' Claims.
This invention relates to battery terminals and more particularly to a non-corrosive terminal.
An object of this invention is to provide a terminal which may be mounted on any conventional battery terminal post andlwhich is so con-' structed that the cable secured thereto will be protected from'ga-ses exuding from the battery Another object of this invention is to provide a batterytermin'al of this kind which is so construc'ted that the cableprotecting portion of the terminal can be substantially permanently secured to the battery post and the cable readily re- Q moved from or secured to the protector.
is i
The above and various other objects and advantages of this invention will in part be described and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred enrbodiment, the same being illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein:-
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention.
I Figure 2 is a sectional View taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 but showing the terminal in applied position on a battery terminal post.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1. Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the views, the letter P designates generally a battery terminal post having a flanged lower end portion F at the lower end thereof.
In order to prevent the gases exuding from about the battery terminal post P from corroding the terminal mounted on the post P, I have provided a hood or cap 10 which is closed at the top 11 thereof and which is loosely disposed about the tapering surface of the post P. The lower or open end of the hood 10 contacts with a washer or annulus 13, which washer engages the top of the flange F and seals the hood 10 about the post P. The hood 10 is constructed of dielectric material and a sleeve 12 of similar material is integral with the hood l0 and extends laterally thereof and is provided at the outer end with an opening 18.
A metallic sleeve, generally designated as 14,
is disposed within the sleeve 12 and is preferably secured within this sleeve 12 when the sleeve 12 is molded or'cast so that the sleeve 14 will be firmly or fixedly disposed within the sleeve 12.
The sleeve 14 is provided at the inner end thereof with threads 15 which threads terminate at a point intermediate the inner and outer ends of the metallic sleeve 14, and a set screw 16 is threaded within this threaded inner end portion and is provided with a reduced inner end 17 adapted to bite into the periphery of the post P.
In the present instance, the set screw 16 is provided with a kerf 19 so that a screw driver or the like may be used totighten or loosen this set, screw 16. t 1 t A cable or wire C, which has a cap or cylindrical member 20 securedto the inner end thereof is. adapted to be removably disposed within the sleeve 14 and preferably the cylindrical member 26 is constructed of metal, and the end of the cable 0 is soldered or otherwise firmly secured within the member 20. The sleeve 14 is provided with an annular groove 21 at a point outwardly from the outer end of the threads 15 and a spring pressed cable locking member 22 is disposed within the cylindrical member 20 at the inner end thereof and is yieldably held within the groove 21 by means of a spring 23.
In the use of this improved terminal and terminal protector, the hood 10 is slipped over the post P and the Washer 13 is interposed between the lower end of the hood 10 and the bottom of the post P or the flange F. A slight pressure is initially placed on the hood 10 so as to compress the washer 13 and thereby seal the hood 10 on the post P and the set screw or securing member 16 is then turned inwardly so that the reduced inner end 17 will bite into the periphery of the post P. The end of the cable C can then be slipped into the smooth outer portion of the metallic sleeve 14 until the spring pressed locking member 22 engages in the annular groove 21. The cable C is then removably secured within the sleeve 12 and as no metal is exposed to any gases which might exude from the top of the battery, no corrosion will take place about the top of the post P in a manner to injure the cable C or its contact with the post P.
It is, of course, understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is:-
