My invention relates to braiding machines, and particularly to improved stop mechanism therefor whereby the driving of the carriers is automatically discontinued upon accidental breakage of any of the carrier threads, as fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and clearly defined in the subjoined claims.
Fig. 1 is a partial plan view of a known type of braiding machine having my invention applied thereto in preferred form.
Fig. 2 is a corresponding partial elevation, the driving clutch indicated in Fig. 1 being omitted.
Fig. 3 is a much enlarged detail view of certain of the parts; the portion of the stop member lever which is provided with a detent projection being otherwise merely indicated in dotted lines so as to clearly show the cooperating parts below it. v
The known braiding machine construction indicated comprises series of thread carriers a and b respectively, which are reversely traversed in circular courses so as to requiredly pass the threads of one series over and under those of the as usual with a suitable thread-supported stop device as sufiiciently indicated at c, which is adapted to drop into stopping position in case of breakage of its supporting thread. The drive riers a, is provided as indicated with a brake drum 6 having a brake band '7, and is driven in known manner by a main drive'shaft 8 mounted in bearings 9. As particularly illustrated this shaft 8 is provided with a clutch wheel 10, to a movable part 11 of which the main stop member 12 of my improved stop mechanism is secured so as to render the clutch operative or inoperative as desired.
Suitably secured to each of a spaced series of vertically mounted supporting rods 15 on the machine, are stop contact devices or fingers 16, 1'7 arranged below the planes of travel of the main portions of the respective revolving thread carjriers a and b, but in the paths of the dropped stop device of any carrier, so that any such stop device will, upon breakage of its supporting thread, promptly strike one or the other of such stop-control fingers. Such contact will turn the corresponding supporting rod 15, and thereby actuate the main carrier-drive stop member 12, as hereinafter specifically described.
The stop member 12, as shown, is horizontally slidable in the bearing 9, so as to move attached fclutch part 11 into engaging or disengaging position; a spring being arranged as shown to normally press said part 11 into engaged position.
A lever for operatively engaging said stop member 12, is pivotally mounted upon the machine frame at 26, and is provided with an arm 27 which engages a collar 12 on the member 12; it being also provided with an extension 28 operatively connected to the brake band '7 above referred to.
This member-engaging lever 25 is retained in machine-operating position, by a depending detent projection 25 thereon, which projection is engaged by the off-set end 30 of an arm 30'" on a pivotally mounted detent device 30, and it is released so as to permit clutch-disengaging movement of the stop member 12 upon breaking of a thread and resulting movement of a latch lever 32 by turning of any of the stop contact fingers 16, 17; as particularly described later.
The latch lever 32, which is intermediately pivoted to the frame at 33, is provided at one end with a latch arm 34 having a right-angular portion 35 which engages the notched edge 30 of a second detent-device arm 30. The detent-releasing swing of the latch lever 32 is effected as shown by means of a cam 36 on one or more of the stop contact rods 15,-the illustration showing such a cam operative upon each end of the latch lever 32, with the rods not so provided having a crank arm 3'7 and link connection 38.
The pivotally mounted detent device 30 is provided, as previously stated, with the off-set arm 30 arranged in the plane of the depending lever projection 25 (Figs. 2 and 3), and. with a second arm 30 having a notched edge 30 and arranged in the plane of the engaging portion 35 of latch lever 32. To provide for conveniently resetting the parts to operating position after they have been displaced by breakage of a thread and resulting stoppage of the machine, a cam-arm 30 is also provided on the pivoted detent device 30, in the same plane as arm 30, so as to be engaged by the depending lever projection 25 and enable turning of the device 30 by resetting movement of the lever, and thereby cause reengagement of the arms 30 and 30 with the depending projection of member-engaging lever 25 and with the up-turned portion 35 of latch lever 32 respectively, as shown in Fig. 3. It will be readily understood that the detent-device spring 30 cooperates in thus normally resetting the parts; and also in releasing the lever 25 when the latchlever 32 is moved to permit a change of engagemovement of the latch arm 34, 35 of latch lever 32, so as to be swung by its spring 30 out of engagement with the detent projection 25*, thereby permitting clutch-release movement of the member 12 by spring 19 to stop the machine. Coincident with this stop-drive action, the lever 25 applies the brake band '7; and the resetting of the parts to normal drive position is thereafter conveniently effected by action of the handled member engaging lever 25 upon the detent device 30. It will be readily understood that the preferred application of my invention thus specifically set forth, may be modified within the invention as defined in the claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a braiding machine, revolvable thread carriers having thread-supported stop devices, driving mechanism for said carriers, a stop member for the latter, a member-engaging lever, a latch lever operative upon breakage of a thread, and a detent device for said member-engaging lever lockingly engaged by said latch lever.
2. In a braiding machine, revolvable thread carriers having thread-supported stop devices, driving mechanism for said carriers, a stop member for the latter, a member engaging lever having a detent projection, a latch lever operative upon breakage of a thread, and a pivoted detent device having an arm engageable with said lever detent projection, an arm engaged by said latch lever, and a cam arm adapted to engage said lever detent projection with its respective arm by reverse movement of said member-engaging lever.
3. In a braiding machine, revolvable thread carriers having thread-supported stop devices, driving mechanism for said carriers, a stop mechanism for the latter including an operative clutch and a brake, a lever for jointly operating said clutch and brake having a detent projection, a latch lever operative upon breakage of a, thread, and a pivoted detent device having an arm engaged by said latch lever, an arm engageable with said operating lever projection, and a cam arm adapted to engage said lever projection with its respective detent arm by movement of said lever to operatively engage said clutch and free said brake.
4. In a braiding machine having movable thread carriers provided with thread controlled stop devices, driving mechanism for said carriers and .a stop member for the latter, means operative to control said stop member, a latch lever, and double acting detent means interposed between the latch lever and the operating means and having positive locking engagement therewith in relative opposite directions.
5. In a braiding machine having movable thread carriers provided with thread controlled stop devices, driving mechanism for said carriers and a stop member for the latter, an operating lever engaging said stop member, a latch lever, a detent interposed between the latch lever and the operating lever having notches for engaging and positively locking both levers in relative-ope posite directions and in their operating positions, said latch lever being operative .upon breakage of a thread to unlock the detent andthereby unlock the operating lever to cause thestopping of the machine; I
