Patented Sept. 4, 1934 UNITED STATES ROLLER BIT Guy E. Behnke, Houston, Tex., assignor to Reed Roller Bit Company, Houston, Tex., a corporation of Texas Application December 1, 1932, Serial No. 645,143
3 Claims. (Cl. 255-71) This invention relates generally to deep well drilling apparatus and specifically to roller bits.
It has for its object the provision of new and improved bearings for roller cutters and will be found particularly useful in that conventional type of roller bit including a head having a substantially V-shaped cutter recess in the bottom thereof and substantially conical cutters in said recess.
In the accompanying drawings one preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2, Fig. 1 being a fragmentary sectional elevation of the bit, and Fig. 2 a fragmentary elevation taken at a right angle to Fig. 1; another embodiment of the invention by Figs. 3 and 4, Fig. 3 being a fragmentary sectional elevation of the bit and Fig. 4 a sectional elevation thereof taken at a right angle to Fig. 3; and another embodiment by Figs. 5 and 6, Fig. 5 being a fragmentary sectional elevation of the bit and Fig. 6 a sectional elevation thereof taken at a right angle to Fig. 3.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2, the bit head is indicated at 1. It has in its lower end a substantially V-shaped recess 2, for the reception of the substantially conical roller cutters 3. Each of these cutters is mounted in the head by means which will now be described.
In the wall of the recess is a downwardly opening slot 4 for the reception of a cutter support 5, which may be removably welded therein. The support 5 has an opening 6 to receive the cutter pin 7, which may be removably welded therein, and an annular flange 8 projecting downwardly and inwardly into the recess 2 and surrounding the pin '7. The pin 7 has an annular flange 9 and disposed between the support flange 8 and pin flange 9 is a removable ring 10. The cutter 3 has a roller raceway 11 and a ball raceway 12; rollers 13 are disposed between the annular flange 8 of the support and the raceway 11 of the cutter and balls 14 are disposed between the raceway formed by the pin flange 9 and ring 10 and the raceway 12 of the cutter. The cutter 3 is rotatably locked on the pin '7 by the ring 10 engaging the balls 4.
The bit shown by Figs. 3 and 4 is quite similar to the bit shown by Figs. 1 and 2. It has a downwardly opening slot 15 in the wall of its cutte recess. Removably welded in the slot is a support 16, and removably welded in the support 16 is a pin 17. The support 16 has an annular flange 18 extending downwardly and inwardly into the cutter recess 19 and surrounding the pin 1'7. The pin 17 has an annular flange 19 bearing against the annular flange 18 of the support and forming with the flange 18 a raceway for balls 20. The cutter 21 has a ball raceway 22 for the balls 20 and a roller raceway 23 for the rollers 24.
Referring now to Figs. 5 and 6, illustrating a bit similar to that above described, the support 30 has an inwardly and downwardly projecting flange 31. The pin 32 has thereon a removable ring 33 disposed between the flange 31 of the support and the flange 34 of the pin. The support flange 31 and the ring 33 form a raceway for balls 35 in raceway 36 of the cutter. The ring 33 and the flange 34 form a raceway for the balls 37 in the raceway 38 of the cutter. The flange 34 forms a raceway for the balls 39 in the raceway 40 of the cutter.
The advantages of the bearing constructions above described will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. A roller bit having a head, said head having a cutter recess, a support removably secured to said head, a pin removably secured to said support, said support having an annular flange surrounding said pin, and projecting downwardly and inwardly into said recess, said pin having a raceway formed by an annular flange theron and a ring between said pin flange and said support flange, a cup-shaped cutter enclosing said pin and flange, said cutter having a roller raceway and a ball raceway, rollers between said support flange and the roller raceway of said cutter, and balls between the raceway of said pin and the ball raceway of said cutter, said ring being removable from said pin and serving when on said pin and between said flanges to hold said balls to rotatably lock said cutter on said pin.
2. A roller bit having a support, a pin removably secured to said support, said support having an annular flange surrounding said pin, said pin having a raceway formed by an annular flange thereon and a ring between said pin flange and said support flange, a cup-shaped cutter enclosing said pin and flange, said cutter having a roller raceway and a ball raceway, rollers between said support flange and the roller raceway of said cutter and balls between the raceway of said pin and the ball raceway of said cutter, said ring being removable from said pin and serving when on said pin and between said flanges to hold said balls to rotatably lock said cutter on said pin.
3. A roller bit having a support, a pin removably secured to said support. said support having an annular flange surrounding saidpin, said pin having a raceway, a ring on said pin and forming a part of said raceway, a cup-shaped cutter enclosing said pin and flange, said cutter having a roller raceway and a ball raceway, rollers between said support flange and the roller raceway of said cutter and balls between the raceway of said pin. and the ball raceway of said cutter. said ring; being removable from said 'pin and serving whez; on said pin to hold said balls to rotatably lock said cutter on aid pin.
