UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JESSE B. BARBER, OF CRESOO, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR TIGHTENING FENCE-WIRE.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. l95,43l, dated September 18, 1877 application filed July :1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. B. BARBER, of' Cresce, county of Howard and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Go'mpound Implements, designed for farmers7 use, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a side View 5. Fig. 2, a top or plan view.
My invention relates to devices adapted for tightening wire fences and consists in the combination of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A A represent the two pulleyblocks, secured on the opposite sides of the end of the hooked barG; and B B,the pulleys. c represents the hook to which the articles to be hoisted or raised are attached. D represents a small grab-hook, into which the cord is secured for holding the blocks, with the articles to be hoisted or raised, at any height or point required, which is accomplished by drawing the rope into said hook. The hooked bar C is provided with a square shoulder, d, as shown in Fig. 2. E is an eccentric lever, pvoted to said bar C, and provided with serrations or corrugations e, and between said shoulder and lever the wire is secured when stretching fence-wires.
. Two of the above-described implements are used when stretchingfence-wires and for hoisting purposes, connected by the cord F. I generally, where there is a splice, attach the cams or eccentrics to each side or end of the'wire, and draw them as tight as required, and then cut the splice and make a new one.
When it is desired to tighten at the corners or ends of the fence-wire, I draw the wire around the post and attach one cam or eccentric to the end of the wire, and the other to the same wire six or eight feet from the post, then draw on said wire till tight, and secure to said post. In case wire is broken, goto the break and attach to each wire, and draw them together and splice in the usual manner.
The hooks are intended to be used when using the pulley-blocks for hoisting purposes, onel pulley-block to be secured by the hook to a beam, pole, or rope, or to any other convenient place, and the other pulley-block with hook to be attached to the articles to be hoisted.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wire-fence tightener, as herein described, consisting of hooks C C, provided with eccentric levers E E, blocks A A, hook D, and cord F, all constructed to operate substantially a specified.
