' 2 Claims. (01. 128-232) I The present invention relates to improvements insurgical instruments and has reference more particularly to a vaginal atomizer.
The primary object of the present invention is 8 to provide a device for treating vaginal diseases by the application of atomized medicated. fluid and this in a positive and eificient manner.
.One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a vaginal atomizer of the above mentioned character wherein the application of medicinal agents to the entire mucous membrane of the vaginal tract and the cervix uteri can be accomplished in such a manner as not to cause a local over dosage.
A still further object is to provide a vaginal atomizer having a dilator structure associated with the tube, so that theapplication of the treatment may be had tosuch extentthatl'all the folds of the vaginal canal are eliminated While the medical agents are being applied directly to the diseased mucous membrane and the cervix uteri.
-A still further object is to provide a'vag'inal atomizer of the above mentioned character that isiadapted to be detachably associateed with the ,spray nozzle of the Well known De Vilbiss atomizer, the parts of my device being of such construction as to permit the same to be readily assembled and disassembled for cleaning purposes and sterilization.
'Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
i-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the vaginal atomizer embodying my invention, showing the dilator in its contracted position;
;Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the dilator in its expanded position;
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view taken q proximately on the line 44 of Figure 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
Figure 5 is a similar section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of the same figureand also looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings, wherein vfor the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a spray atomizer of the De Vilbiss type, the same including a receptacle 2 adapted to con- ,7 that slidably fits over the tube ofthe atomizer the outward springing of the hollow arms of .the enlarged nozzle 8, the samebeing provided .ward end.
' tain'a suitable liquid to be atomized or vaporized.
The body of the atomizing tube which is threaded or otherwise secured to the receptacle 2 is indicated generally at 3. The atomizing tube that is carried by the body 3 comprises a pair of 60 spring tubular arms .4, the same having associated' with the outer free ends thereof. the nozzle '5. The atomizer 2, of course, has communication with the contents of the receptable 2 and the usual pneumatic bulb that is attached to .the body of the atomizing tube, so as to force air, in the usual manner, into the receptacle so as to force the liquid upwardly through the tube and into the atomizing tube is shown .at6.
My attachment for this type of spray atomizer comprises an elongated metallic vaporizing tube 1 and is frictionally held thereon by reason of the atomizing tube. The forward end of the metallic vaporizing tube '7 has formed thereon with therestricted discharge opening 9 at its for- For the purpose of additionally securing the .80 metallic tube in position on the atomizing tube 4, the rear end of the vaporizingtube '7 is formed with the spring clip 10, formed by providing the rearwardly extending lip at the top of the .1 rear end portion of the metallic tube and curving the free end of this lip downwardly and then upwardly in the manner as readily obvious from the construction shown in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings. This spring clip 10 engages with P the top of the body 3 in the manner as also shown very clearly in Figures 1 and 3. A protuberance 11 is formed on the top of the metallic vaporizing tube '7 adjacent the open rear end thereof for a purpose to be presently described.
As is more clearly illustrated in Figure 2 of the drawings, the atomizing nozzle 5 is located in close proximity to the discharge opening 9 of the nozzle 8. Upon referring to the same figure, it will also be observed that the bottom portion of the rear end of the metallic vaporizing tube 7 is cut away in order to permit the rear end portion of this tube to fit around the adja cent portion of the body 3 when the vaporizing tube '7 is positioned on the hollow arms of the... atomizing tube 4.
Fixedly arranged on the intermediate portion of the metallic tube 7 is the expansion disk or plate 12, the same being. formed with an annular series of spaced openings 13 to permit backflow. of the fluid when the atomizer is in use.
Cooperating with the stationary disk or plate 12 is an expansible and contractible dilator denoted generally by the numeral 14. This dilator includes a collar 15 that is slidable on the rear end portion of the metallic vaporizing tube '7 between the protuberance l1 and the fixed disk or plate 12. A series of spring dilating arms 16 have their free ends extending radially into the periphery of the collar 15, thesespring arms extending forwardly-and surrounding the vaporizing tube' '7 and the disk 12, the forward'free ends of the arms terminating in curved finger'portions- 17 in the conventional manner.
As is shown more clearly in Figures 1 and 2;
the dilator 14 is in its contracted position and;
the finger portions 17 extend beyond the nozzle 8. However, when the dilator is moved rearwardly to the position shown in Figure; 3, the
disk or plate 12 will engage the spring arms 16, causing the same to expand radially and when in this position, the hnger portions 17 will be dis.-
posed circumferentially around the nozzle 8,
With the parts'arranged as shown in Figure 3,;the device is then ready for use. j
A vaginal atomizer of the above mentioned character will insure positive and eflicientmedication of the mucous membrane surfaces ofthe vaginal canal and the cervix uteri and insuch fmanner that nolocal Overdosage will occur.'
30 inal canal while the medical agents are being applied directly, to the diseased mucous membrane andgfurthermore, the medication will be Thedilator willeliminate all folds 'of the vagentirely atomized or vaporized beforeit comes contact with the mucous surface of the entire vaginal; wall. I
The simplicity ofmy device enablesthe parts lto be readily and easily assembledor disassembled for sterilization purposes and furthermore, themetallic tube and-dilator can be readily andeasily attached to orremoved from a file Vilbissf-atomizer.
While I- have shown the preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood; that minor changes in thesize, shape and-arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
