IMPROVEMENT IN CUFFS.

Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 196,556, dated October 30,1877; application filed September 29, 1877.

To all whom it may concern: 1

Be it known that I, EDGAR K. BETTs, of Lansingburg, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Oufl, of which the followingis a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, Fig. 2 a rear view, of my improved cuff; and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical sections on enlarged scale, respectively, on lines 0 c and w a, Fig. 1, showing the construction of the cuff and the re-enforcing stays of the button-holes.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to an improved construction of detachable cuff,-with'two-ply center part or band for ladies and gents wear, by which the button-holes are re-enforc'ed, so as to sustain the strain thereon, and by which, at a saving of material, a durable, ornamental, and stylish cuff is furnished.

The invention. consists of a cuff made of a continuous back part, sectional intermediate layers, and front parts, and of a face-strip that connects the intermediate and front sections, and is extended over the end' of the cuff and down at the back to form stays for menforcing the button-holes at the points of greatest strain. p

By referring to the drawing, A represents my improved detachable cufi, which is made of a continuous back part, a, .of about the size of the cuff, intermediate-stiffening layers 1), and front sections d, which are sewed to the sides of the back part and then turned right side out to the front, leaving, then, an open center space between the intermediate layers and face-sections. This space is. closed. by a central face-strip, B, with folded edges that are connected to the sections b and d by running two parallel lines of stitches, one at each edge of the center-strip, over the entire length of the cuff, andlapping the ends of the strip B over to the back of the end, so as to form cross-stays e for the button-holes, and strengthening them at the points that have to sustain the strain, as shown in Fig. 2.

The stitched and folded edges of the center face-strip B form raised beads along the inner edges of the intermediate layers and front sections, the beads forming the sides of the two-ply center-band of the cuff, as shown in Fig. 3.

These beads impart a stylish and ornamental character to the cuff, while the construction of the cufl offers at the same time a considerable saving in the material required, as for the face-strips a number of narrow strips of linen may be utilized that were hitherto wasted in the manufacture of ends.

The reenforcing stays of the button-holes strengthen the ends of the center-band, so as to make a more durable cuff, that combines an elegant appearance with cheapness of construction.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A detachable cuff with light center-band, made of a continuous back part, shorter intermediate stiffening-layers, and front sections, turned over to the front, and of a connecting center face-strip, stitched to the inner edges of the intermediate and face sections, substantially as set forth.

2. A detachable cuff with light center-band, made of a continuous back part, shorter intermediate stiffening-layers, and fiont sections that are turnedover to the front and connected by a center face-strip sewed to the cuff, so as to form beaded edges for the center part, substantially as shown and described.

3. A detachable cuff with light center-band, made of a continuous back part, shorter intermediate and front sections that are turned over to the front, and connected by a center face-strip stitched to the inner edges of the shorter sections and lapped over the ends of the cuff to form strengthening-stays for the button-holes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
