2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combination cesspool, rain conductor and catch basin and is an improvement on the type of plumbing fixture shown in Patent No. 890,276 to Harnett dated June 9, 1908.
The type of device disclosed in the foregoing patent has the advantage that it avoids the necessity of taking up two portions of the yard to locate the cesspool and rain spout connection.
However, it has the disadvantage that it is readily clogged up by slag and pitch which is carried into the device by surface and rain waters. As is well-known, the summer heat causes the pitch and tar from the roofing materials to fuse and 5" flow down both the inside and outside of the rainspout and into the cesspool. After it passes through the apertures of the cover, the tar or pitch solidifies and clogs up the plumbing system, often necessitating the digging up of the cesspool.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a plumbing fixture of the general type above referred to which cannot be clogged up by solid materials carried into the fixture by the water draining thereinto.
Another object is to provide means in such a device for catching or trapping all the solid material which would have a tendency to clog the system.
Another object is to provide means in such a device for readily removing trapped solids and obviating the necessity of digging up the fixture to clear the system of clogging materials.
In its broadest aspect, the device of the invention consists of a relatively short vertical section '35 of pipe having a closed or blind lower end to serve as a trap for solids carried into the fixture and also having an outlet in such position that it carries off the overfiow from the blind end of the pipe minus the solids.
In a more specific aspect, the device is provided with a removable cover to facilitate access to and removal of the entrapped solids.
The inventive'concept involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one
of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:-
Figure l is a plan view of the device when used as a combined cesspool, rain conductor and catch basin;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device when used merely as a rain conductor and catch basin;
Figure 3 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a vertical cross-section taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings, particularly Figure 3 thereof, it will be noted that the reference numeral 1 denotes a relatively short section of pipe having the bell-shaped upper end 2, the lower closed or blind end 3 and the two side apertures 4 and 5. Connected for communication with the pipe 1 at the apertures 4 and 5 are the two elbows or curved sections of pipes 6 and 7, the section 6 extending upwardly and the section 7 extending downwardly. The upper end of the elbow 6 is provided with the bell-shaped portion 8 for receiving the lower end of the conventional form of rainspout (not shown). The lower end 9 of the elbow '7 is adapted for connection to a sewer or pipe leading to the sewer.
The bell-shaped portion 2 of the pipe 1 is provided at its upper end with the circumferential flange 10 which flange is provided at diametrically opposite points with the ears or horizontal lugs 11 and 12. The bell-shaped portion 2 is adapted to receive either the perforated cover 13, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, or the imperforate cover plate or lid 14, as shown in 0 Figures 2 and 4. Either element may be fitted over the bell-shaped portion 2 and detachably secured by means of the screws 15 to the ears or lugs 11 and 12 of the circumferential flange.
The cover 13 is shown as being of substantially g5 rectangular form and has the vertical peripheral flange 16 provided with the bend 17 to accommodate the bell-shaped portion 8 of the pipe 6. The cover 13 is further provided with the central saucer-shaped perforated portion or basin 18 0 wihch fits into the bell-shaped portion 2 of the pipe 1.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be clear that rain water is conducted to the pipe 1 by means of the elbow 6 and that surface waters pass into the same pipe (pipe 1) through the apertures of the cover 13. Refuse and other relatively large solids are caught by the basin 18. Small pieces of slag, pitch, etc. pass through the apertures but due to gravity fall directly into the closed or blind end 3 of the pipe. The same is true of any solids which may be carried along by the rain water in the elbow 6. As the water passing into the pipe 1 reaches the height of the aperture 5, it overflows into the pipe or elbow '7 and is carried to the sewer. Obviously, the solids except minute suspended particles, are retained in the closed end of the pipe 1 and may be removed periodically through the upper end of the pipe. The detachable connection of the cover 13 and the shortness of the pipe 1 facilitate the removal of the solids. If it is desired to use the device only as a rain conductor, the imperforate cover 14 may be substituted for the basin 13.
The foregoing includesthe essential and distinctive thought of the invention, but it will, of course, be understood that the same may be modified in various ways or combined with various other details without effecting the peculiar results obtained or departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. As an article of manufacture, a combined cesspool, rain conductor and catcnbasin comprising a vertical section of pipe having a perforated upper end for the reception of surface waters and a closed or blind lower end to serve as a trap or catch basin for the solids carried by the waters passing through said pipe, said pipe being also provided intermediate its ends with an inlet for rain Water and an outlet for carrying off the overflow from the closed or blind end of said pipe, minus the solids retained by the closed or blind end of said pipe.
2. As an article or" manufacture, a combined cesspool, rain conductor and catchbasin, comprising a vertical section of pipe having an open upper end and a closed or blind lower end, a detachable perforated cover fitted upon the open upper end of said pipe to allow the passage of surface waters into said pipe, an inlet for rain water disposed adjacent the upper end of said pipe, and an outlet disposed intermediate said inlet and the closed or blind end of said pipe, said closed or blind end serving as a catchbasin or trap for solids carried by the waters passing through said pipe and said outlet serving to carry off the overflow from the closed or blind end of said pipe, minus the solids retained by the closed or blind end of said pipe.
