In order to maintain the proper distance between the axes of spindle 19 and shaft 28 there is provided an adjustable link connection. The
44 and 45, each having a threaded socket 46 and 47 receiving opposite ends of turn buckle screw 48. The plates 46 and 47 are respectively secured to the turned trunnion portion 49 on the grinding wheel carriage 18 and a trunnion 50 on the end of bearing sleeve 31.
By reference to Figure 2, it will be noted that movement of the carriage 18 on the ways 17 will tend to increase the distance between the axes of spindle 19 and shaft 28 but, due to the connection between these shafts, said movement of the carriage will oscillate the sleeve 31 about the axis of the trunnions of bracket 39 thereby at all times maintaining the same driving tension in the belts or transmission members 33. In order to properly tension the transmission chain 26 the plate 40 tent of the said belt 26 by loosening the clamp bolts 41 and shifting said plate at which time the bolts 41 are again tightened.
The bracket 39 is provided interiorly thereof with bearings 51 and 52 for a pump shaft 53 journaled therein. This shaft 53 may be termed the main pump shaft and it has secured to it a pinion 54 about which is trained a gear chain pump pistons 58. The pump pistons 58 are enclosed in a suitable casing 59 secured to the bracket 39. The said main pump is utilized for vdelivering liuid under high pressure for actuating various units of a machine tool organization, such as the wheel head or carriage, for example.
Secured to the trunnion 38 is the housing or casing 60 of a twin gear booster portion thereof of the bracket 39. The pump 60 is provided with a pump shaft 6l extending beyond the ends of said pump. One end 62 of the shaft 61 is journaled in a socket formed in the adjacent end of the main pump shaft 53 and the said end of the pump shaft 53 has a slot 63 formed therein receiving a pin 64 extending from opposite sides of the shaft 61. From this it will be seen that rotation of the shaft 53 will, through the slot and pin connection, drive the shaft 61. will be apparent that the axial shafts need not fine limits since It will be apparent that the shaft 67 is rotated from the shaft 61 and, similar to the alignment of shafts 53 and 6.1, the shaft 67 need not be in ab- Y solute axial alignment since proper driving connection may be had.
Secured to the trunnion 37 of the bracket 39 is another connection, a slight misalignment will` be amply compensated for.
It is to be understood that if desired, certain pumps may be eliminated when not needed without in anywise interfering with the general asbe effectively used for connecting the ends of the arms 35 and 36 and the trunnions 37 and 38.
To avoid possible injury to the ment transversely thereof, a spindle journaled in the carriage, means for rotating said spindle including a prime mover, a countershaft, flexible power transmission means between the prime mover and countershaft, flexible transmission The adjacent inner ends 81 of the,
shaft and spindle from one another to tension the flexible transmission means therebetween, and means for locking the plate in adjusted positions in the direction of extent of the flexible transmission means between the prime mover and countershaft to tension said transmission means.
2. In a machine of the class described the combination of a bedor support, a grinding wheel carriage carried thereby and movable transversely thereof, a spindle journaled in said carriage, means for actuating the carriage relative to the bed, a plate carried by the bed, a bracket supported by the plate, a trunnion projecting from one side of the plate, a trunnion projecting from the other side of the bracket, a bearing sleeve having arms extending therefrom and journaled for oscillating movement about the trunnions, a countershaft in said bearing sleeve, flexible transmission means between the countershaft and spindle, and means pivotally'mou'nted at opposite ends concentrically with the axis of the spindle and countershaft for definitely spacing the said, axes of the spindle and countershaft from one another to' tension the flexible transmission means during the transverse adjustment of the grinding wheel carriage.
3. In a machine of the class described the combination of a bed or support, a grinding wheel carriage carried thereby and movable transversely thereof, a spindle journaled in said carriage, means for actuating the carriage relative to the bed, a plate carried by the bed, a bracket supported by the plate, a trunnion projecting from one side of the plate, a trunnion projecting from the other side of the bracket, a bearing sleeve having arms extending therefrom and journaled for oscillating countershaft in said bearing sleeve, flexible transmission means between the countershaft and spindle, means definitely spacing the axes of the spindle and countershaft from one another to tension the flexible transmissionA means during the transverse adjustament of the grinding wheel carriage, a prime mover, flexible transmission means between the prime mover and countershaft, and means for adjusting and clamping the plate and bracket in the direction of extent of the transmission means between the prime mover and countershaft for tensioning said transmission means.

In a machine of the class described the combination of a bed or support, a grinding wheel carriage carried thereby and movable transversely thereof, a spindle journaled in said carriage, means for actuating the carriage relative to the bed, a plate carried by the bed, a bracket supported by the plate, a trunnion projecting from one side of the plate, a trunnion projecting from the other side of the bracket, a bearing sleeve having arms extending therefrom and journaled for oscillating movement about the trunnions, a countershaft in said bearing sleeve, flexible transmission means between the countershaft and spindle, means definitely spacing the axes of the spindle and countershaft from one another transmission means during the transverse adjustment of the grinding wheel carriage', a fluid pump mechanism including a pump shaft-carried by the bracket, and transthe countershaft and latter from the pump shaft for driving the former.

In a machine of the class described the combination of a bed or support, a grinding wheel carriage carried thereby and movable transversely thereof, a spindle journaled in said carriage, means for actuating the carriage relative to the bed, a plate carried by the bed, a bracket supported by the plate, a trunnion projecting from one side of the' plate, a trunnion projecting from the other side of the bracket, a bearing sleeve having arms extending therefrom and journaled for oscillating movement about the trunnions, a countershaft in said bearing sleeve, flexible transmission means between the countershaft and spindle, means definitely spacing the axes of the spindle and countershaft from one another to tension the flexible transmission means during the transverse adjustment of the-grinding wheel carriage, a fluid pump mechanism including a pump shaft carried by the bracket, transmission means between the' countershaft and pump shaft for driving the latter from the former, a second pump adapted to be secured to the bracket or plate including a rotatable shaft, and means for coupling the rotatable shaft with the pump shaft.

In a device of the class described the combination of a bed, a grinding wheel carriage carried thereby and shiftable relative thereto, a spindle journaled in the carriage, means for actuating the carriage transversely of the bed, a bearing sleeve, a countershaft journaled in said sleeve, means pivotally mounting the sleeve on the'bed, flexible transmission means between the countershaft and spindle, a trunnion formed on the carv .of the plates for denitely spacing the axes of the spindle and floating countershaft from one another to tension the flexible transmission means therebetween during the transverse adjustment of the grinding wheel carriage.
