^ which can be installed near a mirror in a wall of a building, Pullmancar or elsewhere where a blade sharpening deviceis likely to be employed; to provide a blade sharpening device which can be disassembled for the insertion of a blade therein merely by removing ajcover from one end thereof and without the necessity of loosening screws or other fastening devicesmow frequently employed in such structures; f to provide means for adjusting the pressure with'. which the blade sharpening means employed ftherein is Abrought to bear upon the cutting edgeo'redges of a blade; and otherwise to provide efhcient, inexpensive and practical device for sharpening blades for razors or other similar devices.
The embodiment of the invention herein illustrated 'comprisesl generally a cylindrical casing having an open end and in which a pair of rotatable sharpening rolls are mounted on a removable frame. The sharpening rolls are provided with 30 gears by which they are rotated upon their own axis when the rollfsupporting frame is rotated by a gear secured togthe casing. The open end of the casing also is provided with a removable cover in which is journaled one end of a shaft having a bldremovably secured to the middle portion thereof, while the opposite end thereof is journaled in an opening in the opposite end of the casing. Such opposite end is removable from the opening when the cover is removed from the 4o casing.
When the shaft is rotated by an arm secured thereto the edges of the blade engage and rotate the aforesaid rolls and frame within the cylindrical casing and as a consequence of such rotation the rolls are rotated relative to the blade edges by the aforesaid gears. To sharpen opposite edges of the blade the roll supporting frame is rotated alternately in opposite directions by the manipu- -v lation of the aforesaid shaft operating arm.

Figure 6 is a fragmentary View illustrating a blade holder structure embraced in the sharpening device as it might appear between the arrows 6-6 in Figure 1.
Referring particularly to Figure 1 the invention embraces a cylindrical casing 1G having an end l1 projecting a short distance inwardly thereof and there terminating in a planular pressure or braking ring 12. Removably disposed within the casing 10 is a rotatable frame or cage 13 which con-r sists of an inner annular ring 14 and an outer annular ring 16 between which a pair of diametrically opposed and arcuate spacing members 17 and 18 are secured by rivets 19.
The opening in the center of the annular member 16 is large enough to admit any blade with which the sharpening device is designed to be employed while the annular member 14 has a much smaller opening therein and is abutted on one surface by the adjacent surface of the pressure ring 12.
Sharpening rolls 21 and 22 have pins 23 projecting therefrom which are rotatably mounted in aligned openings formed in the annular members 14 and 16. As illustrated, the rolls 21 and 22 consist of cylinders 24 on which the leather strips 26 are spirally wound; athough it is to be understood that the rolls may be constructed of any material and in any manner suitable for blade sharpening purposes.
Washers 27 are employed for retaining the rolls 21 in properly spaced relation to the annular member 16 while at the opposite end of the rolls the pins 23 are splined as indicated at 28 to prevent their rotation relative to the rolls. On such pins immediately adjacent the ends of the rolls, are rigidly mounted, planetary gears 29 both of which mesh with a centrally disposed gear 31. Between the gears 29 and 31 and the annular member 14 are slightly compressible fibrous or rubber washers which retain all of the movable elements of the frame 13 in such relation as to prevent undesirable rattling noises.
The gear 31 terminates in a sleeve or bearing sure ring l2 and therebeyond is threaded for the reception of a nut 33. It is apparent that tightening the nut 33 will cause the gear 31 to press together to a variable degree the annular ring 1.4 and the pressure ring 12 thus forming a friction brake for opposing to a variable extent the rota-V tional movement of the frame 13.

member 38 in which a central portion of a cylinder end closure or cover 39 issecured, Rigidly mounted on the reduced end 36 of the shaft 34 beyond the bearing 38 is an arm or handle 41 having a pin 42 projecting outwardly from the opposite end thereof on which a bushing portion 43 of a rotatable handle 44 is secured.
The cover 39 has an annular flange 46 thereon which is adapted to fit tightly but removably around the open end of the cylindrical casing 10.
A middle portion of the shaft 34 has a recess formed longitudinally thereof on which a blade supporting member 47 of a blade holder 45 is rigidly secured. Projecting through the member 4'7 adjacent the opposite ends thereof are pins 48 on the outer ends of which is slidably disposed an arcuate and removable blade securing member 51. One end of the supporting member 47 has a pair of outwardly projecting lugs 52 thereon which are adapted to be bent around and to tightly clamp thereto the adjacent edges of the blade securing member 51. Likewise at the opposite end of the blade securing member 51 is formed a pair of similarly outwardly projecting lugs 53 which are bent around the adjacent edges of the plate 47 for the same purpose. The openings in the blade securing member 51 in which the pins 48 are received are so elongated as to permit the securing member to be moved longitudinally relative to the supporting member 4'7 into such position that the lugs 52 and 53 will permit the complete separation of the two members.
The blade supporting member 47, the blade securing member 51 and the pins 48 are so constructed as to clamp therebetween a blade 54 having sharpened opposite edges and openings therebetween throughwhich the pins project; although it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to blades of this particular character but by proper structural nvariation the sharpening devicev may be rendered applicable for employment with various other types of blades.
In operating the sharpening device it is only necessary to pull off the cap or cover 39 thus removing the shaft 34 and the blade holding members thereon entirely from within the casing 10. After inserting a blade between the blade supports as hereinbefore described and after replacing the cap and shaft in operative relation to the cylinder 10 the blade upon the shaft may be sharpened by rotating the handle 44 in first one direction and then another. Such rotation of the handle will cause the edges of the blades to' properly engage opposite sides of the rollers 21 and 22 and to rotate the frame 13 in the same direction. This rotation of the frame will rotate the planetary gears 29 around the stationary gear 31 in which eventthe rolls-2l and. 2,2 willlrotate away from the edgesof theblade and-will sharpen the edges of the latter in so doing.
If it appears that the rotating rolls 21 and 22 are not being pressed tightly enough against the edges of the blades or are being pressed too tightly -thereagainst such difficulty may be corrected to the satisfaction of, the operator merely by lproperly.Amaiiipulating`the nut 33.
