This invention relates to a spool and has special reference to a sheet metal spool for association particularly with devices for dispensing binding tape, ribbon and the like. "More particularly, this invention relates to a Sheet A.metal spool for rotatable'support at the ends thereof, each `end being provided with an axialopening and a plurality of auxiliary openings disposed around the axial opening for engagement with predetermined types of supports.
In devices for dispensing a binding medium, it is desirable to provide a tension on the spool Afor preventing a rotation thereof to unwind the medium more than is actually necessary Vfor use. Further, in severing Vthe medium, itis desirable to have Ya tension thereon to eliminate the necessity of ,holding the medium While severing the tape from thelio'lder. The present invention contemplates 4the provision of la spool particularly adapted .for ,use in an apparatus having `the above desired qualifications, the spool being fool-,proof in that the `ends may -be interchangeable in the supports therefor, the `supports being of differenteonstructions. However, it is to be understood that .although .the `spool will hereinafter 'be described `in .association with a .particular dispensing device, .the .use thereof is merely `illustrative ofits .characteristic features and the invention 4is not to be limited solely `to its .employment therewith.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing the apparatus on which the spool is shown comprises a base member 10, which is `preferably cast of a suitable substance, -such as iron, brass, aluminiun or the like, having substantial weight, althoughit is'to be'understoodthat the base may be drawn or formed of a sheet metal. The casting is provided with rubber feet 1'1, in order to prevent'the marring of a nishedsurfacathe weight of .the material of thecasting providing the stabilizing means forthe apparatus. However, apertures are provided in the base through 4which screw members, or other securing means may 4be extended to nx the :base to a counter or the like, apertures being particularly .desirable when the base is formed of sheet metal.
`A pair of ,endsupports 12 and 13 are provided on each side of the casting and extend vertically therefrom, the supports comprising generally a pair `of jleg members 14 to be xedly secured to the base and a .bearing member 15 at the upper end thereof to receive supporting means for the spool.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawing, the .bearing 15 is Vprovided with a central .longitudinally extending .aperture for receiving ,a stud shaft 16 preferably formed integrally With la plate member 17, the shaft having a reduced circumferential portion 18 within the aperture ofthe bearing into .which a springv pressed plunger 19 is engaged. The plunger 19 is disposed in va vertically extending recess of an extension of the bearing member 15 and is pressed upwardly into engagement with the reduced portion 18. Any desired amount of tension may be had on the yplunger 19 as by means of tightening ,or 'loosening a thumb screw 20 which threadedly engages a continuation of the aperture into which the plunger. 19 is fitted. A plurality of pins or lugs 21 are disposed on the face side of the plate 17, the pins being equidistantly spaced from the axis of the plate and from each other peripherally. Thus the rotation of the plate 17 is restrained by the spring pressed plunger 19 to a desired degree.
Referring now more particularly to Fig. 5 of the drawing the other end support 12 is shown and comprises a pintle 22 disposed in a longitudinally extending aperture in the bearing 15, the pintle being recessed a substantial distance on the inner end thereof to accommodate one end of the coil spring, the other end of the spring bearing against the end wall of the aperture. The outer end of the pintle 22 has a reduced extension thereon for a purpose which will hereinafter be more fully described. The longitudinal movement of the pintle is determined by a bayonet slot 24 through which a handle 25 extends. The pintle 22 may be retracted from its extended position as shown in Fig. 5 by moving the handle 25 to the left and thereafter moving the same downwardly in the vertically extending portion of the slot, this slot retaining the pintle in its retracted position.
The spool of this invention, which is to be illustrated in its association with the hereinbefore described apparatus, comprises a cylindrical shell member 26 formed preferably of sheet metal or of metal tubing. The cylindrical portion may extend any desirable length and may be of any diameter consistent with the gauge material ernployed. Given any desired length, the material of the cylindrical shell may be formed outwardly and back upon itself to form a shoulder 27. A spool head 28 having a central aperture substantially smaller in diameter than the outer diameter of the cylindrical shell 26 is disposed against the shoulder 27, whereafter the end portion of the cylindrical shell 26 adjacent to the shoulder 27 is extended through the aperture of the spool head 28 and is flanged over the outer side thereof to hold the head in a fixed position .against the shoulder 27. The outer periphery of the head 28 is beaded over as at 29 to strengthen the head.
A cup-shaped sheet metal member 30 is disposed at each end of the cylindrical shell 26, the open end of the cup-shaped members being internal of the cylindrical shell and being of a diameter to snugly engage the inner diameter of the shell. A peripheral groove 31 is provided near the outer end of the cup-shaped member 30 to receive and to engage the ilanged over portion of the spool head 28.
The closed end of the cup-shaped member 30, that is, the outer end thereof, is provided with an axial opening 32 and a plurality of auxiliary apertures 33 disposed about the axial opening 32. The apertures 33 are preferably stamped from the material forming an annular groove 34, which is depressed from the surface of the member 30. The apertures 33 are preferably equidistantly spaced from the axis of the cup-shaped member and equidistantly spaced peripherally, corresponding thereby to the lugs 21 provided on the face plate 17. A flange is provided from the material surrounding the opening 32 whereby a bearing portion is provided to seat on the reduced extension 23 of the pintle 22, the shoulder formed at the junction of the reduced extension 23 and the pintle 22 abutting against the face side of the cup-shaped member 30 adjacent the opening 32.
When it is desired to position the spool within the apparatus for dispensing the tape, the pintle 22 is retracted and either end of the spool is presented to the supporting member or plate 17. The groove 34 in the spool greatly facilitates the registration of the apertures 33 and the lugs 2l, the lugs dropping into the annular recessed portion, whereafter the spool is rotated slightly until the lugs drop into the apertures. The handle 25 is raised out of the vertically extending portion of the slot 24, whereafter the coil spring associated with the pintle 22 urges the latter into engagement with the other end of the spool, that is, the reduced extension 23 engaging the opening 32. The spool in its association with the present apparatus is frictionally held against rotation by the action of the spring pressed plunger 19, and it is, therefore, not necessary to manually hold the binding medium on each side of the cutting device while severing the binding medium contained on the spool, the device being illustrated in the drawing and indicated by the numeral 35.
As a result of this invention a desirable spool may be formed inexpensively of sheet metal which spool is rigid and durable and is so constructed as to be capable of alternately engaging various types of predetermined supports such as has been illustrated in the drawing.
While but a single embodiment of this application is herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various modifications thereof may be apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention and, therefore, the same is to be limited only by the scope of the appended claims and the prior art.
I claim:
l. A spool adapted to be rotatably supported at the ends thereof comprising a cylindrical shell having closed ends, said ends having an axial opening for engagement with a support and an annular groove, said groove having openings therein for engagement with another predetermined type of support whereby the ends of said spool are interchangeable in said supports.
2. A spool adapted to be rotatably supported at the ends thereof comprising a cylindrical shell having cup-shaped members for enclosing the ends thereof, the walls of said cup-shaped members being interior of said shell and having annular grooves for receiving extending portions of said shell to prevent end displacement of said members, said members having openings for engaging predetermined types of supports.
3. A spool adapted to be rotatably supported at the ends thereof comprising a cylindrical shell having cup-shaped members for enclosing the ends thereof, the walls of said cup-shaped members being interior of said shell and havingI annular grooves for receiving integrally formed extending portions of said shell to prevent end displacement of said members, said portions securing said spool heads in position, said members having openings for engaging predetermined types of supports.
