- 12 Claims. (Cl. 10-104) This invention relates to holders and clamps for thread cutting chasers of die heads and its object is to provide a chaser holder and clamp so constructed as to insure perfect seating of the chaser in the holder and a rigid backing up of the chaser.
A further object is to provide clearance spaces and pockets to mrmit seating of the chaser in spite of thepresence .of foreign particles such as dirt, cuttings, chips or burrs.
A further object is to provide means which will facilitate removal of the clamp and chaser from the block.

In the drawing numeral 10 indicates a holder block having a socket 11 and a slot 12 for receiving securing means for attaching the block'to the die head upon which it is mounted and for operating it. The holder block is provided with a beveled seat 13 for receiving a chaser 15 and a face 14 against which the back of the chaser is supported. The holder block is provided with a plurality of sockets 16 for receiving clamps 1'7. The rear portions of the sockets are beveled as shown at 18 and the clamps have a correspondingly beveled rear side 19. When seated in position a clearance is provided between the beveled portion 18 of the block and the beveled portion 19 of the clamp. The lower rear portion of the clamp has a heel 20 which when the clamp'is in position engages against the sloping seat 21 of the holder block. The lower rear edge of the clamp is cut off to provide a clearance at 22 between the comer of the clamp and the holder to provide a recess at this point to take care of any dirt or cuttings which may lodge here and thus to insure perfect seating of the clamp and the chaser despite the presence of these cuttings. The forward side of the clamp has a lip 23 which engages over the beveled portion 24 of the chaser for holding the chaser inposition. The clamp is so constructed as to provide a space 25 between the face of the clamp andthe adjacent surface on a cut-away portion of the chaser. This clearance is provided only between the face of the clamp and the adjacent back portion of the chaser. The chaser seats solidly againstsurfaces 36 and 3'7 on the block so that while the clearance at 2 5 permits perfect seating of the clamp and chases and provides pockets for foreign particles between'the face of the clamp and the chaser, the chaser is at the same time provided with a rigid backing up against the holding block. The chaser is adjustable longitudinally by a screw 2'7. Bolts 28 secure the clamp to the block. A spring ring 29 is fitted into a groove 30 in the bolt and serves to back out the clamp when the bolt is unscrewed from its socket in the holding block. This provides ready means for removing the clamp from its socket.
The holder shown in Figure 2 is similar to that just described except that a single clamp is used instead of a plurality of clamps as shown in Figure 1. In this form the chaser seats firmly against shoulders 31 and 32 on the upper face of the block 33 as well as against a surface corresponding to surface 14 shown in Figures 4 and 10, with a clearance space 34 between the face of the clamp and the adjacent surface of the chaser.
In the form shown in Figures 3, 11 and 12 a different form of holder block 35 is shown. The clamp is the same as that shown in Figures 5 and 6 and the chaser seats solidly against the faces 52 and 53 on the block and, of course, also against the surface corresponding to surface 14 in Figure 10, witha clearance 38 between the face of the clamp and the adjacent surface on the chaser. The holder block is secured tothe die head by a slide 54 which. engages a corresponding groove in the die head. The block has a beveled slot 55 having a rib 56 in which slot a cam or other element on the head, not shown, engages.
I As best shown in Figure 4 the clamp rests on the angular portion 21 of the block. The surface 21' supports the heel 20 of the clamp so that when the bolt 28 is tightened the chaser is forced down against the surface 13 and at the same time is forced back against surfaces l4, 36 and 37. The clampispositionedatanangle soas besttoresist the clamping force and prevent movement of the clamp toward the front of the block. The clearance between the face of the clamp and the adiacent'portion of the chaser and the clearance between the sloping surfaces 18 and 19 on the block and clamp allow a slight forward and'back movement of the clamp to permit accurate seating in spite of any variations in the machining of the angular surfaces. By means of the spring ring 29 the clamp is easily and quickly removed from its seat.
In Figures 7, 8 and 9 a diiferentform of holder and clamp is shown. In place of the angular surface 21 shown in Figure 4 there is provided a half cone ridge 47 against which the rear dcpending portion or heel 40 of the clamp 39 engages. The heel is cut ofl! to provide a clearance at 42 between the clamp and the socket in the holder block 41 so that any cuttings or burrs which may lodge in the pocket will not disturb the seating of the clamp. As in the other form the forward side of the clamp has a depending lip portion-43 which engages over a corresponding beveled portion 44 on the chaser 45. The clamp is secured to the block by a bolt 48, a spring ring being provided as'in Figure 4 for lifting the clamp out of its seat when the screw 46 is backed out. A clearance 46 is provided between the face of the clamp andthe adjacent surface on the chaser. As in the other forms the chaser is firmly backed up against surfaces 49 and 50, as well as surface 57, on the holder block yet at the same time the clearance 46 insures accurate seating of the clamp and the chaser in spite of the presence of any burrs or cuttings which may lodge between the face of the clamp and the adjacent portion of the chaser. The chaser is adjusted longitudinally in the block 41 by means of the screw 51. It will be obvious to thweskilled in the art that various changes may be made in my device without departing from the spirit of the invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A chaser clamp and holder for thread cutting die heads comprising. the combination with a block having a seat for a chaser and a plurality of sockets for chaser clamps, a chaser clamp positioned in each of the sockets, the bottoms of the sockets sloping from the front toward the rear, and the rear wall of the socket sloping from the rear toward the front of the block, said clamp having a relatively narrow ridge portion adjacent its rear side adapted to rest upon the sloping base of the socket in the holder, the front portion of the clamp having a depending angular lip adapted to engage a shoulder on the chaser formed by cutting away a portion of the back of the chaser, the face of the clamp being spaced slightly from the adiacent back portion of the chaser to provide a clearance'for work cuttings without upsetting accurate positioning of the chaser, the said block having shoulder portions extending throughout the width of the chaser whereby the chaser is backed up through its entire width, the said clamp having a cut-away portion at the intersection of the back and. the bottom of the clamp to provide a recess for work cuttings without disturbing accurate seating otthe clamp in the block, substantially as set forth.
2. A clamp and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a block adapted tobe pivotally attached to the die head and havadapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, substantially as set forth.
3. A clamp, and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a blockadapted to be pivotally attached to the die head and having means engaging with oscillating mechanism on a die head, the block having a longitudinal groove cut along one face adapted to receive a tangential chaser, said block having a plurality of sockets for receiving chaser holding clamps, said sockets having their bottoms sloping from the face of the block toward the rear and having a rear side of'the socket sloping from the rear toward the face of the block, the clamp having correspondingly beveled portions, the bottom rear portion of the clamp having. a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, said rib having a corner portion cut-off to provide a clearance between the chaser clamp and the block 110 to receive iron cutt'mgs, substantially as set forth.
4. adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, said rib having a corner portion cut-01f toprovide a clearance between the chaser clamp and the block to receive iron cuttings, the block having portions adapted to provide a. rigid back support for the chaser, the face of the clamp being spaced from the adjacent back portion of the chaser to provide a clearance between the clamp and the chaser to insure rigid backing up of the chaser and accurate seating of the same in spite of the presence of work cuttings between the face of the clamp and the adjacent back portion of the chaser, substantially as set forth.

A chaser holder and clamp comprising a block having a recess in its front side adapted to receive a chaser and having an adjacent recess for receiving a clamp, said last named recess having a bottom beveled from the front toward the rear of the block and an opposite beveled rear wall and a clamp positioned in said last named recess and having bevels corresponding with those in the block, said clamp having a hp adapted to engagea portion of the chaser and having a rear heel adapted to engage the beveled bottom in the block and a bolt for securing the clamp to the said block, substantially as set forth.

A' chaser holder and clamp comprising a block having a recess in its front side adapted to receive a chaser and having an adjacent recess for receiving a clamp, said last named recess having a beveled lower side and an opposite beveled rear side and a clamp positioned in said last named recess and having bevels corresponding with those in the block, said clamp having a lip adapted to engage a portion of the chaser and having a rear heel adapted to engage the beveled base in the socket, and a bolt for securing the clamp to the said block, said bolt having means engageable with the underside of the clamp when the bolt is backed out for lifting the clamp from its seat, substantially as set forth.
'7. A clamp and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a block movably secured to the die head and having means enclamp having correspondingly beveled portions,
and the bottom rear portion of the clamp having a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, substantially as set forth.

A clamp and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a block movably secured to the diehead and having means engageable with movable mechanism on the die head, the block having a longitudinal groove out along one face adapted to receive a tangential chaser, said block having a plurality of sockets for receiving chaser holding clamps, said sockets having their bottoms sloping from the face of the block toward the rear and having a rear side of the socket sloping from the rear toward the face of the block, the clamp having correspondingly beveled portions, the bottom rear portion of the clamp having a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, said rib having a comer portion cut-off tov provide a clearance between the chaser clamp and the block to receive iron cuttings, substantially as set forth.

A clamp and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a block adapted to be movably secured to the die head and having means engageable with movable mechanism on the die head for moving the block, the block having a longitudinalgroove out along one face adapted to receive a tangential chaser, said block having a plurality of sockets for receiving chaser holding clamps, said sockets having their bottoms sloping from the face of the block toward the rear and having a rear side of the socket sloping from the rear toward the face of the block, the clamp having correwondingly beveled. portions, the bottom rear portion of the clamp having a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, said rib having a corner portion cut-off to provide a clearance between the chaser clamp and the block to receive iron cuttings, the block having portions adapted to provide a rigid back support for the chaser, the face of the clamp being spaced from the adjacent back portion of the chaser to provide a clearance between the clamp and the chaser toinsure rigid backing up of the chaser and accurate seating of the same in-spite of the presence of work cuttings between the face of the clamp and the adjacent back portion of the chaser, substantially as set forth.

A clamp and holder for thread cutting chasers in die heads comprising a block movably secured to the die head and having means engageable with movable mechanism on the die head for moving the block, the block. having a longitudinal groove out along its front adapted to receive a tangential chaser, said block having one or more sockets for receiving chaser holding clamps, said sockets having their bottoms sloping from the front of the block toward the rear, the clamp having correspondingly beveled portions, the bottom rear portion of the clamp having a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket, the said clamp having an overhanging lip adapted to engage a shoulder portion on the chaser the front portion of said overhanging lip being spaced slightly from the adjacent back portion of the chaser, substantially,
as set forth.

The combination in a die head of a chaser holder, clamp and chaser comprising a block movably secured to the die head and having meansv engageable with movable mechanism on' the die head for moving the block, the block having a longitudinal groove out along its front to receive a tangential chaser having thread cutting serrations on its face, a beveled base adapted to seat in the said groove in the block, and a portion of its back cut away to provide a rib thereon, said block having a socket for receiving the clamp, said socket having its bottom sloping from. the front of the block toward the rear and having a rear side sloping from the rear toward the front of the block, the clamphaving a correspondingly beveled portionand the bottom rear portion of the clamp having a depending rib adapted to seat on the bottom of the socket and having a .lip engageable with the rim on the chaser.
