11 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in mechanical toys.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a mechanical toy of the figure type having movable arms and legs with the facial features thereof simulating the actor Charlie Chaplin and embodying manually operable means for effecting movements of the arms and legs of the figure toy characteristic of the actor depicted by the toy.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mechanical toy of the foregoing character wherein the arm and leg at each side of the toy is connected by a link with a rotatable button or the like carried by the body of the toy for alternate engagement with each arm and leg combination to impart movements thereto.
It is a further object of the invention to construct a mechanical toy with movable arms and 0 legs and having a sparking device combined therewith operable by the operating means for the arms and legs. I 7
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists' in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings and particularly to Figures 1 and 2, there is illustrated a mechanical toy in the form of a figure characteristic of the actor Charlie Chaplin and includes a body portion 10 having a pair of legs 11 and 12 pivoted thereto as at 13 and 14 respectively and also a pair of arms 15, and 16 pivoted to the body portion 10 as at 17 and 18 respectively. The body portion 10 carries the head 19, the arm 16 carrying a hat 20 to be placed on the head While the arm 15 carriesthe cane 21, the hat 20 and cane 21 being characteristic of the actor Charlie Chaplin. 10 The arm 15 and leg 11 at one side of the body portion 10 are connected by a link 22 pivoted at one end as at 23 to the arm 15 adjacent the elbow portion thereof While the other end of the link 22 ispivotally mounted as at 24 to the upper end of the leg 11 above the leg pivot 13. The connection between the arm 16 and leg 12 at the other side of the body portion 10 includes a link 25 pivoted at one end as at 26 to the arm 16 adjacent the elbow portion thereof while the other end of the link 25 is pivoted as at 27 to an upper extension 28 on the upper end of the leg 12.
The devices foreffecting movement of the arms and legs in simulation of the actor Charlie Chaplin includes a shank or pin 29 having one end rotated in the body portion 10 and carrying upon its other end an operating button 31. A lug 32a projecting radially of the pin 29 is adapted to be selectively engaged with the pin'32 upon the upper leg extension 28 of the leg 12 and the lug extension33 upon the pivoted end of the arm 15, the pin 32 being intercepted in its path of movement by the lugs 32 and 33 for the operation of the link connected arm and leg at each side of the body portion 10. The'figure toy carries a rearwardly positioned supporting leg 34 that may be grasped by the hand when operating the toy or used as a back support when it is desired to place the toy in an upright standing position on a desk or other support.
In the operation of the device shown in Figures 1 and 2, the supporting leg 34 is gripped in one hand and the spindle or pin 29 rotated by the knob 31. During rotation of the spindle 29,
the full line position and when'the spindle 29 is 116 rotated in a reverse direction, the pin 32 is disengaged from the associated lug permitting the arm 16 and leg 12 to drop by their own weight to the dotted line position, the pin 32 then moving into engagement with the lug 33 to raise the arm 15 and lower the leg 11, the link connected arm and leg at opposite sides of the body portion 10 being alternately operable so that the toy will present either leg in body supporting position.
In the form of invention illustrated in Figures 3 to 8, the body portion 10a has legs 11a and 12a pivotally mounted thereon as at 14a and 15a and arms 15a and 16a respectively pivoted thereon as at 17a and'13a. The arm 15a and leg 11a are connected by a link 2241 while the arm 16a and leg 12a are pivotally connected by the link a. The rear side of the body portion 10a carries a hand grip 340;.
A cross strap is fixed to the front side of the body portion 10a and has forwardly directed to engage the lug 41 carried by the upper end of the leg 11 for shifting the leg 11a and arm 15a connected thereto by the link 22a. This operation effects simultaneous movement of the link connected arms and legs at either side of the body portion 10a.
The sparking device associated with the mechanical toy includes a rotatable disk 42 journalled on the central shaft 43 extending through the disk 36, strap 35 and body portion 10a as shown in Figure 6, fulminating devices 44 are carried by the disk 42 being in contact with the abrasive ring 45 fixed to the stationary disk 36, the fulminating devices 44 being carried by angle arms 46 that are movably supported on the rotating disk 42. The'disk 42 may carry any appropriate design such as illustrated in Figure 5 as being provided with openings 47 covered by transparent colored sheets 48. Rotating means for the disk 42 includes a gear 49 fixed to the shaft 3'7 meshing'with the pinion 50 fixed to the shaft 51 and held in the strap 35, the shaft 51 carrying a gear 52 that meshes with the pinion 53 fixed to the shaft 43 carrying the rotating disk 42. It will be seen that upon operation of the knob 38 upon the shaft 37 effecting movements of the arms and legs of the mechanical toy, motion is also imparted to the rotatable disk 42 for the operation of the sparking device.
From the above detailed description of the invention, it is believed that the construction and operation thereof will at once be apparent, it being noted that the toy may be of a design characterizing the movements and actions of the actor Charlie Chaplin and that the toy may be constructed of any materials desired such as a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, and a rotatable member successively engageable with each arm and leg combination for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on each arm and leg combination and a rotatable member successively movable into engagement with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other armand leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on each arm and leg combination and a rotatable member including a journalled shaft carrying a radial pin successively movable into engagement with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an armand leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an inde pendent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the arm at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the leg at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the arm at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the leg at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member including a journalled shaft carrying a radial pin successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a 1'0- tatable member successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member including a journalled shaft carrying a radial pin successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the arm and leg are at rest.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest, and a sparkler device carried by the body portion and operated by the rotatable member.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member including a journalled shaft carrying a radial pin successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest, and a sparkler device carried by the body portion and operated by the rotatable member.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member successively engageable with the abutments for effecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest, a sparkler device carried by the body portion and operated by the rotatable member, and a gear train interposed between the rotatable memher and sparkler device.

In a mechanical toy, a toy figure comprising a body portion, an arm and leg separately pivoted to each side of the body portion, an independent link connection between the arm and leg at each side, an abutment on the leg at one side of the body portion, an abutment on the link at the other side of the body portion and a rotatable member including a journalled shaft carrying a radial pin successively engageable with the abutments for efiecting simultaneous movements of an arm and leg at either side of the body portion while the other arm and leg are at rest, and a sparkler device carried by the body portion and operated by the rotatable member, and a gear train interposed between the rotatable member and sparkler device.
