Among the objects of the present invention is to provide novel means in a copying machine for properly and accurately positioning copy sheets so as to provide variable margins thereon.
Another object of the present invention is to provide novel means including a slidable margin bar adapted to cooperate with copy sheets fed into the machine to provide for margins of variable width.
The present invention contemplates the idea of providing novel means in a copying machine, in which'an automatic margin bar is provided to give a limited range of margins on copy sheets fed into the machine, so as to provide for margins on these sheets greater than the margins within the range efiected by this automatic margin bar.
Still a further object of the present invention is to provide novel means adapted to be movably supported upon a frame of a copying machine for positioning copy sheets fed into the machine, such means being movable into and out of operative position, as desired. More particularly, such means includes suitable means whereby the positioning means may be readily and easily adjusted to provide margins varying in width.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide novel means in a copying machine adapted to position copy sheets wherein variable margins may be provided, suitable means being further included for the purpose or" readily indicating the extent or width of these margins. More specifically, such means for positioning these cop sheets includes a slidable margin bar adapted to be moved into any of its adjusted positions and having indicating means associated therewith for indicating the Width of the margin on these copy sheets.
In an embodiment selected to illustrate the invention, suitable means including a rack and pinion mechanism may be provided for adjustably positioning this slidable margin bar Whereby the margins to be produced on these copy sheets may be varied, means associated with said mechanism being further provided whereby the margin to be produced may be readily ascertained.
The present invention still further contemplates the idea of providing a detachable margin bar unit adapted to be readily placed in position in a copying machine, the same including means adapted to be readily adjusted to provide maran embodiment selected to illustrate the present ,as will later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring now more in detail to the drawings,
invention is shown in association with a copying or'hectograph machine having a main frame 2 which supports a bed plate 4 having a platen 6 mounted thereon adapted to provide a suitable surface for support of a gelatinized band 8, this gelatinized band 8 having its ends wound or wrapped around suitable spindles (not disclosed) suitably supported by the main frame 2. Associated with the main frame 2 is a carriage 10 formed with side frame members connected by means of cross members, such as 12 and 14. Suitably connected as by means of the bolts 16, or the like, to the carriage 10 is a copy holder or tray 18 adapted to receive copy sheets, such as 20, for guiding these sheets over a pressure roll 22 suitably mounted in the carriage 10. Operatively associated with the carriage 10 is an auto- 'matic margin bar 24. adapted to have a limited range of adjustment for positioning the end of the copy sheets 20 and to provide for margins thereon within a limited range up to approximately 4;". Copy sheets 20 are moved downwardly into intimate contact with the gelatinized band 8, for receiving impressions, by means of an impression roll 26 suitably supported in the carriage 10 and moved into its various positions by means of a handle member 28, which likewise serves to move the carriage 10 longitudinally of the copying machine by suitable means, which may include a pinion 30 engageable with a rack 32. All of these features above described have been disclosed in a copending application Serial No. 578,910, filed December 4, 1931.
The present invention is therefore primarily concerned with a margin bar unit, generally designated as 34, which includes means which may be used independent of the automatic margin bar 24 to provide for a wide range of margins on the copy sheets 20, or if desired, the same may be used in conjunction with the automatic margin bar 24 to provide for margins not obtainable within the range of margins provided by the automatic margin bar 24. In Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, an embodiment of this margin bar unit is shown as comprising a frame 36 formed with a top plate 38 and downwardly depending bracket or lug portions, such as 40, suitably apertured to receive a transversely disposed shaft or rod 42, which may be suitably mounted in the main frame 2 for supporting one end of the auxiliary frame member 36, whereby the frame 36 may be swung or pivoted upwardly and about the shaft 42 and out of its operative position, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The frame member 36 has its opposite end supported upon the pins 44 secured to the frame member 2 and adapted to engage the lugs or bosses 46 formed on th lower edge of this frame member 36.
The top plate 38 is provided with a plurality of slots, such as the slots 48, adapted to receive the upstanding lugs 50 of a margin bar 52 and to properly guide these lugs or upstanding tongues when the same are moved or slid into their various adjustable positions. The margin bar 52 extends transversely of the frame member 36 and is positioned directly beneath the top plate 38 thereof, each end of this margin bar being suitably secured in any desired manner to rack members 54 and 56. The rack members 54 and 56 are suitably supported and guided by means of the brackets 58 and 60 which may be secured in any desired manner to the under side of the top plate 38, each of these brackets being formed with a depressed and laterally extending shelf portion 62 at one end thereof for support of these rack members and at the other end with a downwardly depending flanged portion 64 adapted to guide these rack members as the same are moved by suitable means to be presently described.
1 The teeth of the rack members 54 and 56 are "adapted to interengage or mesh with the teeth of the pinions 66 and 68, respectively, which are suitably secured in spaced relation upon a transversely disposed shaft or rod 70, which has its end portions suitably journaled in the downwardly depending bracket portions '72 and 74 formed integral with the frame member 36. This transversely disposed shaft or rod is suitably held in its proper position by means of collars 76 and '78 abutting the downwardly depending portions 72 and '74, each of these collars being secured in position upon the rod or shaft '70, as by means of a key or pin 80. As viewed in Figure 3 of the drawings, the left hand end portion of the rod or shaft '70 is adapted to be received within a cutout portion 82 of the main frame 2 when this margin bar unit is in its operative position, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, this end of the rod or shaft 70 having a thumb nut 84 secured thereto to provide suitable means whereby the rod or shaft 70 may be rotated for movement of the margin bar 52 through the medium of the rack and pinion mechanism.
The present invention also includes the idea of providing suitable means whereby the operator of the copying machine may easily and readily determine the extent or width of the margin to be produced on these copy sheets being fed into the machine. In the present embodiment, such means comprises a ratchet wheel 86 formed with a plurality of notches, such as 88, whch may be suitably marked to indicate the position of the upstanding lugs or tongues 50 of the margin bar 52. This ratchet wheel 86 is suitably secured to the shaft or rod 70 adjacent the thumb nut 84 and the notches thereof may be engaged by a pawl 90 suitably secured to a boss 92 formed on the main frame 2, as by means of a screw member 94. This pawl 90 is held in association with any selected notch of the wheel 86 by means of a col spring 96 having an end engaging with a lug or pin 98 on the main frame 2, and the other end thereof engaging with the pawl 90, as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
In Figures 4 to 6 inclusive is disclosed an alternative embodiment made in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown in association with a copying machine having a main frame 2 which is adapted to support a bed pate 4 having a platen 6 supported thereby, over which a gelatinized band 8 is adapted to be supported in the manner as herein d'sclosed in the previously described embodiment. The copying mach ne. as hereinbefore disclosed, includes a carriage 10 with the various mechanisms referred to associated therewith for feeding copy sheets, such as 20, into the machine.
In this alternative arrangement, a margin bar unit is shown as comprising a margin bar frame 100, which consists of a plate member provided with a plurality of slots, such as the slots 102, and has an edge bent to provide a depending flange 104. This frame member 100 has a block 106 secured to one edge thereof, this block being provided with a trunnion 108 adapted to be received within a pocket or recess 110 provided in the main frame 2 of the copying machine. A block 112, similar to the block 106, is suitably secured to the opposite edge of the frame member 100 and is formed with a recess 114, which is adapted to receive the inner end or shank of a trunnion member 116 screw threaded in a suitable opening 118 provided tn the main frame member 2. In the present embodiment of the invention, a margin bar 122 is provided and is supported upon the top plate of the frame member 100, this margin bar 122 be'ng formed with projections, such as 124, adapted to engage in the slots 102, with the exception of the central slot 126. Secured to the margin bar 122 and disposed in guiding relation with the slot 126 is a plate 128 interposed between the margin bar 122 and a plate 129, which, together with the tongues or projections 12%, gu'des the margin bar 122 when the same is moved into its various adjustable positions.
The margin bar 122 is adjusted by means of a connecting member 130 having an end secured to the plate as by means of a screw 132, or the like, this connecting member 130 having its other end pivot-ally secured, as by means of a screw member 134 or the like, to the periphery of a rotary plate 136. Th's plate is secured to the frame member 1001 means of the shank 138 of a hub member 140, which has the oppositely disposed handles or knobs 142 secured thereto, whereby the same may be easily rotated. The rotary or plate member 136 extends or projects through an opening 144 provided in the downwardly depending flange 104 and has a plurality of notches 146 adapted to be engaged by a pawl member 148 secured to the top plate of the frame member 100, as by means of the screw member 150. This pawl member is maintained in its engaging relation with any selected slot 146, as by means of a leaf spring 152 secured in any desired manner to the downwardly depending flange 104. The notches 1 16 may e suitably marked to designate the relative position of the rotary member 136, as likewise the margin bar 122, which is operatively associated therewith, as by means of the connecting member 130. It will be quite apparent that when the disc member 136 is rotated, the same will act as a crank member for moving the margin bar 122 into its various adjustable positions, through the medium of the connecting member 130, for producing margins of variable width on the copy sh ets 20.
While I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodfiment of invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may compre hend other constructions, arrangements of parts, details and features without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a copying machine, the combination of means for receiving copy sheets, an automatic margin bar on said carriage providing a limited range of margins on said sheets, and means in dependent of said margin bar adapted to provide margins on said sheets greater than the margins within said range.
2. In a copying machine, the combination of means for receiving copy sheets, an automatic margin bar providing a limited range of margins on said sheets, a slidable margin bar adapted to provide margins on said sheets greater than the margins within said range.
3. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, an auxiliary frame hingedly secured to said main frame to swing around an axis fixed relative to said main frame and adapted to be swung into and out of operative position, and means slidably associated with said auxiliary frame for positioning said sheets in said machine.

In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, auxiliary frame, means slidably associated with said auxiliary frame for positioning said sheets in said machine, means associated with said auxiliary frame for adjusting said second named means to provide variable margins on said sheets, and means for indicat ng the margins to be produced.
5. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, an auxiliary frame movably associated with said main frame and adapted to be moved into and out of operative position, means associated with said auxiliary frame for positioning said sheets in said machine, means associated with said auxiliary frame for adjusting said second named means to provide variable margins on said sheets, and means for indicating the margins to be produced.
6. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, an auxiliary frame movably associated with said main frame and adapted to be moved into and out of operative position, means associated with said auxiliary frame for positioning said sheets in said machine, means associated with said auxiliary frame for adjusting said second named means to provide variable margins on said sheets, and means associated with said auxiliary frame for indicating the margins to be produced.
'7. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, a margin bar unit swingably mounted in said main frame whereby the same may be moved into and out of operative position around an axis fixed relative to the main frame, said unit including means for positioning said sheets in said machine, and means supported by said unit for adjusting said last mentioned means.
8. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, a margin bar unit adapted to be swingably mounted in said main frame whereby the same may be moved into and out of operative position, said unit including means for positioning said sheets in said machine, means supported by said unit for adjusting said last mentioned means, and means supported by said unit for indicating the extent of adjustment of said positioning means.
9. A margin bar unit comprising a frame, a margin bar slidably supported by said frame, and means for adjusting said margin bar, said means including a rotary member, and a member connected adjacent the periphery of said rotary member and to said bar.
10. A margin bar unit comprising a frame, a margin bar slidably supported by said frame, means for adjusting said margin bar, said means including a rotary member, and a member connected adjacent the periphery of said rotary member and to said bar, and means engaging with said rotary member for indicating the extent of said adjustment.
11. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, an auxiliary frame swingably secured to said main frame and movable into and out of operative position, said auxiliary frame including a top plate, a margin bar slidably supported by said top plate, a transversely disposed shaft supported by said auxiliary frame, a rack operatively connected to said margin bar, a pinion mounted on said shaft and engaging said rack, and means for rotating said shaft for adjusting said margin bar.
12. In a copying machine, the combination of a main frame, means for receiving copy sheets, an auxiliary frame swingably secured to said main frame and movable into and out of operative position, said auxiliary frame including a top plate, a margin bar slidably supported by said top plate, a transversely disposed shaft supported by said auxiliary frame, a rack operatively connected to said margin bar, a pinion mounted on said shaft and engaging said rack, means for rotating said shaft for adjusting said margin bar, and means for indicating the extent of adjustment of said margin bar.
13. In a copying machine, a combination of a main frame, a flat platen, a duplicating band extending over said auxiliary frame mounted in said main frame and movable into andv out of operative position, a margin bar slidably mounted on said auxiliary frame to travel back and forth substantially in the plane of that portion of the duplicating band extending over said platen whereby said margin bar may be brought into a plurality of adjusted positions to obtain different margins on the duplicated sheets, and
means carried by saidrauxiliary frame for bringing said margin bar into said adjusted positions. 14. In a copying machine, a main frame, a flat platen mounted in said main frame, a duplicating HUBERT JAGGER.
