'i claims. (Cl. rzoein My invention relates to packaging containers such, for example, as are employed in merchandising biscuits, ccnfections, andthe like, drygoods, notions, and various merchandise.

The invention, which has among its objects the provision'of a carton with a self contained wrapper, will be best understood from the following description when read in the light of the accompanying'drawing of one embodiment of the invention, the scope of which latter will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the particular form ofy the invention illustrated by the drawing the carton comprises al box, preferably of cardboard, v.having what is ordinarily termed a bottom wall 1,'and, formed integrally therewith, laterally extending longitudinal walls 3 and 5, and end walls 'I and 9, the box as shown further comprising a lid 11 formed integrally with the longitudinal wall 3.

As shown, the cardboard'walls of the carton are covered by anA exterior sheet 1'1 of paper glued or. otherwise permanently secured to the outer surfaces o f the bottom, longitudinal, and end Walls of the carton, this sheet havingmarginal portions 19 bent about the upper edges .of said walls for convenience of manufacture and for securing a finished appearance of the parts.

As shown, that portion ofthe sheet 17 which is adjacent the edge 13 of the wall 3, about which edge the lid hinges, is extended to provide a portion 21 fcldable, about the carton so as to Y constitute a wrapper therefor. The wrapper may be folded, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4, from the 5 edge 13 over` the longitudinal wall 3, the bottom wall 1, and the longitudinal wall 5, which will expose the lid of the box, or, as indicated in Figs.

2 and 5, it may be folded from the edge 13'over the lid of the box and the longitudinal Wall 5 to cover said lid and secure it in closed position. 30 For securing the wrapper -in each of its folded positions above described the lateral wall 5 may be covered with adhesive material, or as an equivaient construction the adhesive material may be carried by those portions of the wrapper which contact, with the lateral wall 5. A layer bf adhesive material is .indicated at 25, and obviously it may be any sort of material winch becomes tacky upon the-application of moisture or heat,

or may be a pressure sensitive adhesive, that is to say, one which is permanently tacky.

If desired, the lid 11 of the box may be formed Y with a window 27 covered by a. pane of transparent material 29.s'uch'as transparent paper which will display part of the contents of the carton, and, if desired, said lid may carry appropriate printed matter as indicated in the drawing to denote the 'contents or the manufacturers name, etc., while the wrapper may bear appropriate printed matter as indicated inthe drawing t0 de- 80 note the retailer. When the wrapperi's in the position shown by Figs. l and 4, the window will be exposed and likewise the printed matter on the lid, while when the wrapper is in the position shown by Figs. 2 and 5, the window will be cov- 85 ered and protected and the printed matter on the wrapper will be exposed. As normally used. the wrapper will be folded to expose the lid of the carton when lthe package is in the hands of a retailer, and Vthe latter, when a sale is made to a .90 customer, will refold the wrapper to cover the lid, and secure it in folded position. Where a pressure sensitive adhesive is employed for securing the wrapper in folded position, ,obviously the adhering portion, ofthe wrapper may be peeled from the adhesive. To facilitate this, the wrapper is provided with a perforated line 33 permitf ting ready severing of that portion of the wrapper which is in excess of that necessary` to cover the lid and ,secure the wrapper. When other forms of adhesive are employed, conveniently the wrapper may be detached along the perforated line,. leaving the excess strip attached to the box, in which case the strip may be coated with adhesive `105 or the strip as originally folded may cover but a, portion of the side of the box leaving a portion of the adhesive layerexposed.

It will be understood that wide deviations may described without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. A device of the character described having, in combination, a carton, a sheet of Wrapping material carried by said carton adapted to be Wrapped about the same in one direction to cover a side thereof or in the opposite direction to expose said side, said carton carrying pressure-sensitive adhesive material positioned for securing the free end portion of said sheet when wrapped in either of said directions, whereby said free end portion of said sheet may be readily detached from said adhesive material when wrapped in one of said directions and then be wrapped in the opposite direction and again be secured in. wrapped relation by said adhesive material.

2. A device ofthe character described having, in combination, a carton, a sheet of wrapping material carried by said carton adapted to be Wrapped about the same in one direction to cover a side thereof or in the opposite direction to expose said side, said carton carrying pressure-sensitivev adhesive material positioned for securing said sheet when Wrapped in either of said directions, said sheet having a readily severableportion which may be peeled from said adhesive material when said sheet is wrapped to expose said side to permit said sheet readily to be wrapped in the opposite direction to cover said side and again be secured by said adhesive material.

3. A device of the character described having, in combination, a carton, a sheet of wrapping material carried by said carton at one edge thereof and adapted to be folded in one direction from said edge to overlie the three immediately consecutive sides of the carton or in the opposite direction to overlie the two immediately consecutive sides of the carton, that side of the carton Which is the most remote side from said edge in each instance of so folding the sheet having adhesive material for securing said sheet when folded, said sheet being formed for readily severing that portion thereof which is in escess of that necessary to cover said two sidesof said carton.

4. A device of the character described having, in combination, a carton having a hinged lid, a

sheet of Wrapping material carried by said carton and adapted to be folded about the saine in one direction to cover said lid or in the opposite direction to expose said lid, said carton carrying pressure-sensitive adhesive material for securing `said sheet when folded in either of said directions.

5. A device of the character described having, in combination, a carton having four sides providing an opening, a lid for said opening hinged at the edge of one of said sides adjacent said opening' a sheet of wrapping material carried by said carton and adapted to be folded about the same from said edge in one direction to cover said -lid or in the opposite direction to expose said lid, said carton having pressure-sensitive adhesive material for securing said sheet when folded in either of said directions.

6. A device of the character described having,

in combination, a carton having four sides providing an opening, a lid for said opening hinged at the edge of one of said sides adjacent said opening, a sheet of wrapping material carried by said carton and adapted to be folded about the same from said edge in either of opposite directions to that side of said carton which is opposite.

the side to which said lid is hinged, the last-mentioned side having adhesive material for securing the folded sheet, said sheet being formed for readily severing that portion thereof which is in excess of that necessary to fold the sheet to cover said lid and secure it when so folded.

7. A device of the character described comprising, in combination, a carton having a window in one side thereof, a sheet of wrapping material carried by said carton at one edge of said side thereof, said sheet being foldable in either of opposite directions to extend to that side of said carton which is adjacent the opposite edge of said side having said window, and adhesive material at said side of said carton to which said sheet is adapted to extend for securing said sheet when folded, said sheet being formed for readily severing that portion thereof which is in excess of that necessary to fold said sheet to cover said window and secure it when so folded.
