chine to make type carriers or shuttles,' such as illustrated in my application No. 523,919 filed vMarch 19, 1931, for typewriting machines of the kind known as the Varityper.
to those disclosed in my application No. 523,920 filed March 19, 1931, in which one or more shuttle blanks are placed in a die secured to a chuck Where the blanks are then operated upon by suitable rolling means to flow the metal of the shuttle blanks into type intaglios on the die, to thus form raised types on the shuttles. Said roller means is hand operated and is also hand adjusted to increase its pressure on the shuttles as the rolling operation proceeds.
An object of the present invention is to provide an automatic machine whereby the production of the shuttles is expedited. To this end there is provided a motor which is connected, through suitable mechanism, to oscillate the roller means. 7
Provision is made to automatically increase the pressure of the roller mechanism as the rolling operation proceeds. I
Means are also provided to automatically render the pressure increasing means ineffective when the shuttles have been rolled to a predetermined thickness.
ther features and advantages will hereinafter appear. 1

, to by screws 20. The invention also includes features similar This invention relates to an automatic ma- The machine includes a frame 15, having a base 16 from which extend standards 17 to support-a top plate or table 18. A chuck 19 is" mountedupon the top plate 18 and secured there Said chuck includes four jaws. 21 (Figs. 1, 5 and 6) each secured to a rack 22; the racks being guided in slots 23 of said chuck.
The racks 22 engage with a spiral fie-formed on the face of a bevel gear 25 so that the'jaws may be moved inwardly, by rotating the gear '25, to grip a die 26, or they may be moved outwardly thereby 'to release the die. ,7
The jaw operating gear 25 may be rotated by one or more gears 27, each being provided with a polygonal shaped aperture 28 to receive a key 29. by which the gear 27 may be rotated.
The die 26 may be like that described in my application No. 523,920'ab0ve referred to and comprises four sections 30, 31, 32 and 33 which sections when assembled as in Fig. 6 form arcirc'ular aperture 34 into which the shuttles 35, in blank form, are placed to. be operated upon by rollers 36 of the-roller means 3'7, hereinafter described, to flow the metal of the shuttles into types 38, in intaglio on the concaved surfaces of the die sections, to thus form the types 39. on the shuttles. Each die section has tongues40 and 41 extending crosswiseof each other and into corresponding grooves 42 and 43 in the end of the adjacent die sections to thus interlock the die sections to prevent relative shifting during the shuttle rolling operation.
The roller means 37 includes two roller carriers). 44 (Figs. 1 and 6) having slots or grooves 45 in which the rollers 36 are supported by shafts 46. The roller carriers 4% are slidable in a transverse,
inverted T-slot 4?,(see Fig. '7 also) of a holder or 7 head 48 on the upper end of a vertical spindle or hollow shaft 49 which is supported for oscillation in a bearing 50 in the top plate 18, and a bearing 51 of a bracket 52 secured to the base plate 16; the oscillatingmeans for the shaft 49 .are subsequently spread apart by a wedge .or cam '55 pivotally supported on a reduced portion 56 of) an actuator shaft 57 extending through the sleeve .10; r
49; the shaft 57 being moved up and down. in said sleeve, in a manner hereinafter described, to
adjust the wedge 55. rectangular (Fig. 6) and has sloping; sides 58 engaging correspondingly sloping faces 59 in the bottom of slots 60 formed in the ends of the roller The wedge 55 in plan, is
the machine frame.
cured to ashaft 62 to rotate the latter; the shaft 62 being supported in a web 63 of the machine frame and a bearing 64 of the bracket 52. The shaft 57 has secured thereto a bevel gear 65 which meshes with and rotates a gear 66,.the latter comprising a nut 66 operating on a thread 6'? of the shaft 57 to raise the shaft 57 and thus carry the wedge 55 therewith tospread the roller carriers 44 until the rollers 36 engage the back of the shuttle. It will be understood that if the gear 66 is rotated in the opposite direction the shaft 5'7 and the wedge 55 are lowered so that the roller means may be contracted. The shaft 57 is held against rotation, when acted upon by the nut66 by the reduced end 68 of ascrew 68 said. screw end extending into 21.8101, 68 in the lower. end 69' of the shaft 57 which engages in a hole 69* of a boss 69. formed. on the base 16 of the. gear 66 is confined between the bearing 51,
and the boss 69 'to insure the up and down movementof the shaft 5'7.
To prevent dislodgement' of the roller carriers 44 from the topof slot 47 by the action of the wedge, two guide plates '70are secured'to the head or support 48 by screws 70 and each carrier is provided at its lower end with flanges 70 engaging in lateral extensions of the slot 47. The plates 70 and the flanges '70 also assist to guide the roller carriers accurately while moving outwardly therein. Upward movement of the sleeve an electric circuit comprising conductors 72 and '72 extending from a source of power to a motor '73. The motor shaft '74 is supported in a bracket 75 and has securedlthereto a worm 76 which drives a worm. wheel Wsecured to a shaft '78 supported in a bracket 79. secured to the shaft has connected thereto one end of a link 81 by means of a headed stud 80*, the other end of the link 81 being connected to an arm 82 secured to the sleeve 49 so that as the disk continues to rotate the sleeve 49 andithe roller means carried thereby are oscillated to carry the rollers back and forth over the shuttles. As the rolling operation continues the shuttles becomethinner and from time to time it is necessary to spread the roller means.
slightly to press the roller against the shuttles, This may be effected manually by means of the hand wheel 61 or it may be effected automatically in a manner now to be described.
The automatic means for increasing the pressure of'the rollers 36 against the shuttles from time to time may includea ratchet wheel 83 (Figs. 1 and 4) secured to the shaft 62; said ratchet being operable by a pawl 84 pivoted by a stud 85 on an arm 86iloosely supported on the shaft,
62 so that it may be oscillated back and forth on saidshaft 62,by means hereinafter described, to feed. the ratchet 83 and the connected shaft A disk 80 62 and thus feed the shaft 57 upwardly through the medium of the gears 65 and 66 to spread the roller carriers by the wedge 55.
To oscillate the pawl carrying arm 86 there is connected to it, through the stud 85, a link 87 which link is connected to a crank 88 by a stud'89. The crank 88 is secured to a shaft 90 rotatably supported in the web 63 and in a bearing 91 of the bracket 75. The shaft 91 is provided with a bevel gear 92 meshing with a bevel gear 93 secured to the worm wheel 77 so that as the worm wheel 93 is rotated the shaft 96 is ro- 'tated' thereby through the medium of the bevel .pawl 84, by means of, a finger piece 95, out of.
engagement with the ratchet wheel 83' and against 'a stop 96 011 the link 87. It will be understood that The means to automatically render. ineffective thepressure increasing means, when the shuttles have been 'rolled" to the proper thickness, may. include a lever or feeler 100 pivoted by a stud 101 on a bracket 102 secured to the top plate 18. Said lever is' provided with a nose 103v extending. through a slot 104 in the sleeve 49 and bearing. against the cylindrical surface of the shaft 57} as indicated in dot and dash lines in.Fig..1,. While the pressureincreasing meansis function-. ing; the nose being. pressed against said shaft by a spring 105.
A notch 106 inthe shaft 51 is. normally/below the nose. 103 and said shaft 53 moves upwardly until. the notch reaches said nose whenthe lat-- ter is suddenly snapped into the notch 106 by. 1151..
the spring 105, thus swingingan arm 108 of the lever 100 into the path of the finger piecev 95 of. the pawl 84. Upon a subsequent operation of the pawl 84 the latter, due to engagement. of the finger piece 95 with the end 109 of the obstructing arm 1 08, is swung about itspivot 85, out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 83, thuspermitting the pawl carrying arm 86 to be operated idly by the crank 88 of the shaft 90. Thus the upward feedof the shaft 57, and a consequent 12 5- outward feed of the rollers 36 is automatically stopped; the oscillating movement of the roller means may continue however until the machine is stopped by the attendant by opening theswitch 72. I
The arm 108 is provided with a lip 109 which prevents it from moving in behind the finger .piece 95 in case the notchmoves to the nose 103 while the pawl 84 is in actuated position.
Upon the return of the pawl 84, however, the 135- finger piece 95 moves clear of the lip 109 and the nose 103 then snaps into the notch 104, thus swinging the arm 108 into the path of the finger piece 95.
After the machine is stopped the lever 100 may 14f between the roller carriers 44. The roller supports 44 may then be moved towards each other 7 to remove the roller from the shuttles to permit removalof the die, with the finished shuttles from t e c uck; 150
