Description

Z utWMITU/ZS ES 8. H. MOFFETT & 0. DEAN. ALARM-REGISTERS'FOR USE IN BAR-ROOMS, 846.
No. 194,951, Patented Sept. 4,1877.
NPETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON, D. G.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H.'MOFFETT, OF HARRISONBURG, AND OTIS DEAN, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ALARM-REGISTERS FOR USE IN BAR-ROOMS, 80c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194.95 1, dated September 4, 1877 application filed April 28, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL H. Monnn'r'r, of Harrisonburg,in the county of ltockingham, and OTIS DEAN, of Richmond, in the county Henrico, and in the State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompany- I ing drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a registering apparatus and alarm, designed especially for use in registering drinks under the new liquor-law of the State of Virginia, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in wl1ich Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a vertical section, of our register.
A represents a box or case, of any suitable form and dimensions, provided with a hinged lid, B, which is to be locked by any suitable locking device.
Within the box A is a bell or gong, G, suspended from an arm, E, or it may be supported upon a suitable post, if desired. Directly opposite this bell or gong is a striker or strikingarm, D, sliding horizontally in a suitable frame, H, and actuated by a spring, a, and a retracting-spring, b, the latter operating to draw the striker away from the gong when the former spring a has thrown it against the gong.
On the under side of the striker D is a lug or projection, d, which is actuated by 2. lug or flange, e, on a horizontal shaft, G, which passes through from the back of the box, and has on its rear or outer end a crank, J, by means of which it is rotated. The outer end of the crank J is held by a grooved circle. I, attached to the rear of the box.
For each revolution of the crank J the flange e, striking the lug d, draws back the striker D, and as soon as the flange clears said lug the spring a throws it suddenly forwardto sound the alarm.
On the inner end of the shaft G is a pinion, i, which operates a gearing consisting of a series of shafts, h, pinions m, and cog-wheels L, and each shaft being provided with a pointer, n, which pointers or fingers operate on a series of dials, It.
This registering mechanism is held in a suitable frame, 1?, and the dials are seen through a glass-covered opening in the front of the box, said opening being also provided with a hinged cover, S.
The various gears of this register are made in such proportions that for each revolution of the shaft G the pointer on the first dial will register 1, and so on to 100; the next dial will register to 1,000, and to any indefinite number. 7
The register cannot be set back, on account of a spring-pawl,p, arranged to engage with a ratchet-wheel, s, on the shaft G.
It will thus be seen that for each revolution of the shaft G the alarm is sounded once and the register operated.
The invention is to apply this register under the new liquor-law of the State of Virginia, the authorized persons taking down the figures on the dials at stated periods, the same as is now done with gas-meters.
The invention may, however, be applied to any other purposes desired.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described register, consisting of the shaft G with flange e and pawl and ratchet p s, striker D with lug d and springs a b, the bell or gong O, and the registering mechanism with pointers and dials, all inclosed within a box, and constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands and seals this 10th day of April, 187 7.
