This invention relates to pressing machines as garment and laundry pressing machines andv The invention consists in the novel A:feature and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation partly in section of a machine embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof partly in section.
This pressing machine comprises generally, a frame, 'a buck or stationary pressing element mounted on the frame in horizontal position, a head movable toward and from the buck, means for actuating the head comprising a vertically movable link, connections between the link and the head and a horizontally movable actuator supported by the frame at the portion thereof directly beneath the buck, a link connecting the actuator and the former link, the two links being arranged at an angle to each other, and a stationary cam carried by the frame and arranged at an angle to both links, one of the links having a follower movable along the cam.
1 designates the frame which includes a suitable table and a pedestal 2 supporting the table. A buck 3 is mounted upon a suitable bracket or goose neck 4 which is mounted upon the upper side of the frame. A head 5 is movable toward and from the buck. The portion of the frame directly beneath the buck 3, or its supporting bracket 4 is formed with a recess 6 in which a portion of the actuating mechanism is located above the plane of the top of the table 1.
The head 5 is here shown as carried by a yoke or lever 7 which is pivoted at 8 between its ends to a standard 9 rising from the pressing machine frame, this lever 7 extending forwardly and rearwardly, and the standard 9 being located in the rear of the buck. The standard 9 is in the form o1 a channel in cross section, the open side of the channel facing rearwardly.
The reciprocating actuator is a piston havin a rod 10, the piston being movable in the cylinder 11 which is arranged in horizontal position in the recess 6 of the frame. The connections between the actuator 10 and the head 5, in addition to the lever 7, include a vertically movable 192s, serial No. 248,256
(ci. ss-9) link 12 connected to the rear arm of the lever 7 and a link 13 connected tothe actuator 10 and to the link 12, the link 13 being movable in a general horizontal direction and being in effect a connecting rod. This link 13 is pivoted at 14 00 to the link 12, and at 15 to the rod 10 or to a cross head 16 movable in the recess 6 and vguided by the bottom and side Walls thereof.
17 is a stationary cam formed with a cam slot 18 for receiving a follower provided on one of 05 the links 12 or 13, the follower being here shown as a roller 19 provided on the pivot 14 which connects the links 12 and 13 together.
The cam slot 18 extends at an angle to both links and has an upwardly and rearwardly inclined lower portion and a top portion extending more nearly horizontally but having a slight lift.
The cam 17 is preferably formed double or bifurcated and there are rollers or followers 19 on each end of the pivot 14, these rollers being movable in the slots 18 of the double cam 17. The piston is single acting and the press is opened by countersprings 20 located in the recess 6 on opposite sides of the cylinder 11. These springs 20 are connected to the rear arm of the lever 7 39 by cables 21 which are connected-at like ends to the springs 20 and at their other ends to the rear arm of the lever 7, the cables passing over pulleys 22. The cam 17 and the link 12 are located in the channel of the standard 9.
The ilow of motive uid, as ai'r, to and from the cylinder 11 is controlled by suitable valve mechanism located in acasing 23. The'operation of the valve mechanism for causing the air to flow to the cylinder is governed by a push button 24, and for exhausting the airfrom the cylinder by a manual or lever 25. The control of air to and from the cylinder and the means rfor accomplishing itl forms no part of this invention. I
The link 12 is composed of two sections and the section 26 which is connected to the lever 7 is -adjustable enclwise relatively to the lever 12 for the purpose of regulating the pressure and the initial position of the head. As here shown, the section 26 is screw threaded and threads into a pivoted nut 27 provided on the lever 7 and is adjustable to thread different distances in the nut 27 by meansof a hand wheel 28. This lever 7 is bifurcated, as shown'in Fig- 105 ure 1, and the nut 27 is located between the bifurcations of the rear arm thereof.
In operation, when the head is open or in the dotted line position shown in Figure 2, the operator depresses the button 24, or otherwise opens of the cam, with respect to the motion trans-W mitting means; to vary the position of the movable pressing element for a. given position of the actuator.

In a garment or laundry pressing machine, in combiantion, a frame; cooperative pressing elements one of which is movable with respect to the other; an actuator; motion transmitting means between the actuator and the movable pressing element; a normally stationary cam connected with the frame for controlling the movement of the motion transmitting means; and means for adjusting the position of the cam with respect to the frame to change the position of the movable pressing element for a given position of the actuator.
9. A pressing machine including in combina.
tion, a frame; a buck mounted on the frame; a head movable toward and from the buck; means for actuating the head including a forwardly and rearwardly extending lever pivoted to the frame and carrying the head; a link connected at one end to the lever and depending therefrom; a cam arranged at an angle to said link and coacting with the other end thereof; meansfor adjusting the position of the cam to change said angle; a forwardly and rearwardly extending reciprocating actuator; and connections between the actuator and the depending link, whereby the link when actuated coacts with the cam to close the 10. In a garment -or laundry pressing machine in combination a frame; cooperative pressing elements one of which is movable with respect to the other; an actuator; a lever on which the movablepressing element is carried; a first link connected to the head carrying lever; a second link connected to the actuator; means pivotally connecting said links; a cam connected with the frame; a cam follower connected with the links for guiding the pivotal connection; and means for adjusting the position of the cam with respect to the frame to change the position of the movable pressing element with respect to the position of the actuator.
11. In a garment and laundry pressing machine', the combination of a frame including a hollow base portion, a buck mounted on the base portion, a head movable toward and from the buck, means for actuating the head including a forwardly and rearwardly extending lever pivoted to the frame and carrying the'head at its front end, and actuating mechanism self contained with the base and comprising a horizontally movable member located in the hollow base portion, connections between said member and the rear arm of the head carrying lever including a horizontally movable part in the hollow baseportion, an upwardly extending part connected to the rear arm of the head carrying -lever and to the rear end of the horizontally movable part, and a cam carried by the base portion, and said connections having a follower coacting with the cam, said cam beingarranged to translate the horizontal movement of the horizontally movable part into an upright movement to the other of said parts.
