The present invention relates to a tractor wheel and has for its prime object to provide a wheel with a plurality of lugshaving means operatively connected therewith so that all of the lugs may -be simultaneously projected or retracted as desired.
Another very important object of the invention resides in the provision of a tractor wheel of this nature with adjustable lugs wherein the structure is simple, easy to manipulate, strong and durable, and thoroughly efiicient and reliable in use and operation.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds,
15 the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that numeral 5 denotes a hub from which radiates outwardly a plurality of spokes 6 arranged in pairs and supporting on their outer ends a rim 7. This rim 7 is formed with a pluss rality of openings 8 arranged in pairs. A lug is associated with each pair of openings 8 and comprises a pair of spaced blocks 9, one for each .opening, connected by a web 10. The blocks 9 have substantially fiat front faces 11 and rear 40 convex faces 12. The lugs are hingedly mounted in the openings as indicated at 14 so that they may be swung outwardly to positions shown in Figure l or swung inwardly to the positions shown in Figure 3. ,5 As shown, each lug assembly, including the web and the two blocks 9, extends transversely across the rim '7 and each lug is of substantially triangular shape in cross section with the hinge barrels 9' located at the front corner. A stop 9.iprojection 34 is formed on the inner face of each lug and has a beveled front edge 35 which extends in front of the lug for engaging a part of the inner face of the rim for limiting inward movement of the lug, as shown in Figure 3. The parts are so formed that when said edge 35 is engaging the rim, the face 11 will be flush with the outer face of the rim and completely close the opening 8, as also shown in Figure 3. A shoulder forming projection 36 is formed on the rear part of the lugs at the inner portions thereof, and this projection may be formed by an extension of the web. This projection will engage a part of the inner face of the rim, when the lug assembly is swung outwardly, to limit outward movement of the assembly, as shown in Figure 1. A lug or projection 37 is formed on the inner face of the central part of the web, at the rear thereof, to which the link 15 is pivoted, as at 16.
The links 15 are also engaged as at 17 with an annual member or ring 18. This ring 18 is disposed about a plurality of grooved rollers 19. The grooved rollers 19 are mounted on cross members 20 between the spokes 6. A portion of the ring 18 is formed with rack teeth 22 which mesh with a rack gear 23 on a shaft 24 journaled in a pair of the spokes 6 and having on one end a gear 25 which meshes with a gear 29. The gear 29 is on a shaft 30 journalled in one of the spokes and operable by a hand crank 31.
A pin 33 is adapted to be placed in an opening in the spoke last mentioned to engage between the teeth of the gear 29 to hold the same in locked position.
Obviously by turning the crank 31 the ring 18 may be rocked so as to project the lugs or may be rocked in the opposite direction so as to retract the lugs. The block sections of the lugs always fill the openings 8 whether retracted as in Figure 3 or projected as in Figure 1. As the lug is moved inwardly, its convex rear face will have mud or the like removed therefrom by the rear wall of the opening 8 as said face comes close enough to said wall to produce this scraping action. The wheel revolves in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 1.
It is thought that the construction, utility and operation and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new is:
In a tractor wheel having an opening in its rim, 9. lug of substantially triangular shape in cross section and having its inner face substantially flat, and its rear face substantially convex and its front face substantially flat, a hinge connecting the front corner of the lug to the front wall of the opening, a stop forming projection on the flat inner face extending slightly forwardly of said face and having its forward end beveled for engaging the rim for limiting inward movement of the lug, a projection at the rear of the lug forming a continuation of the inner face thereof for engaging a portion of the rim for limiting outward movement of the lug and means connected with the inner part of the lug for maving it to operative and inoperative positions, said lug being so proportioned to the opening to fill the same when in retracted position, with the rear convex face lying close to the rear wall of the opening in all positions of the lug, whereby said rear wall of the opening will scrape material from the rear face of the lug as the lug is retracted.
