This invention relates to protecting strips or covering for window frames and their sashes and hasl for the primary object, the provision of a wdevice of the above stated character which will provide an effective seal between a window frame and its sashes to preclude weather elements and also between the frame and the wall of the building, acting as a flashing to prevent leaks about u "the frame.
I With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective View illustrating a modified form of strip engageable with the side of the window frame and the upper Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a window frame of a conventional type mounted in a wall 2 of a building and includes the usual guide rail 3, molding or trimming 4 and sill 5 carrying the sill strips 6. Slidable in the frame 1 are the upper and lower sashes 7 and 8. The foregoing description relates to a well known type of window frame and sashes with my invention applied for the purpose of precluding weather elements.
One set of guide rails 3 is engaged by the usual outer planking 9 of the wall 2. An upper strip 10 engages the upper portion of the frame 1 between the inner and outer guide rails and has formed on one edge a retaining flange 11 fitting in the groove-of the window frame which receives the inner guide rail. The strip 10 is offset, as shown at 12, and terminates into an attaching portion 13 of a considerable width. The offset 12 receives the outer guide rail with Vthe 00 attaching portion 13 positioned between the outer guide rail and the planking 9 of the wall cooperating with the flange 11 in securing the strip to the frame and also forming a flashing between the outer planking of the wall and the window 66 frame. The strip 10 is constructed of metal or any other material suitable for the purpose and is offset to form a bead 14 engageable in a groove formed in the upper portion of the upper sash 7 when the latter is in a window closing position, thereby sealing the upper edge of the sash with the upper portion of the window frame.
Side strips 15 are placed in engagement with the sides of the window frame between the guide rails 3 and have one edge bent to form a flange 'I5' 16 located in the groove which receives the inner side guide rails 3. The strip 15 is also bent angularly to form a flashing portion also cooperating with the flange 16 in securing the strip in place by being positioned between the outer side guide rails and the planking 9 of the wall. The formation of the flashing 17 on the strip 15 creates a channel or groove 18 which receives the outer edge of the outer side guide rails 3. Said formation of the flashing besides forming the channel or groove 18 in the strip provides on the latter a beading 19 extending parallel with the strip and spaced therefrom and receivable within grooves formed in the outer faces of the sides of the upper sash 7, thereby sealing the latter to the window frame.
Side strips 20 are provided for the lower sash and are similarly constructed to the side strips 15, exceptthat the anges 16 are omitted so that one edge of the strips 20 may be positioned 95 between the moldings 4 and the window frame.
A strip 21 is provided for the sill 5 of the window frame and has one edge bent to form an attaching flange 22 received in a groove formed in the finishing or sill strip 6 of the sill 5, while the 100 opposite edge of the strip 21 is bent upon itself to form a beading 23 and a ange 24 resting on the upper face of the sill 5. The lower ends of the side strips 15 may be offset to form grooves to receive the beading 23 as shown in Figure 1. The 105- lower sash 7 when in window closing position rests upon the strip 21, preventing the entrance of weather elements under the lower edge of the lower sash or between the latter and sill 5.
Referring to my modified form of invention, 110,
as shown in Figure 7, the st1'ip 25 is constructed similar to the side strips 15, except the flashing portion thereof adjacent its free edge is bent into substantially L-shape for the purpose of receiving a special type of finishing plank sometimes employed in wall construction.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
In combination with a Window frame having molding and guide rails to slidably receive sashes, upper and side strips positioned on the frame to be engaged by the sashes, said strips being bent to form portions to engage the guide rails to secure the strips to the frame, headings formed on the strips to be received in grooves of the sashes, some of said side strips extending beyond the frame to form ashings located between said frame and the wall to preclude weather elements, a sill strip carried by the frame to be engaged by one of the sashes and yieldable on the engagement of said last sash therewith, and means attaching the sill strip to the frame.
