My invention relates to bags, and has special reference to multi-wall bags that are particularly adapted for cement and other weighty substances.
i One of the objects of the invention is to provide a novel and improved bag of this character.
'Another of the objects of the invention is to provide a multi-wall bag of the character indicated having at least one of its ends closed by a satchel type closure of novel and improved construction.
Referring to the drawing,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly diagrammatical, of a bag embodying the fea- 16 tures of my invention in their preferred form, the section being taken substantialy on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; and
' Fig. 2 is a sectional view, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The bag illustrated in the drawing is of the type of the one described and claimed in my pending application Ser. No. 274,330, filed May 1, 1928, entitled Sacks with automatic closing means. The bag is formed from a multi-wall bag tube which has been flattened. At least one end of the tube is folded to provide asatchel-like bottom.
This satchel bottom has side flaps 1 and 2, a
- reinforcing strip 3, and end flaps 4 which are preferably provided with inwardly projecting tongues 5 of corrugated or crinkled paper.-
In one form of bag illustrated in said pending application, the side flaps 1 and 2 have their end portions arranged in overlapping relation.
Also in the bag shown in said pending application the reinforcing strip is substantially twice the length of the side flaps and is folded over the under and upper sides of the side flaps.
In accordance with the present invention. in
its preferred form, the side flaps have their edges arranged in edge to edge relation and substantially in contact.
Also, in accordance with the present invention, the reinforcing strip 3 is preferably substantially three times the length of the side flaps. The portion of this strip 3 intermediate its ends extends over the under side of the side flaps and its projecting end portions are folded down over the outer side of the side flaps, said end portions being arranged in overlapping relation. The reinforcing strip is of substantially the combined width of the side flaps so as to extend over substantially the entire area thereof.
Preferably, also, said reinforcing strip is pasted New York, N. Y.
1932, Serial No. 600,883
areas of the upper and lower sides of the side 6 flaps, said side flaps being arranged in edge to edge relation as described. Also, by the provision of the overlapping portions of the reinforcing strip which extend over the top side of the side flaps, the side flaps are firmly and securely held in position. As the reinforcing strip is bent over both ends of the side flaps, said ends are effectively reinforced, and as these end portions together with the end flaps 4 provide valves in opposite ends of the satchel bottom, reinforcements at this point are of considerable practical importance.
,While this method of reinforcement is particularly adapted where valves are employed in both ends of the satchel bottom, it will be apparent that it is also well adapted where a valve is provided in but one end of the satchel bottom, and also where the satchel bottom is employed on the unvalved end of the bag.
It will also be apparent to those skilled inthe .art that my invention permits various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a multi-ply bag of the class described having a satchel type end, the improvement which comprises a reinforcing strip having a portion intermediate its ends extending over the under side of the side flaps of the satchel end, and both of the projecting ends thereof extending over the outer side of the side flaps and arranged in overlapping relation, said overlapping portions of the reinforcing strip being secured together and extending substantially the length of the side flaps.
2. In a multi-ply bag of the class described having a satchel type end, the improvement which comprises a reinforcing strip having a portion intermediate its ends extending over the under side of the side flaps of the satchel end, and both of the projecting ends thereof extending over the outer side of the side flaps and arranged in overlapping relation, said overlapping portions of the reinforcing strip being secured together and extending substantially the length and width of the side flaps.
