gate to limit the downward movement of the gate in dumping while permitting upward movement thereof, and secondary links pivotally connected with the inner ends of said gate controlling links and extending transversely across said under frame for pivotal connection therewith adjacent to the opposite sides of said under frame.
10. \A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising gate controlling links operatively connected with each gate to limit the downward movement of the gate in dumping while permitting upward movement thereof, laterally spaced pivot means on said under frame located,
adjacent to said rocking fulcrums, and secondary links connected directly between the inner ends of said gate controlling links and the pivot means on the opposite side of said under frame. 11. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising outer links operatively connected with each of said gates, laterally spaced pivots on said under frame, inner links mounted on said pivots andextending transversely across said under frame, in opposite directions, the outer ends of said inner links being pivotally connected to said outer links, and means permitting limiting shifting movementbetween each V a tilting b'ed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly "into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising outer links operatively connected with each of said gates, two stationary pivots on said'under frame spaced laterally from the center thereof, and inner links connected directly between said outer links and the stationary pivots on the opposite sides of said under frame, said inner links having slots engaging with said stationary pivots for permitting limited shifting movement of said links relative to said pivots.
13. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted forlateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising laterally spaced stationary pivots on said under frame, links pivotally connected to said stationary pivots and extending transversely across said under frame towards the opposite sides thereof, supporting means on said under frame on which said links normally rest, and means operatively connecting the outer ends of said links with said gates including links movable into engagement with the bed by the opening of the door, and links connecting the latter links with said first mentioned links.
14. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed beingadapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums, side gates connected with the opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising outer links operatively connected with each of said gates, intermediate links connected with the outer links, inner links pivotally connected at their outer ends to said intermediate links and having their inner ends extending to the opposite sides of said under frame, means pivotally connecting the latter ends of said inner links to said under frame, and supporting means on said under frame on which the intermediate portions of said inner links rest.
15. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame on two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, said bed being adapted for lateral dumping movement in either direction upon one or the other of said rocking fulcrums,
side gates connected with the opposite sides of rections, pivots connecting the outer ends of saidinner links with said outer links, means on said under frame for limiting the downward swinging movement of said inner links, rollers on said pivots, and guide surfaces on said bed curved substantially concentrically with said rocking fulcrums, and adapted to be engaged by said l,977,ollil rollers for preventing upward movement of said inner link on the dumping side of the bed in a dumping operation.
16. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon, a side gate connected with the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising an outer link operatively connected with said gate, an. inner link pivotally con- -nected at one end to said outer link and pivotally connected at its other end to said under frame, and stop means for limiting the rela tive pivotal movement between said links in one direction.

21. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame and adapted to rock to dumping position about rocking fulcruins spaced laterally from the cen= ter of said under frame, gates connected with opposite sides oi the bed to swing down wardly into open pos" ion, and operating mechanism comprisin outer links operatively connected with each of said gates, inner links pivotally connected at their outer ends with said outer links and pivotally connected at their inner ends with the under frame, and cooperating stop shoulders carried by said outer and inner links for limiting the movement between said links in one direction.
22. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted on said under frame and adapted to rock to dumping position about two rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from the center of said under frame, side gates connected with opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism comprising outer links having a lost motion connection with each of said gates, inner links pivotally connected at their inner ends with the under frame and pivotally connected at their outer ends with said outer links, and stop means for limiting the relative pivotal movement between said links in one direction.

A dump car comprising an under frame, a bed mounted thereon, laterally spaced fulqrum supports fixedly secured to said under frame, laterally spaced fulcrums fixedly secured to said bed, said fulcrums adapted to engage said fulcrum supports to hold said bed in substantially stable equilibrium, said bed tilting to dumping position to either side of the car, about fulcrum axes defined bysaid fulcs and fulcrum supports, a side gate connected with the bed to swing downwardly into open'position, and gate operating mechanism comprising an outer link operatively connected with said gate, an inner link pivotally connected at one end to said outer link, means establishing pivotal connection between the other end of said inner link and the under frame, and a guide track on said bed for limiting the relative pivotal movement between said links in one direction.

A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon, laterally spaced fulcrum supports fixedly secured to said under frame, laterally spaced fulcrums fixedly secured to said bed, said fulcrums adapted to engage said fulcrum supports to hold said bed in substantially stable equilibrium, said bed tilting to dumping position to either side of the car about stationary fulcrum axes defined by said fulcrums and fulcrum supports, side gates connected with opposite sides of the bed to swing downwardly into open position, and gate operating mechanism for each gate comprising an outer link operatively connected with its associated gate, an inner link pivotally connected at one end relative pivotal L its Zlllli liZll to said outer link, means pivotally supporting said fulcrum supports and fulcrums being operative to hold said bed in substantially stable equilibrium, side gates for said bed mounted to swing outward and downward from their closed position, toggles adapted to hold said gates closed, said toggles comprising links pivotally connected with said under frame, and means operating to break said toggles to permit the gate at the dumping side to open upon the tilting of the bed to discharge its load at either side of the car. i 26. A dump car comprising a bed adapted t tilt laterally in either direction from its normal position, an under .body on which said bed is supported, side gates for said bed mounted to swing'outward and downward from their closed position, toggles adapted to hold said gates closed, and guide tracks onsaid bed, said toggles and guide tracks having relatively movable engagement for controlling the opening and closing movement of the side gate at the dumping side of the bed.
27. In a dump vehicle, the combination of an under frame, laterally spaced fulcrum supports on said under frame, a car bed, laterally spaced fulcrums on said bed operative to engage said fulcrum supports to hold the bed in substantially stable equilibrium, said bed tilting to dumping position to either side of the' car about said fulcrums, doors at each side of said body supported thereby to swing outward and downward from their closed position, toggles adapted to hold said doors closed, said toggles having permanent pivotal attachments to said under frame, and means effective to release said toggles to permit the door .at the dumping side to open upon the tilting of the body to discharge its loan at either side of the vehicle.
28. A dump car comprising an underframe, a bed adapted to tilt about laterally spaced fulcrums relative to said under frame, a side gate for said bed mounted to swing outward and ally connected to said under frame, and a guide surface on said bed controlling the position of said toggle.
29. A dump car comprising an under frame, a tilting bed mounted thereon, laterally spaced fulcrum supports fixedly secured to said under frame, fulcrums mounted in laterally fixed relation on said bed, said fulcrums adapted to engage said fulcrum supports to hold said bed in substantially stable equilibrium, said bed tilting to dumping position at either side of the car about laterally spaced stationary axes defined by said fulcrums and fulcrum supports, side gates pivotally connected adjacent to their lower edges with said bed to swing downwardly into open position, and a gate controlling mechanism for each gate comprising a transverse member, link means pivotally connected with the outer end of each transverse member and operatively associated with the respective gate, said outer end of the transverse member being supported solely by said link means on the rising side of the car in the dumping operation, and means establishing a permanent pivotal connection between the other end of said transverse member and the opposite side of said under frame.

A dump car comprising an'under frame, a tilting bed adapted to rock to dumping position to either side of the car about rocking fulcrums spaced laterally from'the center of said under frame, side gates pivotally connected adjacent to their lower edges with saidbed to swing downwardly into open position, and gravity held locking means for each gate comprising outer link means operatively associated with the respective gate, and inner link means pivotally connected with said outer link means and with the under frame.

A dump car comprising an underframe, laterally spaced fulcrums disposed adjacent to the outer sides of said underframe, a tilting bed supported in substantiallystable equilibrium on said underframe and operative to dump to either side about said laterally spaced fulcrums, side gates at opposite sides of the bed hingedly connected with the bed to swing outwardly and downwardly from the side of the bed to open position in the dumping operation, and gate control mechanism for each gate operative at the dumping side to allow the gate to be opened by gravity or to permit the gate to be stopped by an obstruction during continued dumping movement of the bed and serving to positively close the gate during 'the righting movement, and operative at the rising side to positively hold the' gate closed, each of said gate control mechanisms comprising an arm extending downwardly from each gate below the hinge axis of the gate, a pivoted member pivotally mounted on the bed. and coacting with said arm for controlling the position of the associated gate, and transversely extending means reaching to and permanently connected with the opposite side of said underframe and coacting with said piv,ot

A dump car comprising an underframe, laterally spaced fulcrum supports stationarily disposed on said underframe adjacent to the outer sidesthereof, a tilting bed supported in substantially stable equilibrium on said underframe and comprising laterally spaced fulcrums stationarily mounted on said bed and adapted to cooperate with said laterally spaced fulcrum supports, said bed being operative to dump to either side about said laterally spaced fulcrums, side gates at opposite sides of the bed hingedly connected with the bed to swing outwardly and downwardly from the side of the bed to open position in the dumping operation, and gate control mechanism for each'gate operative at the dumping side to allow the gate to be opened by gravity or to permit the gate to be stopped by an obstruction during continued dumping movement of the bed and serving to positively close the gate during the righting movement,

A dump vehicle comprising an underirame a body tiltable about iulcrumsat opposite sidesof the underframe, a down-folding door at each side of said body pivotally supported thereby, and door controlling means for each door compris ing an arm mounted for concentric swinging movement with said door, link devices operatively connected with said am and extending across the underframe and connected thereto at the opposite sides of said underframe, said linkdevices being free of attachment to the body intermediate their points of connection with said arm and said underframe, each of said door controlling means ccmprising a lost motion connection permitting the door on the dumping side to move or tobe stopped during the dumping of the body.

A dump vehicle comprising a frame, a body tiltable about fulcrums at opposite sides of the underframe, a down-folding door at each side of said body pivotally supported thereby, and a door controlling mechanism for each door comprising an arm mounted for concentric swinging movement with said door, link means operatively connected with said arm and extending across the underframe and-connected thereto adjacent to the opposite side fulcrum line for said body, said link means being free of attachment to the body intermediate their points of connection with said arm and said underframe and each of said door controlling mechanisms during transit positively holding said: doors closed and during dumping opening and closing the door at the side of dumping and maintaining the door at the opposite side closed.

A dump vehicle comprising a frame, a body tiltable about fulcrums at opposite sides of the underirame, a down-folding door at each side of said body pivotally supported thereby, and a door controlling mechanism for each door comprising an arm mounted for concentric swinging movement with said door, link means operatively connected with said arm. and extending across the underframe and connected thereto at the side oi the underi'rarne opposite to the side of the door controlled thereby, said link means being free of attachment to said body intermediate their points of connection. with said arm and said underirame, said door controlling mechanisms during transit positively holding said doors closed and during dumpin permitting opening and effectingclosing of the door at the side of dumping and maintaining the door at the op-- posits side closed and each of said door controlling mechanisms comprising a lost motion connection permitting the door on the dumping side to move downwardly or to be stopped during the dumping of the bod 37.
