2 Claims.
My invention relates to a device to be placed upon a sucker rod in pumping to space the sucker rod from the tubing so that wear upon the tubing will be prevented.
In many wells the well shaft is not straight but is curved and deviates from the vertical to such an extent that, when the well tubing is installed in the well for pumping, the sucker rod will engage upon the tubing where the curves or bends in the well occur and the reciprocation of the sucker rod will wear the tubing and the rod.
My invention includes as an object to provide an anti-friction member to be placed upon the sucker rod and space the same from the tubing r so that no material amount of wear either upon the rod or the tubing will occur.
I have as an object to provide a sucker rod guide which may be easily assembled upon the rod at any point along the same and which may be clamped tightly to the rod so that it will remain in position.
I contemplate providing a device which may be clamped to the sucker rod and which may be H made of material which is softer than the tubing and hence will not tend to wear the same.
I also contemplate providing a means to secure the guide to the rod which may be tightened when occasion arises to fix the same in position upon the rod.
In the drawing herewith Fig. 1 is a side view in elevation showing my device assembled in position upon the pump rod.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the guide shown in Fi 1.
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the mating parts making up the guide shown separated from the other.
Fig. 4 is a similar side elevation of the other part adapted to interfit with the one shown in Fig. 3.
In the drawing the sucker rod is indicated at 1. It is of usual cylindrical construction and it is upon such a rod that my device is adapted to fit. The device is made up of two parts A and B.
These parts are approximately identical in construction and the description of one will be sufficient. Each part includes a semi-cylindrical portion 2, the inner face 3 of which is flattened to engage with the adjacent section. These flattened faces are grooved at 4! to receive the sucker rod. The flattened face 3 is beveled or tapered somewhat and decreases in thickness toward the smaller end 5, which is tapered on its outer surface to engage within the collar 6 of the adjacent member. Thus longitudinal movement of the part A with respect to B will cause wedging because the tapered faces 3 tend to increase the diameter of the guide and the outer beveled faces on the end 5 wedge in the collar 6.
On one end of the section is collar 6, which is 60 threaded to receive a nut 9. I contemplate placing a plate or washer 10 upon the stud and between the bolt and the guide member to bear against the end face 11 of the collar, as shown particularly in Fig. 2, so that when the nut 9 is tightened it will serve to draw the adjacent section into the tapered seat beneath the collar an? wedge the same firmly against the sucker ro On each of the collars 6 is provided a slot 12, which allows the guide to be inserted about the sucker rod, said rod being of suiiicient width to allow the passage therethrough of the rod. When the two parts are placed against the rod with 85 the groove 4 therein engaging about the rod the tapered end 5 of one section may be inserted within the opening 7 in the collar of the adjacent section and a longitudinal movement of each toward the other will tend to force the two parts into clamping engagement with the rod. The plates 10 and nuts 9 are then placed upon the studs 8 and the tightening of the nuts will further'tend to draw the two parts rigidly against the rod.
In the operation of the pump the rod 1 will be reciprocated and the outer surfaces of the collars 6 upon each of the members will bear against the tubing and prevent wear of the rod or tubing. When the guide becomes so worn in use that it is no longer effective it may be discarded and a new guide employed in its place. I contemplate that the outer diameter of the guide will be materially less than the inner diameter of the tubing so as not to materially obstruct the passage of the liquid. The slots of openings 12 in each guide member also provide space through which the fluid may circulate. The advantages of this device will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
Having described my invention what I claim as new is:
1. A sucker rod guide including a pair of mating members grooved on their adjacent faces to fit about a sucker rod, a collar at one end of each member slotted to receive said rod, said members being tapered in thickness away from said collars, and a beveled end on each member to engage beneath the collar of the adjacent member to force said member into clamping position on the sucker rod.
2. A sucker rod guide including two semi-cylindrical members grooved on their adjacent faces to fit about a sucker rod, a collar integral with one end of each member, said collar being slotted to receive said rod, the end of each section remote from its collar being tapered to engage
