BURGLAR-ALARM.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 19,527, dated March 2, 18158.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. WRIGHT, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Burglar-Alarms, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, represents a perspective View of the apparatus complete, and of one manner of applying it to a door or window, and Fig. 2, represents a longitudinal vertical section through the box or cylinder that incloses the explosive material, as well as the weights or slugs between, and by which, the torpedo, or other explosive, is set off.

My invention relates to a portable, burglar alarm, which is suspended to, or against -a door or window, so that when said door or window is opened, the apparatus will be detached, and its own weight on striking against the floor or any other thing, will explode a torpedo, or other similar detonating material, and thus cause an alarm.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings.

A, represents a cylindrical box, composed of any suit-able, light, strong material, having a top B, held thereto by, a bayonet fastening a, 0, so that it may easily be removed, and replaced, and held thereto. In the inside of this box A, and resting on the bottom thereof is a weight or slug C, which may be separate and removable from said box, or it may be attached to, or form the bottom of, said box, and still serve the same purpose. Upon this weight, slug, or bottom is placed a torpedo e, composed of any fulminating detonating composition that will explode with a moderate blow or jar. And over this torpedo, is placed an other weight or slug D, and then the lid or cover B is put on. There is a dead eye f, attached to the cover, to which a cord or chain 6, is connected by one of its ends. The other end of said cord or chain, having a spear or pointed piece of metal (Z, fastened to it, by which the apparatus may be suspended to a door or window, (as shown in Fig. 1,) by inserting said spear into the crack or joint of said door or window, so that it will be thrown out or detached by any attempt to open them. The box A, may be of any other convenient shape or size than that represented, and is not of necessity cylindrical, or round. The weights or slugs C, D, are better when loose in the box, because then either end of the box striking, will cause the upper one of the two or the rebound of the lower one, to set off the explosive material. The box may be perforated with holes as shown in the drawing, to allow the sound of the explosion, as well as the force thereof to better escape.

The whole article is compact, cheap, simple. and effective, for its purpose.

Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Confining a torpedo, within a chamber or box, between weights or slugs, so that when said box drops, and strikes against any thing, the force or rebound of the weights shall cause the torpedo to explode, and thus cause an alarm, as herein set forth.
