Application June 23, 1930, Serial No. 463,009 10 Claims. (Cl. 179-10011) This invention relates to sound producing sets or systems and while it has for a general object the provision of an improved and novel radio and phonograph unit or assembly, the invention has '5 more particular reference to a novel control for such units or assemblies.
- A prime object of the present invention is the provision in a, combined radio receiving set and phonograph of anautomatic switch operable to '10 stop the phonograph after the playing of the record and to start the radio.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a novel controloperating device for phonographs and radio receiving sets operable 15 to switch from a radio program to the reproducer of a phonograph and to automatically start the radio set again after a predetermined period of time.
Another important object of the invention is the provision of'a selective switch for the amplifiers of a phonograph and radio receiving set which will be automatically operated by the op eration of the phonograph controls.
A further important object of the-present invention is the provision of a switch operating device actuated by the controls of a phonograph and controlling a selective switch of a'radiophonograph unit. 7
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description.

Briefly, thisinvention contemplates the provision of a novel and. conveniently operable control device for radio receiving sets and phonographs which is particularly applicable to radiophonograph units or assemblies for controlling or turning the" phonographs and radio sets of such units or assemblies ofi and on. Usually the controls of such assemblies are independently operable and require an operator to turn the radio off and the phonograph on and' after playing the phonograph to reverse thisprocedure. By the practice of this invention an operator may turn the radio off and the phonograph on upon starting the turntable of the phonograph, and after the phonograph has played a record the tone arm will actuate a control device which stops the turntable and operates a selective switch that turns the phonograph off and re-connects the radio. 4 r V a Illustrative of an at present preferredembodi-ai ment of the invention the drawing diagram matically shows a radio-phonograph unit or as-j" sembly comprising a phonograph 11 and a radio,

In radio-phonograph units. or 'assemblie's, the signals or-impulses caused by the needle following the grooves-in the record are amplified andreproduced by the audio frequency .amplifier and speaker of the radio set or system. In order'to selectively control such units or assemblies, a. switch 22, as shown in Figure 1, is provided for connecting the radio frequency and. audiofrequency amplifiersof the radio set 12 fortheamg plification of radio signals received by the set and for switching from this connection to the connec.. tion of only the audio frequency amplifier for amplifying the impulses or signals caused by-the needle 21 following the grooves of the record. ,It is usually important that thisswitch 22 be mounted near the amplifier on the chassis or frame '23 P TENro-FF-lca D IQ of theradio system or setfor; the reason, among v others, that it permits the use of. short leads or conductors from the switch to the amplifier avoid-.5 ing excessive capacity effects between the adjacent leads from the switch 22 and between these leads and adjacent wires or apparatusin the radio receiving set. e
An object of the present invention, as already mentioned; is to provide a switch operating .device actuated by the controls of a phonograph whereby to permit connecting the radio amplifier and disconnecting the phonograph when it is de si'redto switch from phonographtoradior To this'end, as seen in Figure 1,- a rod or spindle 24', secured to=an arm 25 at its lower end profvided with a bifurcated portion 26 engaging the switch 22, extends upwardly through the motor board 13 to a phonograph starting lever or arm 2'? keyed or pinned, as at 28, to the upper end. of the rod 24. Intermediate its ends, this rod or spindle 24 may be provided with a bifurcated arm 29 mounted for rotation therewith by a pin 31 engaging a switch 32 mounted to the under side of the motor board 13 by a bracket 33 and connected to the leads or conductors lfi'for controlling the turntable motor, not shown.
Thus it will be seen that upon operation of the starting arm 2''! by its handle 34 to start the phonograph, the switch 32 connectsrthe turntable motor to its source of energy supply, thereby starting the turntable, and operates the selective switch 22 on the radio-chassis 23 to disconnect the radio amplifier and to connect the phonograph. The rod or spindle 24 is prefer ably actuated to start the turntable of. the phonograph II'by the manual operation of the handle'34. It is not necessary,
switch 32 in the motor circuit be operated from thisr'od or spindle. The invention contemplates the provision of any suitable motor for driving the turntable and'a means for releasing or starting sucha motor.
' After the record on the phonograph has been played the tone arm 17 engages the lug 35 which projectsupwardly from the arm 36. The arm 36 is rigidly secured by a rivet 38 to the lever 27so that the rod'24 is rotated by the displacement of the lug 35 by the tone arm after the playing of the record. This rotation of the rod 24 operates the. selective switch 22 on the chassis 23 to disconnect the phonograph amplifier and to reconnect the radio amplifier, thereby switching from the phonograph 11 to the radio set 12,
- and operates the switch 32 to stop the turntable motor. Instead of controlling the turntable 15 by controlling its motor from the switch 32 operated by. the switch operating arm 29 on the rod 24, the arm 36 or associated parts may actuate any suitable brake or stop lever adapted to dog or stop the turntable 15 directly whereby to mechanically stop the rotation of the turntable. Thus it will be seen that the invention contemplatesa phonograph control device which either electrically'or mechanically controls the rotation of the phonograph turntable and which operates the selective switch 22. v
I According to the embodiment of the invention shownin Figure 2, the selective switch 22 on the chassis or frame 23 is replaced by an electro-magnetic switch carried by the chassis member 23' comprising a solenoid 38, the core of which is connected by an arm 39 to a pivoted lever 41 mounted on a spindle or shaft 42 supported by a bracket 43. This bracket 43 may be secured directly to the chassis member 23', or to any suitable mounting near the amplifier in order to avoid long leads I or .wires from the amplifier to the switch, by rivets or..bolts,44 forsupporting the switch elements;
The shaft .42 is adaptedto be actuated by the solenoid 38, through the arm 39 against the tension of a spring 45 having an end secured to an car 46 on the end of the pivoted lever 41 and having its ,oppositeend engaging a stud or projection 4'1on the chassis member 23'. For this purpose the lever 41 is provided intermediate its ends with apawl 48 carried by a pivot pin 49 and held inengagement with a ratchet wheel 51bya spring 52 carried bythelever 41 adjacent the pawl. The
ratchet wheel 51 is carried on the shaft 42 which also carries a cam or toothed disc53 for operating closed upon operation of however, that the direction upon energization of the solenoid 38 from line conductors 61 connectible with a suitable source of energy, not shown. The energization of the solenoid 33is controlled by switch contacts 62 mountedby a bracket 63 to the under side of the motor board 13 adjacent the rod or spindle 24'. These switch contacts 62 are momentarily the starting arm 2'7 either to turn the phonograph off or on by an arm 64mounted on the lower end of the rod or spindle 24. The arm 64 may be integral with or separate from the arm 29' operating the motor switch 32.
' Thus the phonograph-radio selective switch of the invention enables an operator when desired to turn the radio oil and to start the phonograph by simply operating Upon completion of the record-or after a predetermined period of time,the tone-arm moving toward the center of the turntable will engage the trip arm 35 which actuates the arm 36. This arm 36, being connected to the lever 2'7, will stop the phonograph eitherby dogging the turntable or by opening the motor switch 32 by means of the bifurcated arm 29 and will operate either. the switch 22"or the electro-magneticswitch of Fig ure 2 to disconnect the phonograph amplifier and to connect the radio amplifier;
While I have illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of my inventiornmany modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and I donot wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth but desire to avail myself of all changes within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention,'what I claim as new and'desire to secure by United States Letters Patent ist 1. A control device for a phonograph and radio assembly, comprising a manually, operable, phonograph starting lever, a selective switch for the assembly, and means connected with said lever and switch and operable by the tone arm of the phonograph to simultanenously stop the phonograph and turn on the radio. v
2. A phonograph and radio assembly comprising a radio set, a phonograph having a turntable and an over-hanging tone arm, saidradio set comprising an audio amplifier adapted to amplify the phonograph signals, a switch adjacent said set selectively controlling said amplifier for said set and phonograph, a starting lever and a stop lever on said phonograph controlling. said turntable and interconnected, said starting lever being connected with said switch, and said stop lever being actuated by said 'tone arm to stop said turntable, and to operate said switch.
3. A combined phonograph and radio set comprising a turntable for carrying phonograph records, an automatic stop mechanicallycontrob ling said turntable, and a switch operable by said stop to automatically turn said radio set on when a recordhas been played. g

A combined radio receiver and phonograph, comprising a tone arm and a turntable for the phonograph, stopping means for said turntable, a switch adapted to turn on the radio, and mechanical means adapted to actuate said stopping means and saidswitch, said mechanical means being adapted to be actuated by the tone arm at the end of the playing of a record to stop the turntable and turn on radio reception.
6. A combined radio receiver and phonograph comprising a tone arm for the phonograph, a turntable for carrying records, a motor for turning the turntable, a switch controlling said motor, a switch for turning on the radio receiver, and mechanical means adapted to turn off said motor switch and turn on said radio receiver switch, said mechanical means being adapted to be actuated directly by the tone arm to throw said switches at the end of the playing of a record.

A combined radio receiver and phonograph, said radio receiver comprising radio frequency amplifying and audio frequency amplifying portions, a switch adapted to connect said portions in one position and to connect the audio frequency amplifying portion to the phonograph in its other position, and mechanical means adapted to actuate said switch, said mechanical means being adapted to be actuated by the tone arm at the end of the playing'of a record to turn on radio reception.
8. A combined radio receiver and phonograph, comprising a tone arm and a turntable for the phonograph, an amplifying system for radio and phonograph reception, a switch adapted to connect said system selectively to radio or phonograph devices, and mechanical means whereby said tone arm is enabled to throw said switch at the end of the playing of a record to turn on radio reception. A combination radio set and electric phonograph having a radio frequency amplifier, an audio frequency amplifier, a turntable adapted to carry a record, a tone arm, an electric pickup carried thereby, a selective switch for connecting said radio amplifier or said pick-up to said audio amplifier, means for stopping said turntable connected to said switch and adapted to be actuated by said tone arm when it reaches the end of the record, whereby the turntable is stopped and the switch is thrown to connect the radio amplifier to the audio amplifier.
10. A combination radio set and electric phonograph having a radio frequency amplifier, an audio frequency amplifier, a turntable adapted to carry a record, a tone arm, an electric pickup carried thereby, a selective switch for con-' necting said radio amplifier or said pick-up to said audio amplifier, means for stopping said turntable, said switch and said stopping means being adapted. to be actuated by said tone arm when it reaches the end of the record, whereby the turntable. is stopped and the switch is thrown to connect the radio amplifier to the audio amplifier.
