8 Claims. (01. 113-4 16) My present invention relates to automatic fastening devices and more particularly to an improved separable fastener slider and the method of making the same.
. The only practical slider for use in connection with separable fasteners is a slider made of a single unitary piece of sheet metal, and a successful fastener of this type is shown in my Patent No. 1,752,111, granted March 26, 1930. The slider shown in such patent is extremely rigid and durable and has been found to be a commercial success. With a view to simplifying the manufacture of this type of device, I have devised the present invention of a one-piece slider and an improved method of making the same, and such one-piece slider is not only eflicient, but is extremely economical to manufacture. In my present invention, 1 have devised an improved method of making a one-piece fastener slider in which the minimum number of operations are required and practically all expensive tools are dispensed with.
An object of my invention, therefore, is an improved method of making fastener sliders.
Another object of my invention is an improved fastener slider.
Other objects and novel features of the construction and arrangement of the parts comprising the slider" will appear as the descript'on of the invention progresses.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating the one piece slider and the various steps employed in the process of making the same;
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank at an inital stage of the process;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank in a succeeding step in the process;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank in a further succeeding step of the process; Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 4 =-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan view, partly in section of the blank shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, and after a succeeding step in the process;
Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5
and with the pull tab; or bail attached to the device by the usual bail holder;
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the bail holder, and
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the slider prior to the attachment of the bail holder and pull tab.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a blank 10 which may he died out of any suitable sheet material. This blank 10 comprises two end members 11 and 12 'of approximately the shape of .a finished slider, the end members forming the wings of the finished slider. The end members 11 and 12 are connected together by a relatively narrow neck 14 having laterally extending lugs or ears 15 for a purpose to be herein- 30 after described. The blank 10 as shown in Fig. l is subjected to a stamping operation which forms side flanges 16 on the end members 11 and 12. The blank as shown in Fig. 2 is then subjected to a further operation as shown in Fig. 3 "and in which an indentation 1'7 is formed in the neck portion 14 and it will be noted'from an inspection of Figs. 3 and 4 that the form of the indentation 1'7 affects a portion of the end parts 11 and 12 adjacent such neck 14. The blank, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is now subjected to a further operation designed to bring the end portions 11 and .12 into parallel relation with each other to form wings and with the flanges 16 slightly spaced apart from each other as viewed in Fig. 6, so as to allow a tab or stringer to slide therethrough. In performing this last operation on the blank as shown in Fig. 3, the wall of the indentation 17 is formed and swaged into a neck member that is substantially V-shaped in horizontal 39 cross section as will be apparent from an inspection of Fig. 5 and the lugs or ears 15' are left upstanding. However, in vertical cross section the neck appears as shown in Fig. 6, that is,
vits wall does not extend vertically through the 5 wings. The slider now assumes the shape shown in Fig. 5 or in Fig. 8, small vertical notches 20 being formed in the middle of the rear ends of the end members or wings 11 and 12. By referring to 4, it will be noted that a face of the perforation 13 in the end member or wing 11 is undercut as indicated at 20.
Referring to Fig. '1, there is shown a bail holder 21 provided with a leg 22 that has a dovetail portion 23 at its end and which cooperates with the undercut portion 20 of the perforation 13. At the end of the bail holder 21 remote from the leg 22 is a downward extension 24 which extends'vertically of the slider and fits into the notches 20. This extension 24 is provided with a rounded portion 25 which fits into the depression or socket 17. Also on the side of the extension 24 remote from the rounded portion 25 is a. cutout portion 26 which acts as a locking recess to receive the lugs or ears 15 which may now be 5 folded over to lock the bail holder 21 in position, as shown in Fig. 6. Before this bail holder is placed into position, there is slidably mounted thereon the usual bail or pull tab 27.
I have found that by utilizing a depression'or o socket 17, expensive drawing and swaging operations are eliminated and also I have found that the operation of bringing the end portions 11 and 12 into parallel relation with respect to each other and against the wall of depression or socket 1'7 results in the production of a strong neck slider.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. That'process of making a slider of the class described which consists in providing a sheet metal blank composed of end portions connected by a relatively narrow neck, forming a coneshaped indentation in the neck, and then bending the blank transversely to the length of the blank and about the indentation as a center to bring the end portions into parallel relation to each other and with the indentation joining the end portions at one end.
2. That process of making a slider of the class described, which consists in providing a sheet metal blank composed of end portions connected by a relatively narrow neck, forming a coneshaped indentation in the neck, fianging the lateral edges of said end portions and then bending the blank transversely to the length of the blank and about the indentation as a center to form diverging channels. 3. That process of making a slider of the class described which consists in providing a sheet metal blank comprised of end portions connected by a relatively .narrow neck, forming a cone-shaped indentation in the neck, flanging the lateral edges of said end portions and then bending the blank transversely to the length of the blank and about the indentation as a center to form diverging channels, while forming the lateral surfaces of the indentations to approximately V-shape.
4. That process of making a slider of the class described which consists in providing a sheet metal blank comprised of end portions connected by a relatively narrow neck, forming a coneshaped indentation in the neck, flanging the lateral edges of said end portions, bending the blank transversely to the length of the blank and about the indentation as a center to form diverging channels and then forming the lateral surfaces of the indentations to approximate V-shape while simultaneously flattening out the cone-shapedindentation.
5. That process of making a slider of the class described-which consists in providing a sheet metal blank with an inwardly extending coneshaped indentation, and then bending the blank transversely to the length thereof to bring its end portions into parallel relation with the indentation lying between the end portions.

A slider for separable fasteners comprising spaced wings of sheet material and a neck integrally connected to the wings at the rear ends of the latter, said neck extending inwardly between the wings from its connection therewith to form a socket open only at the rear of the slider, a bail holder secured to one of the wings and having an extension fitting into the socket in the neck, and means for retaining the bail holder in position.
7. A slider for separable fasteners comprising spaced wings of sheet material and a neck integrally connected to said wings at their rear ends,
said neck extending inwardly between the wings from its connection therewith to form a socket open only at the rear of the slider, a. bail holder secured to one of the wings and'having an extension fitted into said socket, a locking recess on said extension, and means carried by the body of the slider for engaging in said recess to retain the bail holder-in place.
8. A slider for separable fasteners comprising spaced wings of sheet material and a neck integrally connected to said wings at their rear ends, said neck extending inwardly between the wings from its connection therewith to form a socket open only at the rear of the slider, vertically alignedrecesses at the rear ends of said wings, a
