Description

y 29, 1934- J. w. BEIGER TABLE TOP CONSTRUCTION Filed Jan. 3, 1933 INVENTIOR John W, Ga/ gar BY m ATTORNEYJ Patented May 29, 1934 iJNi'lED STATES TABLE T691 CONSTRUCTION John W. Beiger, Ludington, Mich, assignor to The Carrom Company, Ludington, Mich.
Application January 3,
4 Claims.
The objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a table top construction in which a flexible cover is stretched over a top panel which fits within a frame so as to hold said flexible cover in place and in which the joint between the flexible cover and the frame is completely closed to prevent the collection of dust and the like.
Second, to provide such a table top construction in which the top panel and frame are so constructed that they wedge together to clamp the flexible cover in position on the top panel.
Third, to provide such a construction in which the above objects are accomplished with a few simple parts fastened together by very simple operations.
Other objects and advantages of construction and operation will appear from the description to follow. A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view in section through a table top embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of the frame and the table top panel showing my construction.
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of a table top embodying my invention.
, Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing the parts during the course of fitting them together.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the panel and frame in position for the insertion of a retainer strip.
The parts will be identified by their numerals of reference which are the same in all the views.
1 is a table top panel which may be of wood, ply wood, press wood, sheet metal, or any other desired material. 2 is a frame here shown of mitered corner construction. 3 is a flexible table top cover of leatherette or fabric or any suitable material. The inner edge of the frame 2 has an inwardly projecting, downwardly facing, mitered portion 4 and a groove 5 extending into the frame below the mitered portion and so positioned that a retaining strip inserted therein and projecting therefrom will engage the table top panel when. it is in position, as will be later described. The bottom opening of the frame is of a size to receive the table top panel 1 which has a beveled edge 6 adapted to engage or mate with the beveled portion 4 of the frame to hold the top of the table panel substantially flush with the top of the frame.
The flexible cover 3 extends over the top of the 1933, Serial No. 649,925
panel 1 and the bevel edge 6 thereof and has an overhanging portion 7 adapted to fit within the groove 5, as shown in Fig. 2. It is not essential that the portion 7 extend into the groove 5, although such a construction holds the flexible cover 3 very firmly in position. The table top panel is very easily installed. It may be supported on a support such as shown at 8 and the flexible covering 3 may be placed over the panel and the frame 4 then laid over the entire construction, as is shown in Fig. 5. This operation may be reversed. The action of the beveled faces 4 and 6 tend to stretch the flexible cover 3 over the entire table top panel to make a very smooth construction and the faces of the bevels hold the cover 3 firmly in place. Retainer strips 9 are in-- serted in the grooves 5 and engage the portion 7 of the flexible cover 3 and extend from the groove and engage the bottom of the top panel 1 to hold it wedged firmly in place. The strips 9 here wedge the panel into place although they may be fitted exactly.
If desired, the strips 9 may be held in place with glue, but I have found that a nail such as 10 driven through the frame 2, the retainer strip 9, and the portion '7 of the flexible cover 3, makes a very superior construction. It will be understood that glue may be applied to the beveled faces and to the panel if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a table top construction, a top panel having a beveled edge, a frame adapted to receive said panel and having an inwardly-extending downwardly-facing bevel to engage said beveled edge and having a groove adapted to receive a retaining strip to hold said panel in position, a flexible top cover extending over said panel and said beveled edge and into said groove, a retainer strip adapted to fit in said groove and to engage and hold said panel in position and to engage said cover, whereby said cover is clamped in position, and a nail through said frame and said retainer strip.
2. In a table top construction, a top panel having a beveled edge, a frame adapted to receive said panel and having an inwardly-extending downwardly-facing bevel to engage said beveled edge and having a. groove adapted to receive a retaining strip to hold said panel in position, a flexible top cover extending over said panel and said beveled edge and into said groove, and a retainer strip adapted to fit in said groove and to engage and hold said panel in position and to engage said cover, whereby said cover is clamped in position.
3. In a table top construction, a top panel having a beveled edge, a frame adapted to receive said panel and having an inwardly-extending downwardly-facing bevel to engage said beveled edge and having a groove adapted to receive a retaining strip to hold said panel in position, a flexible top cover extending over said panel and said beveled edge, a retainer strip adapted tofit in said groove and to engage and hold said panel in position, whereby said cover is clamped in position, and a nail through said frame and said retainer strip.
4. In a table top construction, a top panel having a beveled edge, a frame adapted to receive said panel and having an inwardly-extending downwardly-facing bevel to engage said beveled edge and having a groove adapted to receive a retaining strip to hold said panel in position, a flexible top cover extending over said panel and said beveled edge, and a retainer strip adapted to fit in said groove and to engage and hold said panel in position, whereby said cover is clamped in position.
