5 Claims. (01. 98-114) This invention relates to a furnace outlet box and register. 
 In hot air furnaces, the pipes which carry the heated air from the furnace casing, in practice, extend laterally beneath the floor toadjacent vertical walls of a room which is to be heated and each is connected at its end to a box which extends upwardly through the floor and has a register closing either its upper end or an' open vertical side thereof, depending upon whether it is a floor register or a wall register, and with the register there is usually a pivotally mounted damper or louver whereby the openings through the register may be opened or closed to a greater or less degree and in this way govern the amount of heated air which passes into a room. 
 The present invention is directed to a very practical and economical construction of furnace'outlet box and register to be associated with the outer end of a warm air pipe from a furnace, to carry the heated air from said pipe to V anddeliver it into a room. One primary object and purpose of the present invention is to build the outlet box of two members identical in construction and one of which may be inverted with respect to the other, whereby the open ends of two members can be telescope'd together, providing a continuous box conduit for the warm air to carry the same upwardly from the end of the furnace pipe; 
 Another object of the invention is to provide each of said members at one end and at a side thereof with an opening so that the lower member may receive the end of the furnace pipe in said opening and the upper member be applied with a register of a pleasing and attractive de-' sign at said opening which will appear in the room to which the heated air is to be delivered. A still further object of the invention is to construct the outlet box of parts which can be very quickly and easily assembled at the installation, said parts being manufactured and shipped separately and so constructed that they may be nested so as to reduce the space required for shipment. Many other objects and purposes than those stated toegther with novel construction for attaining the same, all of which result in great economy of production and in. a design which is particularly adapted for large quantity production, will appear upon understanding of the invention, had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which, Fig. 1 is a fragmentary vertical section illustrating the manner in which the outlet box and register of my invention is installed in connection with the end of a furnace pipe.- 7 1 Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevation of the upper register portion of the unit. 
 Fig. 3 is 'a horizontal section on the plane of line  3--3 of Fig. 1. 
 Fig. 4 illustrates in perspective the various parts or elements which are used to provide one of the members of the construction, the parts being shown in disassembled relation and, in addition, the register to be used with the upper member of the assembly is shown. 
 Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, substantially on the plane of line  5--5 of Fig. 2, and 
 Fig. 6 is a vertical section illustrating the manner in which parts of the outlet box construction may be nested'together for economy of space. 
 Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawings. 
 In the-construction for the outlet box, each of the upper and lower parts of the outlet box includes a back member of thin-sheet metal having a vertical back 1, from which sides  2 are bent forwardly at right angles, and which at their front edges are formed with return bent flanges  3 extending from the lower edges of the sides  2 nearlyto their upper edges. This back member is completed by atop member of sheet metal pressed into the form shown and havinga back 4 curved and forwardly extended. Rounded and curved side and top portions  5 extend forwardly from the back  4, the lower edges of the back  4 and of the sides  5 embracing the upper por tions of the back 1 and sides  2 of the first de-- scribed member and being secured thereto. 
 The back member described is closed at its front lower portion by a front member comprising a vertical plate  6 with short sides 'I bent rearward- 1y therefrom which are rebent upon themselves to make flanges  8, permitting the plate  6 to be secured in place by slidably interlocking the  flanges    3 and 8 together. The upper end of the front  6 is cut away to provide a concaved recess and the metal is turned outwardly making a for wardly extending arc-shaped flange  9, whereby when the front  6 has been inserted in place there is provided at the up er end of the assembled box element a front circular opening, the lower portionof which is bounded by the flange  9. 
 Two of these box members may be connected together as shown in Fig. 1, the upper one being positioned with the front opening at its upper end and the lower one being inverted with the opening at its front side adjacent its lower end. The two members may be telescopically received one within the other and, as shown in Fig. 1, the inner end of the lower member telescopically enters the open lower end of the upper member, the lower member being crimped, as indicated at 10, to reduce its size sufficiently for telescoping. 
 When thus positioned, the opening at the lower front portion of the lower member may have the free end of a furnace pipe 11 inserted therein (see Fig. 1). The outlet box extends vertically from the pipe and the upper member is set back into a vertical wall  12 of a room, passing through an opening in the floor  13 between the room and the basement in which the furnace is installed, and the upper open end of the upper section of the outlet box is positioned so as to direct warm air, which passes upwardly through the outlet box, into the room. 
 When the construction is installed in a house and the outlet box has been attached to the furnace pipe, as shown in Fig. 1, with the outlet box vertically positioned and comprising the two iden-- tical members telescopically connected together, within the room and at the front of the upper member or section of the outlet box a sheet metal member is positioned having a vertical front plate  14 with sides  15 turned to the rear therefrom, the upper portions of which are formed as indicated at 15a (Fig. 4). The upper portion of the front  14 is cut away to provide a concaved recess around which an outwardly extending are shaped flange  16 is bent from the front  14. This member is placed against the front  6 of the upper section of the outlet box and moved backwardly thereagainst, bringing the curved flange  16 directly below the curved flange  9 of the member  6 as shown in Fig. 1. 
 One side  15 is longitudinally slotted, as at 17, for the passage of a damper or louver rod  18 which extends across between'the sides  2 of the first described member of the construction and has a sheet metal damper or louver  19 thereon within the upper section of the outlet box, whereby on turning the handle at the outer end of the rod  18, said damper may be moved to wholly or partly close the vertical'passage for the air through said outlet box. 
 A ring  20 pressed and formed into the shape best shown in cross section in Fig. 1, at its lower portion, passes around the flange  16 and covers the edges of said flange and the flange  9, and at its upper portion is located around the upper circular opening in the upper section of the outlet box. At its upper part it has a rearwardly extending apron  21 of sufiicient length to reach to the face of the wall  12, covering and surrounding the upper part  5 of the upper member'of the outlet box where the same extends forwardly beyond the inner face of the wall  12. This ring  22 is also formed with two ears  22 which lie fiat against the outer side of the plate  14. Openings through the ears, said plate  14 and through the front plate  6, permit the passage of rods  23, screw threaded at their inner ends, to have a threaded engagement with angle clips  24 permanently secured at the inner sides of the parts  2. The heads at the outer ends of the rods  24 are adapted to have a screw driver engage therewith to operate the rods and tightly draw the parts together. The opening, which is surrounded by the sheet metal ring  20, is adapted to receive a grille  26 stamped from sheet metal and of any suitable design, said grille having openings therethrough for the passage of air. This grille is pressed or snapped into place in the ring  20 as shown in Fig. 1. 
 In installing the apparatus wherever needed, suitable asbestos packing  27 is used, as between the part  21 and the part  5 as shown in Fig. 1, and between the sides  15 and the sides  2, as shown in Fig. 5, to preclude the escape of hot air except through the grille. 
 The construction described is of a very prac tical, economical, quantity production type. The two sections if the outlet box are made of parts having identical shape and form and may be constructed with the same dies. The nesting of a number of the largest elements of construction in the box, including the back 1, sides  2 and the back  4 and sides and top  5 is illustrated in Fig. 6, while of course the member which is comprised of the   parts      14, 15 and 16 may nest together, and the other parts are of a comparatively flat structure taking little space for shipment. The construction of outlet box may be completely assembled at the place where a furnace is to be installed. The register portion of the construction is much more economical to produce than the separate registers now commonly used in conjunction with furnace outlet boxes. 
 The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope. 
I claim: i 
 1. In a device of the class described, a lower box member having one of its sides cut away to form an'opening, an upper box member of substantially the same construction, except that said lower box member has crimped opposedsides whereby telescopic engagement may be had between the two box members, a top member extending over the upper box member whereby the air which passes upwardly therethrough is diverted laterally, a front member positioned adjacent that side of the upper box member through which the warm air issues, a grille extending over the opening through which the warm air issues, and means. extending through said grille, front member and the box member whereby the several parts are held in assembled relationship. 
 2. A furnace outlet box consisting of a box-like member having an open lower end throughwhich the warm air enters and an open upper end and also having one of its sides cut away to form a semi-circular opening, a top member extending over the upper open end of the box member and having one side cut away, said cut away portions forming an opening, a front member extending upwardly adjacent the box member and extend ing around the lower edge of said opening, a ring extending around the opening in front of said front member and extending over the said top member and a grille mounted in said ring. 
 3. A furnace outlet box consisting of a boxlike member having an open lower end through which the warm air enters and an open upper end and also having one of its sides cut away to form an opening, a top member extending over the upper open end of the box member, a front member extending upwardly adjacent the box member'and extending partly around the opening, a ring extending around the opening in front of said front member and fastening means for maintaining said ring and said front member in place. 
 4. In combination with a substantially horizontal cylindrical furnace pipe adapted to deliver warm air, a vertical box member having a semi-circular portion at one side cut away whereby said member may be fitted downwardly against said furnace pipe in revoluble relationship therewhich the warm air enters and an open upper v end and also having one of its sides cut away to form an opening, a top member extending over the upper open end of the box member, a front member extending upwardly adjacent the box member and extending to the said opening, a ring member located in front of said front member, angle clips fastened interiorly of said box-like member, and rods-extending from said ring member through said front member into said angle clips whereby said ring member and said front member are held in place. t
