GEORGE S. MYERS, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURING PLUG-TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 195, I51, dated September 11, 1877 application filed August 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE S. MYERS, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Process for Manufacturing Plug-Tobacco, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improved process of manufacturing plug-tobacco, in which the lump is partially severed into a number of sections, after which it is subjected to the finishing-pressure, which causes an adhesion of the edges of the sections, which may be easily broken off, as required.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a lump or plug of tobacco before being pressed. Fig. 2 is a like view of same after being partially severed by the cuts a. Fig. 3 is a like view of the lump after being partially severed and finished. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the plug, showing the manner of removing the sections B.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a lump or unfinished plug or package of tobacco, and consists of a wrapper and filler, the former enveloping the latter, the lump being ready for the operation of finishing. The first step in the process after the formation of the lump is to partially divide or sever the lump by the cuts a, which pass through the lump, leaving but a slight portion unsevered, which portion serves to con nect the sections represented by B in place. In the present instance the unsevered portion is left at the edge of the lump; but it is plain that it could be allowed to remain anywhere, or at any one point, or even more points,
,along the line of the cut a.
It is also obvious that this semi-section could be made upon lumps of other contour than that above shown. Thus, in a circular lump, the cuts could radiate from a center at which the ligament or uncut portion was left. The cuts could also be made in both directions-that is, crossing the lump at right angles, leaving a ligament at the intersection of the cuts, the object of this portion of the invention being to divide a plug or lump into a number of pieces that are slightly connected with each other.
The lump A thus severed is arranged in a suitably-shaped mold and subjected to great pressure. This causes the severed edges to come in close contact, and effects an adhesion, so that there results a plug capable of being handled, and which yet may be easily divided by breaking off the sections B, as desired, and as shown in Fig. 4.
Thus an entirely novel article of manufacture is produced, being a plug of tobacco divided into a number of sections, so connected as that the plug may be packed or handled, and yet the sections may be easily separated without the use of a knife or other analogous devices.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described process of manufacturing plug-tobacco, which consists in dividing the lump into a number of sections slightly connected, and then subjecting such lump to pressure, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in manufacturing plug-tobacco, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of August, 1877.
GEORGE S. MYERS.
