This invention relates to a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, for supplying wrapping paper in desired amounts from a roll for wrapping up vended goods of various kinds.

In many merchandise stores the available space so taken up by fixtures and stock that there is no room for the placing of a wrapping paper supply fixture without disposing it in an awkward and inconvenient or obstructing position.

One object of my invention is to provide a wrapping paper supply device which may be applied as an attachment to a show case or counter in such manner as to be in a non-obstructing position and yet in a position to permit ready and convenient removal of the wrapping paper as desired for use.

Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this character in which the supply roll may be housed within the show case or countor in an inconspicuous position while a cutter and supporting and guiding means for the free end of the paper sheet are disposed at a point on the exterior of the counter convenient for use without the operator assuming a bending or other awkward posture.

Still another object of the invention is to provide means for preventing any excess amount of paper from being drawn off the supply roll in the event that a sharp pull is given upon the free end of the paper strip and the supply roll is caused to rotate by momentum an excessive number of times or rotate to a greater extent than is required to supply the desired amount of paper.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a novel construction of mounting of the paper supply roll, whereby a depleted roll may be readily and conveniently removed and a full roll substituted in its place, and a novel construction of supporting and guiding, braking and cutting means for the free end of the roll, whereby the desired amount of paper to be removed may be readily drawn out and severed from the paper sheet, while the delivery end of the paper sheet will be efiectually held and prevented from slipping back and causing trouble and annoyance.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:--

i. is an end elevation, partly in section, of a. refrigerator show case, to which the invention is shown in the present instance applied, and illustrating the attachment as applied thereto for use.

Fig. 7 is a view showing a modification in the braking and cutting means employed in conjunction with the supporting and guide roll.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a show case of any ordinary, conventional or suitable construction, and which, in the present instance, is shown as a refrigerator show case of a well known type. This case is provided with a base compartment 2 having a doorway opening 3 in the lower portion of its rear wall, the upper portion 4 of which wall may form the rear wall or" an upper compartment of the show case.

In accordance with my invention, I dispose and house within the compartment 2 a supporting frame 5 for a supply roll, drum or cylinder 7 on which the roll of paper 6 is wound, which frame comprises a baseboard or plate 8 from which rise a pair of spaced standards 9 each provided on its inner face with a pair of inwardly extending vertical flanges 10 connected at their lower ends by a U-shaped portion 10. The U- shaped portions 10 form hearings for the end journals of the roll in which said journals may turn or rotate to allow the paper to unwind, while the spaces between the flanges 10 form guide 100 channels or guideways ll slidably receiving the ends of a metal brake bar 12 which rests upon the upper surface of the paper roll so as to oppose a predetermined resistance to turning of the roll and unwinding of the paper therefrom. The channels also serve as guideways leading to and from the bearings 16' allowing an old roll, 1. e., a roll from which the paper has been exhausted, to be easily removed and a new roll to be as readily applied in its place.

The base 8 rests upon the floor 13 of the compartment 2 adjacent to the opening 3, and is hinged at its rear edge, as at 14, to the floor in such manner that the supporting frame and roll may be swung from a normal upright position shown in full lines in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 in which it is housed within the compartment 2, to a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which the roll and frame standards extend horizontally outward through the opening in such manner as to permit a roller 7 from which the supply of paper has been exhausted tobe removed and a fresh roll substituted in its place, the rolls being readily removable from and applicable to the bearings 10' via the channels 11 when in the latter-named position. By this means an old roll may be removed and a new one substituted in its place without the necessity of inserting and removing rolls through the opening or doorway 3 and without th operator bending over or assuming an awkward and difficult position in order to carry out these operations.

The free end 15 of the paper sheet is conducted from the roll outwardly through the doorway or opening 3 and upwardly alongside the upper rear wall portion 4 on which is mounted a supporting and guide roll 16, this roll 16, and preferably also the paper holding rolls '7, being provided with a peripheral coating or covering 17 of rubber, felt or other suitable material to which the paper tends to adhere and against which the paper frictionally bears to prevent it from slipping. This roll 16 is positioned at a convenient level upon the rear of the counter to enable it and the free end of the paper strip to be manipulated by a clerk or operator in a convenient manner and without the necessity of the clerk stooping or assuming an awkward posture. The extremity of the paper strip is designed to rest upon the top surface of the roller 16 and to be held in contact therewith by a combined cutter and brake member 18, of V- shaped, triangular or inverted trough-shaped form and comprising downwardly diverging front and rear walls 19 and 20 and end walls 21, said end walls being shorter than the front and rear walls and concavely curved at their lower edges to fit the surface of the roll 16. The member 18 rests by gravity upon the roll or intervening portion of the paper sheet and is of sufficient weight to hold the roll and paper against slippage of the paper or casual rotary movement of the roll, the lower edges of its end walls and the inner faces of the lower portions of its front walls forming friction brake surfaces holding the roll 16 and portion of the sheet engaged thereby from relative movement. The rear wall 20 of the member 18 also acts in this connection as a stop surface to hold the paper sheet from rearward movement in the event that there is any tendency of the sheet to slip beneath the surfaces of the front and end walls of the member 18. The front wall 19 of the member 18 is design d to serve as a cutter and to this end its free edge is beveled or sharpened to form a cutting edge 22 along which a desired portion of the sheet which has been pulled forward beyond such edge by the operator may be drawn and thus severed from the remainder of the sheet to supply a wrapping sheet for use.

As shown, the roll 16 and member 18 are arranged in superposed relation between and mounted on brackets 23 secured to the wall portion 4. Each of these brackets 23 has a flange 24 extending outwardly or rearwardly at right angles thereto and provided with bearing openings 25 receiving journals 26 on the ends of the roll 16 and keeper slots 27 receiving retaining and guiding members 28 in the form of lugs or other projections on the end walls of the member 18, whereby said member 18 is held in position against displacement with capacity for sufilcient Vertical movement to allow it to be elevated to a requisite extent to permit the operator to insert the free end of the portion 15 of the paper sheet beneath it, whenever required, to prime the device for action. This construction and mode of mounting the roll 16 and combined brake device and cutter 18 requires the removal of at least one of the brackets 23 in applying or removing the roll or member 18, but it will, of course, be understood that in practice the mode of mounting may be such as to permit either the roll or the member 18, or both, to be removed without the necessity of removing either bracket.

ing just a sufficient portion of its extremity projecting beyond the cutting edge 22 to be conveniently gripped by the operator, so that whenever desired the required amount of paper may be drawn outward to form the wrapping sheet of 1 I required size which is to be severed from the strip. This severing operation is performed, as previously stated, by drawing the projecting portion of the sheet along the cutting edge 22, whereupon the brake surface of the member 18 formed by the wall 20 will operate to prevent the roll 18 from turning and/or the free end of the strip 15 from sliding backward in rear of the plane of the part 20, so that the operator may grip the roll 16 and turn it forward to again project the extremity of the sheet beyond the cutter 22, thus disposing the sheet in preparedness for the ensuing dispensing action. In the practical operation of the device, the member 18 cooperates with the roll 16 not only to hold the free end of the paper strip from casual displacement, but also provides a means, located with the roll at a proper elevation, to allow the sheet to be drawn out to the required extent and severed in a ready and convenient manner and without the necessity of the operator taking any extraordinary precautions in order to prevent the strip from slipping back out of engagement with said roll 16 and member 18. It will be understood that,

paper extending between the rolls 7 and 16, there is great liability of causing the roll 7 to turn too freely by momentum and feed off an excess amount of paper, in the event that the free end of the paper strip should be drawn forward too momentum in the event of a sharp or quick pull upon the free end of the strip.

While the use of the combined brake member and cutter 18 is preferred, because of its unitary character and simplicity of construction and effi ciency of operation, other means may, under some conditions be provided to serve the same purpose.

I have, for example, shown in Fig. 7 a modified construction in which an auxiliary braking roll 20 and a pivoted weigh ed cutter 19 are provided for cooperation with the roll 16 in place of the corresponding parts 19 and 20 of the member 18. The roll 20' in this modified construction may be provided with a friction surface similar to the friction surface 17 of the roll 16 and is arranged to bear upon the sheet at the rear of the upper portion of the surface of the roll 16 to hold the paper sheet from slipping backward, while the gravity cutter 19' also cooperates with the roll 20 to prevent backward slipping of the sheet and serves as a means whereby a drawn out portion of the strip 15 may be severed from the remainder thereof to form a wrapping sheet.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the construction and mode of operation of my new and improved wrapping paper attachment for show cases will be readily understood without a further and extended description and it will be seen that the invention provides an attachment of this character which is readily applicable to counters and show cases in such manner as to be partly housed within the show case or counter and partly disposed upon the exterior thereof so as to occupy but little room space in the store room, and arranged so as to be conveniently operated and disposed so that it will not form an obstruction to free passage and movements of clerks or attendants in serving customers and performing other duties. Also it will be seen that the invention provides an attachment which allows ready removal of supply rolls from which the paper supply is exhausted and substitution of full rolls therefor, and the retention of the free end of the paper strip in position to be readily gripped and severed for the removal of wrapper sheets of the desired sizes whenever required. The invention, furthermore, is of simple construction and may be applied for use at a comparatively low cost.

While the construction disclosed for purpose of exemplification is preferred, it will, of course, be understood that changes in the form, arrangement and details of construction may be varied within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

What I claim is:-

1. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters and the like including means for supporting a paper supply roll in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to' be drawn therefrom, a brake device mounted on the support and bearing on the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a roll, and a weighted member resting by gravity on the supporting and guide roll and having a brake surface and a cutting surface.

2. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters and the like including means for supporting a paper supply roll in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to be drawn therefrom, a brake device mounted on the support and bearing on the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a delivery roll, and a gravityoperated member bearing on the upper surface of the delivery roll and having a brake surface at one side of the vertical center of the roll and a cutting surface at the opposite side of the vertical center of the roll.

3. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters and the like including means for supporting a paper supply roll in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to be drawn therefrom upwardly at the rear of the counter, a brake device mounted on the support and bearing on the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a delivery roll, and a gravityoperated combined brake member and cutter comprising a substantially V-shaped or triangular body having downwardly diverging walls bearing upon the roll on opposite sides of its vertical center and forming a brake and a cutter respectively.

4. In a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, counters and like receptacles having a storage space or compartment open at the rear thereof, a paper roll holding support pivotally mounted in said compartment so as to be swung into and out of the same through said opening, and means disposed at the rear of the counter in spaced relation to said opening for holding and guiding the paper sheet fed from said supply roll and severing a drawn out portion of said sheet from the remainder of the sheet.

5. In a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, counters and like receptacles having a lower storage space or compartment open at the rear thereof, a paper roll holding support pivotally mounted in said compartment so as to be swung into and out of the same through said opening, a brake device mounted on said support and acting on the roll, and means mounted at the rear of the counter in spaced relation to said opening for supporting and guiding the free end of the paper strip fed from said supply roll and severing a drawn out portion of the strip from the remainder of the strip, the same comprising a supporting and guiding roll, and a weighted combined brake and severing device coacting with said roll.

6. In a wrapping paper attachment for show cases and the like including a paper roll support pivotally mounted to swing from a vertical to a horizontal position and vice versa, said support having paper roll guiding and bearing means constructed to permit application and removal of a roll when the support is horizontally disposed, a brake device carried by the support for action on the roll, and paper guiding and supporting means arranged to receive and hold the free end of a paper strip drawn from said supply roll.

7. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters and the like including means for supporting a paper supply roll in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to be drawn therefrom, means acting on the roll to oppose a resistance to the unwinding of the paper from the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a delivery roll and a vertically movable member normally arranged to bear against the strip engaging the roll and having paper guiding, braking and severing surfaces.

8. In a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, counters and the like including a paper roll holding support, means acting on the paper roll held by said support to exert a braking action thereon, said support being pivotally mounted so as to be swung from a vertical to a horizontal position and vice versa and adapted in the latter-named position for application of the roll thereto and its removal therefrom, and means vertically spaced with relation to said support for holding and guiding the paper sheet drawn therefrom and severing a portion of said sheet from the remainder of the sheet.

9. In a wrapping paper attachment for show cases, counters and like receptacles having a storage compartment, a paper roll holding support pivotally mounted to swing into and out of said compartment, and means on said receptacle externally of the compartment and vertically spaced with relation thereto for uiding, holding and severing a portion of a sheet drawn out from the supply roll.

10. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters, show cases and like receptacles, a paper roll supporting means housed Within the receptacle and comprising standards having guideways provided with terminal bearings for the roll, a gravity brake movable in said guideways and resting on said roll to prevent undue unwinding of the paper from the roll, and paper guiding and supporting means arranged externally of the receptacle in vertically spaced relation to the supply roll to receive and hold the free end of a paper strip drawn outward from said supply roll.

11. In a Wrapping paper attachment for counters, show cases and like receptacles, supporting means housed within the receptacle and comprising standards having grooved guideways terminating in bearings for a roll of paper from which the paper in strip form is to be drawn, a gravity brake device slidable in said guideways and resting on the roll to govern the withdrawal of paper therefrom, and means mounted in vertically spaced relation to the roll supporting means externally of the receptacle for holding and guiding the paper strip from the supply roll and severing a portion of the strip from the remainder of the strip.

12. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters, show cases and like goods receptacles, a paper roll supporting frame member mounted to swing between a normally vertical roll supporting position in which it is disposed wholly within the receptacle and a roll applying and removing position at an angle to said normal position in which its roll supporting portion projects outside the receptacle, a brake device acting on the roll to regulate the feed of the paper from the roll, and means upon the exterior of the receptacle arranged at an elevation above the supply roll for supporting and guiding the strip and adapting a portion of the strip to be severed from the remainder of the strip.

13. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters, show cases and like goods receptacles, the combination of means for supporting a paper supply roll within the receptacle in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to be drawn outward therefrom, a gravity brake slidably held and guided by said supporting means to rest upon the paper roll and oppose a resistance to the unwinding thereof from the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a delivery roll arranged upon the receptacle above the level of the supply roll, and braking and severing means superposed upon and vertically movable toward and from said delivery roll.

14. In a wrapping paper attachment for counters, show cases and like receptacles, the combination of means for supporting a paper supply roll within the receptacle in such manner as to permit the paper in strip form to be drawn therefrom upwardly at the rear of the receptacle, a brake device mounted on the support and hearing on the roll, and a supporting and guiding means for the free end of the drawn out strip comprising a roll, and guiding, braking and severing means for the free end of the paper strip comprising a supporting and guide roll arranged upon the exterior of the receptacle above the supply roll, and a gravity operated device engaging and holding the free end of the strip in con tact with the supporting and guide roll, said means respectively forming a brake and having a cutter for holding the strip against rearward movement and permitting a portion of the strip to be severed from the remainder of the strip.
