This invention relates to oven controls, and more particularly to oven controls for controlling the flow of fuel to the oven burners in accordance with certain predetermined temperature selections.
The invention is especially directed to domestic gas ranges having the oven chamber disposed in proximity to a plurality of open top or grate burners. It has been customary in ranges of this type to position the selecting mechanism for controlling the oven temperature in a position in proximity to the oven, and it has generally been disposed on the side oven wall above the open burners, in which position it is subjected to the heat from t -e.grate burners and is liable to be deformed and thus may become inaccurate or even inoperable. The opposite extreme of positioning the selecting and control mechanism on the remote oven side wall has been attempted, but this position necessitates considerably more conduit and also requires that the operator move to the opposite side of the oven in order to regulate the selecting mechanism.
Therefore, I propose, in the present invention, to position the-control mechanism in proximity to the gas cook controlling the flow of fuel to the oven burner. The selecting means is positioned in a convenient location on the oven door and is provided with suitable control transmitting means to transmit the desired temperature selection to the control mechanism. Thermostatic means are positioned within the oven wall and are susceptible to temperature changes to vary the control mechanism independently of the selecting mechanism. This variation is provided for the purpose of maintaining the temperature within-the oven at or very close to the temperature indicated by the selecting mechani m, and serves the purpose of a compensating means for maintaining the oven at the desired temperature.
It is therefore the purpose of the present invention to provide a selecting'mechanism disposed in a convenient and neatly appearing position on the oven door, with suitable. control transmitting means hidden from view and transversing the oven door through suitable conduit means to the control mechanism preferably positioned either in the lower portion of the side oven wall or below the oven, which control mechanism is in proximity to the gas cock supplying fuel to the oven burners; and also to provide suitable thermal compensating means for accurately limiting the temperature existing within the oven. It is a further object of the present invention to provide a' device as outlined above, which is of simple construction comprising relatively few parts, and capable of ac curate and reliable adjustment.
In order that those skilled in the art may more clearly understand the construction and operation of my invention, I shall now describe the same in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring now in more detail to Figures .1, 2 and 3, an ordinary type of oven or gas range is indicated by the reference numeral 10. This range comprises the oven 11, the open top or. grate area 12, with the open top burners (not shown), and the lower oven chamber 13. The

Referring now to Figure 2, which is a sectional View taken through the dial portion of the selecting mechanism, the oven wall is indicated at 14. Spaced inwardly from the wall 1% is an-inner lining wall 22,the spacebetween the walls i l-and adapted' to'serve as an insulating chamber. The lining wall 22has an opening formed therein, this opening being indicated generally by the reference numeral 23. This opening is formed by extending the portion 24 of the wall 22 inwardly into contact with the inner surface of ithewall :14, thusde- This recess a is of rectangular configuration in the illustrated form of-m-y invention, although this may be varied.
The housing 25, preferably cast of aluminum or some similar metallic substance, is adapted to be disposed onthe inner surface of the oven walhlfiiithin*the recess 23, and is secured thereto by means or the screws -26 passing'therethrough: and secured ina dial plate 27 positioned on the'outer surface cf the wall 14. The valve stem 62 passes outwardly and is engaged at its outer end by the control transmitting rod 49, this rod being firmly secured in the end of the valve stem 62 to actuate the valve member 58.
A hexagonal cap member or plug member 63 is threaded into the extending portion of the valve body 51 which surrounds the'valve stem, and is provided with a gasket 64 adapted to form a gas-tight seal therewith. This cap member 63 is provided with a central opening for receiving the valve stem 62, and is provided with an annular recess 65 about the valve stem 62 which is adapted to receive the packing 66. A bushing 6'7 is threaded into this recess to force the packing firmly around the valve stem and thus to provide a gas-tight seal between the stem and the cap member.
The bushing 67 is provided with an internal recess 68 adapted to receive one end of a spring member 69, the other end of the spring member fitting about the outwardly extending socket portion 60 of the valve member 58. This spring member tends normally to force the valve to a closed position. The spring member also tends to bias the valve about the valve stem 62 so that it will remain substantially perpendicular thereto at all times.
A member 70 is secured to the cap member 63, this member 70 being substantially of U-shaped form with the depending flange portions secured to the cap member by means of the screw 71. The outwardly extending portion of the member '70 is provided with a slotted opening '73 adapted to support the control transmitting rod 39 and to carry this rod into contact with the control stem 62. The flexible conduit surrounding the control transmitting rod 49 is suitably engaged and secured in a recessed portion '74 of the clip member, this conduit preferably extending partially therethrough.
It is thus apparent that upon actuation of the control transmitting rod 49 the valve will be opened to the position determined by the selecting dial knob 28. Movement of the thermal compensating element 38 after the initial setting has been obtained will result in variation of the opening of the valve member 58, resulting in variation of the flow of gas in the gas manifold 1'7 to the oven burner 16.
It is thus apparent that the operation of the selecting mechanism indicated at 21 will result in actuation of the control mechanism 20 to secure the proper flow of gas to the oven burners, depending upon the temperature desired in the oven. Thus, having once decided the temperature desired within the oven, the selecting dial knob 28 is rotated to position the pointer 29 at the indication on the dial plate 2'7 corresponding to this temperature. This causes the control stem 32 to be threaded outwardly from the housing 25, resulting in the shoulder member 40 bearing against the slotted end 37 of the thermal metallic element 38. The element 38 then rotates about the pin 41 as a pivot and bears against the pin 44, causing the rocker arm 45 to be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction. Upon rotation of the rocker arm 45,
the hooked portion 48 of the control transmit ting rod 49 will be raised in the conduit 50. This results in pulling the valve stem 62 to the right, as viewed in Figure 6. The valve member 58 is then'pulled ofi the seat 57 formed in the valve body 51 an amount corresponding to the flow of gas through the valve which will give the desired temperature within the oven.
The gas cock 18 is then turned to its on position, and gas from the gas manifold 17 passes through the valve 20 into the mixing chamber 19, is mixed with the proper quantity of air, and the combustible mixture passes to the oven burner 16. 7
By means of the adjusting screw 34, the dial 28 can be rotated with respect tothe valve control stem 32 to any given angular position, depending upon the type of burner used in the construction of the oven, so that for a given setting of the selecting mechanism 21 the valve 20 will be actuated to a position corresponding to this setting. This can ,be accurately calibrated'so that the temperature within the oven will be that shown by the selecting mechanism. If for any reasonoutside temperature changes or the like'vary the temperature within the oven from that desired, the thermal compensating element 38 will be actuated to maintain the oven temperature at the point desired by the setting of the selecting mechanism. Openings indicated at 74', in the inner liner 22 of the oven door, allow the hot air or gases from the oven to circulate through corresponding openings 75 formed in the inwardly bent over portions 24 of the liner 22 so that the hot gases will pass up and around the e1ement'38, and thus allow the element 38 to assume the temperature within the oven. If the temperature within the oven is slightly below the temperature desired by the position of the selecting mechanism, the elements 38 will bend so as to open the valve 20 to allow more fuel to reach the burner 16. If the temperature within the oven is higher than that desired, the element 38 will bend in the opposite direction to allow the valve member 58 to assume a positionnearer to the valve seat 57, thus limiting the flow of fuel to the burner 16. It is thus apparent that the desired temperature will be maintained within the oven, after the selecting mechanism 21 has once been set to the proper position, by means of the automatic thermal compensator provided by the member Referring now in more detail to the embodiment shown in Figures 7 to 10, the positioning of the selecting means is similar to that described in connection with Figures 1 to 4, but the dial of this embodiment is of the hidden dial? type and has only the control knob or selecting knob positioned on the exterior surface of the oven door. The control means is positioned between the spaced side walls of the oven 'below the oven burner, and the control transmit-- ting means is led from the selecting means through the oven door, below the bottom tray of the oven, to the side wall of the oven, where it is conducted to a suitable thermally compensating means positioned on the inner surface of the oven liner near the top of the oven, and
the control leads from there down between the spaced side walls of the oven to the control device. r I

In operation, the selecting means 83 is rotated to the desired position, causing the bell crank member 115 to pull on the control transmitting rod 120. This control transmitting rod transmits tension to the sleeve member 132 which tends to rotate the thermally sensitive member 123 about its pivot point in a clockwise direction, causing the other end thereof to pull on the control. transmitting rod 128 which leads to the control valve and thereby causes opening'of the valve. It is apparent that there will be no lost motion connection in the entire control transmitting linkage, and any movement of the selecting device 83 will result in a corresponding opening or closing of the control valve 90. After the desired temperature has been selected by the selecting'means and the control valve has been opened a proportionate amount, any increase or decrease of temperature within the oven will result in fluctuation or warping of the thermally sensitive member 123.
This is occasioned by the fact that the member 123 is composed of a pair of thermally sensitive metals which have difierent coefficients of expansion. The member having the greater coefficient of expansion is indicated by the numeral 133, while the member having the smaller coefficient of expansion is indicated at 134. If the temperature within the oven reaches a point higher than that desired, the thermally sensitive member 123 will warp inwardly, tending to release the stress on the control transmitting rod 120a and thus allow the control valve to assume a less open position. Upon dropping of the temperature within the oven, the member 123 will tend to straighten and will again open the valve to a more open position. This results in constantly maintaining the desired temperature within the oven. The control valve and connection of the control rod. therewith may be substantially the same as in the preceding embodiment.
It is therefore apparent that I have provided an oven control which comprises a selecting mechanism positioned upon the face of the oven door, and which is provided with control transmitting means leading to a suitable control valve positioned between the mixing chamber leading from the gas supply manifold and the oven burners. I have also provided means, carried by the oven wall, for automatically varying the position of the control valve to correspond to variations of temperature occurring within the oven, and to maintain the temperature within the oven at the point desired by the initial setting of the selecting mechanism. The thermally operated device of this embodiment may, of course, be carried by or associated with the selecting devices as in the preceding embodiment.
The appearance of the device as mounted upon the face of the oven door greatly enhances the general appearance of the oven, provides a very convenient position for the selecting mechanism, and also disposes this mechanism in a position remote from theheat of the open top or grate burners where it will function reliably under all conditions. As will be noted, the entire control mechanism with the exception of the selecting knob or dial knob,
can be positioned within the oven walls and can be accurately calibrated so that after installation no further attention is needed.
I do not intend to be limited to the specific embodiment shown and described, but only in so far as defined by the scope and spirit of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The combination with an oven having a movable door of a heat regulator for the oven, comprising a selecting device mounted upon and movable with said door, a controlling device, means continuously connecting said controlling device and said selecting device for setting the controlling device by means of said selecting device independently of the position of said selecting device, and a thermally operated device for varying the setting of said controlling device automatically with temperature changes.
2. The combination with an oven having a door provided with an inner Wall of a heat regulator for the oven, comprising a controlling device, a thermally operated device mounted between the inner and outer walls of the oven door, a selecting device connected to said thermally operated device, said selecting device being mounted upon the oven door and accessible for manipulation from the front of said door, and flexible motion transmitting means extending between said walls and connecting said selecting device and said control device for conjoint movement.
3. The combination with an oven having a door, and hinge means for said door, of a heat regulator for the oven, including a control device, a selecting device mounted upon the oven door, and means extending along and below position in proximity to the hinged part of the door for connecting said selecting device and said control device.
4. In a domestic gas range having an oven and a door therefor, an oven control comprising a fuel supply conduit, a gas cook therefor, a burner in said oven, a mixing chamber positioned between said cock and said burner, selecting means positioned on the door, a control valve in said fuel supply line, and flexible motion transmitting means between said selecting means and control valve.

In a domestic gas range having an oven and a door therefor, an oven control comprising a fuel supply conduit supported on said oven, a burner in said oven, a mixing chamber positioned between said conduit and said burner, selecting means positioned on the door of said oven, a control valve remote from said selecting means and mounted in fixed position in said fuel supply conduit to said burner exteriorly of said oven, flexible motion transmitting mechanism between said selecting means and said control valve, and thermally sensitive means for continuously maintaining the position of said control valve at a predetermined point.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned on said door, a thermally sensitive member disposed in the side Wall of said oven remote from said door, said selecting means adjusting the position of said thermally sensitive member, a control device, and means for trans- 35 mitting the action of said thermally sensitive member to said control device.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in a recess formed in the inner surface of said door, a thermally sensitive member, said selecting means adjusting the position of said thermally sensitive member, a control device, and flexible means for transmitting the action of said thermally sensitive member to said control device.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in a recess formed in the inner surface of said door, a thermally sensitive member disposed within said recess and engaging said selecting means, a closure plate for said recess, a control device disposed exteriorly of said oven, said selecting means adjusting the position of said thermally sensitive member, and
means for transmitting the action of said thermally sensitivemember to said control device independently of the position of said door.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in a recess formed in the inner surface of said door, a pivoted thermally sensitive member disposed within said recess, said selecting means being rotated to rock said thermally sensitive member about its pivot, a control device, and means for transmitting the action of said thermally sensitive member to said control device independently of the position of said door.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in a recess formed in the inner surface of said door, a thermally sensitive member disposed within said recess and being pivotally mounted 'tobe engaged at one end by said selecting means, said selecting means being rotatable to rock said thermally sensitive member about its pivot, a control device, and means for transmitting the action of said thermally sensitive member to said control device comprising a flexible member capable of transmitting tension and compression stresses.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in said door, a thermally sensitive member remote from said door, a control device, and flexible means for transmitting the action of said selecting means through said thermally sensitive member tosaid control device.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in said door, a thermally sensitive member remote from said door, a control device, and flexible means for transmitting the action of said selecting means through said thermally sensitive member tosaid control device, said means permitting independent movement of said thermally sensitive member to be transmitted to said control device.
17.'In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in said door, a thermally sensitive member mounted on the inner surface of said oven remote from said door, a control device, and flexible means for transmitting the action of said selecting means through said thermally sensitive member to said control device.

In an oven having an oven door, a thermally operated device comprising selecting means positioned in said door, a thermally sensitive member remote from said door, flexible means positioned between said selecting means and said thermally sensitive member for transmitting movement of said selecting means to permitting independent movement of said thermally sensitive member relative said selecting means to be transmitted to said control device.
19. In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having an oven door, selecting means mounted on the door of said oven, control means positioned below said oven, and means for transmitting movement of said selecting means to said control means independently of movement of said door.
20. In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having an oven door, selecting means mounted on the door of said oven, control means positioned below said oven, and flexible motion transmittingmeans between said selecting means and said control means.

In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having an oven door, selecting means mounted on the door of said oven,- control means positioned below said oven, and motion transmitting means including a rocker arm pivoted adjacent said selecting means and responsive to rotation thereof and a flexible cable between said arm and said control means.

In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having an oven door, selecting means mounted on the door of said oven, control means positioned below said oven, a thermally sensitive member pivoted Within the inner and outer walls of sai'd'oven' and actuatedlSii on said by said selecting means, and flexible means extending between the walls of the door of said oven for transmitting movement from said thermally sensitive member to said control means.

In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having a door hinged at one edge thereof, selecting means mounted on the door of said oven, control means disposed below said oven, and means for transmitting movement of said selecting means through the hinged edge of said door to said control means.

In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven having inner and outer oven walls and a door for said oven having inner and outer walls, a selecting device mounted on said door, control means positioned below said oven, and means for transmitting movement from said selecting device to said control means, said motion transmitting means extending between the walls of said door and between the inner and outer walls of said oven.

A temperature control for an oven having an oven door comprising selecting means disposed on said door, a control device disposed below said oven, a thermally sensitive element disposed in a side wall of said oven, and means disposed entirely within the walls of said oven and said door for transmitting movement of said selecting means and said thermally sensitive element to said control device.

A temperature control for an oven having an oven door comprising selecting means disposed on said door, a control device disposed below said oven, a thermally sensitive element disposed in a side wall or" said oven, and means disposed entirely within the walls of said oven and said door for transmitting movement of said selecting means through said thermally sensitive element to said control device.

a thermally sensitive element disposed on the inner wall of said oven, and means for transmitting movement of said selecting device to said thermally sensitive element extending through the hinged edge of said door and through the air space between said oven walls.

In combination, in an oven having inner and outer walls defining an air space therebetween, an oven door hinged along one edge to said oven, a selecting device mounted on said door, a control device disposed below said oven, a thermally sensitive element disposed on the inner wall of said oven, and means transmitting movement of said selecting device to said thermally sensitive element and from said thermally sensitive element to said control device, said means extending through the hinged edge of said door and through the air space between said oven walls.

In combination, in a temperature control device for an oven, a door for said oven having inner and outer walls therefor, a housing mounted in said door, selecting means carried thereby, a thermally sensitive member pivoted housing and disposed between said walls, said inner wall having openings providing for circulation of air from said oven past said thermally sensitive element, control means disposed below said oven, and means extending -',,dcwnwardly from said housing between the walls of said door fortransmitting movement of said selecting means through said thermally sensitive element .to said control means.

In combination, an oven having a door provided with inner and outer walls, a heat regulator for said oven disposed exteriorly thereof, a .thermally. sensitive devicemounted between theinner' and outer walls of said door, and motion transmitting means effecting connection betweensaid thermally sensitive device and said regulator in all positions of said door.

In combination, an oven having a door, selecting means mounted thereon, a thermally sensitive device disposed in said oven, a control device disposed in fixed position exteriorly of said oven, and motion transmitting means between said selecting device, thermally sensitive device and control device and operable in all positions of said door.

The combination with an oven having a movable door, of a heat regulator for said oven including a selecting device mounted upon and movable with said door, a control device fixed in position exteriorly of said oven, and motion transmitting means between said selecting means and said control device operable independently of the position of said door.

Selecting means for an oven having an oven door provided with inner and outer walls, comprising a housing secured between said walls, a selecting spindle extending through said housing, a control knob carried by said spindle exteriorly of said door, a pair of shoulder portions formed on said housing, a lever member intermediately pivoted between said shoulder members, means for connecting one end of said lever member to the inner extending end of said spindle, and motion transmitting means extending between said walls and engaged by the opposite end of said lever member.

Selecting means for an oven having an oven door provided with inner and outer walls, comprising a housing secured between said walls. a selecting spindle extending through said housing and said outer wall, a control knob secured to said spindle exteriorly of said door, a dial member mounted on said spindle between said housing and said outer wall, said outer wall having an opening aligned with the indicating portion of said dial member, pivot means carried by said housing, a lever member having one end secured to said spindle and bearing against said pivot means intermediate its ends, and motion transmitting means supported by said housing and engaged by the other end of said lever member.

In combination, in an oven control of the class described, an oven having inner and outer walls, a selecting device, a control device, a housing mounted on said inner wall and having a central fulcrum portion extending into said oven, a thermally sensitive member mounted intermediate its ends for rocking movement about said fulcrum portion, motion transmitting means extending from said selecting device be- 9: new
