The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamps and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts through the medium of which the jaws may be conveniently adjusted angularly relative to each other for engagement with tapered work.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a clamp of the aforementioned character which will be simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact, light in weight and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the' invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View, taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail view in plan of the socket member constituting one of the elements by means of which the outer hand screw is connected to one of the jaws.
Figure 6 is a detail view in side elevation of the member shown in Figure 5.
Figure '7 is a detail view in bottom plan of the ball retaining top plate which secures the inner hand screw to one of the slides.
Figure 8 is a detail view in elevation of one of the slide retaining hooks.
Figure 9 is a detail view in vertical section through the ball retaining plate constituting a member of the coupling by means of which the outer hand screw in connected, at one end, to one of the jaws.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a pair of opposed jaws 1 and 2, said jaws having longitudinal grooves 3 in their sides. Threadedly mounted in the inner end portion of the jaw l is a hand screw 4 which is provided with an operating handle 5 on one end. At its other end, the hand screw 4 is rotatably and adjustably connected to the inner end portion of the jaw 2 through the medium of a coupling which is designated generally by the reference numeral 6.
The coupling 6 comprises a socket member 7 for the reception of a ball 8 on the adjacent end of the hand screw 4, said socket member 7 having a channel 9 therein which accommodates ,the jaw 2. Mounted on the socket member 7 is a ball retaining top plate 9 which is secured in position through the medium of threaded rods 10 which extend through passages 11 provided therefor in the socket member 7 and through a bar 12 which is mounted transversely beneath the jaw 2. Retaining nuts 13 are threaded on the rods 10, the inner ends of said nuts being formed to provide sockets which accommodate coil springs 14 which yieldingly seat the top plate 9 on the socket member '7. The tension of the springs 14 may be regulated through the medium of the nuts 13, as will be apparent. The top plate 9 has formed therein a slot 15 which facilitates assembly. It will thus be seen that the hand screw 4 is connected to the jaw 2 in a manner to permit rotation of said hand screw as well as to permit swinging and longitudinal adjustment of said jaw 2. The construction and arrangement of the coupling 6 are such that the jaw 2 is frictionally clamped between the socket member 7 and the bar 12.
Mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the jaw 1 is a slide 16 having a channel 17 therein which accommodates said jaw 1. The slide 16 is further provided with pairs of openings 18 for the passage of threaded retaining hooks 19 which are slidably engaged in the grooves 3 of the jaw 1. Threadedly mounted on the upper end portions of the hooks 19 are socketed nuts 20 beneath which coil springs 21 which encircle the hooks 19 are mounted. The springs 21 function in a manner to frictionally secure the slide 16 in adjusted position on the jaw 1.
Rising from the slide 16 is an annulus 22 which encircles a socket 23 in the top of said slide 16. The socket 23 is for the reception of a ball 24 on one end of an inner hand screw 25 which is provided with an operating handle 26 on its other end. A ball retaining top plate 27 is secured by screws 28 on the slide 15 within the annulus 22 for retaining the ball 24 in the socket 23. As best seen in Figure 7 of the drawings, the retaining plate 27 has formed therein a slot 29 to facilitate assembly. Also mounted on the slide 16 is a guide 30 which encircles the annulus 22, said guide having a channel in its lower side which accommodates said slide 16. This channel is designated by the reference numeral 31 (see Figures l4 and 15). The guide 30 is further provided with openings 32 for the passage of securing elements. The purpose or the guide 30 will be presently set forth.
Threadedly mounted on the hand screw 25 is a nut 33 from trunnions 34 project. Journaled on the trunnions 34 are rods 35 which extend through openings or recesses 36 which are provided therefor in the guide 30. The recesses or openings 36 are sufiiciently large to permit limited swinging movement of the rods 35. Nuts 37 retain the rods 35 on the trunnions The lower ends of the rods 35 are journaled on pivot screws 38 which are threaded into a slide 39 which is slidably mounted beneath the jaw 2. The slide 39 is secured on the jaw 2 in a manner similar to that in which the slide 16 is secured on its jaw 1.
It will thus be seen that by actuating both of the hand screws 4 and 25 the jaws 1 and 2 may be adjusted toward or away from each other as desired. It will also be seen that by actuating either one of the hand screws 4 or 25 the jaw 2 may be swung to an angle relative to the jaw 1 for coaction with said jaw l for clamping tapered work. As will be apparent, the slides 16 and 39 may be moved to any desired position on the jaws 1 and 2, respectively.
It is believed that the many advantages of a clamp constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of. construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A clamp comprising a pair of opposed jaws, a hand screw threadedly mounted in an inner end portion of one of the jaws, means rotatably and pivotally connecting the hand screw to the other jaw, slides adjustably mounted on the jaws, a hand screw rotatably mounted on the slide on said one jaw, a nut threaded on the second-named hand screw, and rods pivotally connected to the nut and to the slide on said other jaw.
2. A clamp comprising a pair of opposed jaws, a hand screw threaded through one of the jaws, means rotatably and pivotally connecting the hand screw to the other jaw, a hand screw rotatably and slidably mounted on said one jaw, a nut threaded on the second-named hand screw, rods pivotally connected to the nut, and means pivotally and slidably connecting the rods to the other jaw.
S. A clamp comprising a pair of opposed jaws, a hand screw threaded through an end portion oi one of the jaws, means rotatably and pivotally connecting the hand screw to the other jaw, slides mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the jaws, a hand screw rotatably mounted on the slide on said one jaw, a nut threadedly mounted on the second-named hand screw, rods pivotally connected, at their ends, to the nut and to the slide on said second-named jaw for connecting said second-named jaw to the second-named hand screw for actuation thereby, and means for frictionally securing the slides in adjusted position on the jaws.
s. A clamp comprising a pair of opposed jaws, a hand screw threaded through an end portion of one of the jaws, means rotatably and pivotally connecting the hand screw to the other jaw, slides mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the jaws, a hand screw rotatably mounted on the slide on said one jaw, a nut threadedly mounted on the second-named hand screw, rods pivotally connected, at their ends, to the nut and to the slide on said second-named jaw for connecting said second-named jaw to the second-named hand screw for actuation thereby, and means for frictionally securing the slides in adjusted position on the jaws, said javs having longitudinal grooves therein, the last-named means including spring actuated hooks mounted on the slides and engaged in the grooves.
