My invention relates to barrels and particulai-ly to a barrel of the all metal type made ofinner and outer liquid containing portions which are assembled and reinforced to provide a unit construction. 4
In the co-pending applications of C. H. Widman, Serial No. 665,139, filed April 8,1933, and in my co-pending application, Serial No. 672,618, filed May 24, 1933, and which were assigned to the assignee of the present invention, metal barrels were illustrated, described and claimed which are somewhat similar to the barrel of the present invention.
The barrel of the present invention embodies the central liquid container portion made of like two stampings which are outwardly anged and oppositely disposed and welded at the flanged portion to constitute the`complete inner liquid containing portion of the barrel. Outer reinforcing portions in a like manner, are welded together at the bilge portion to provide complete reinforcement for the inner liquid containing portion. The outer reinforced portions have a pressed-in head to form chimes at the end of the barrel, on the inner surface of which, a heavy metal ring is retained, preferably, by deforming the metal thereabout to strengthen the chime end. Insulating material may be provided between the inner and outer yportions and at the various portions to be welded, a strip of asbestos material may be disposed which has insulating properties and will withstand the welding heat to protect the insulating material.In
yAccordingly, the main objects of my invention are: to provide a barrel having anl inner and outer metal portion which is-united together to form a complete barrel; to provide the ends of outer encompassing and reinforcing portions for' the inner liquid portion with chimes for carrying and stacking purposes; to provide an annular reinforcing element within the chimes which is retained therein, preferably, by a crimping operation; to provide insulating material in the nature of strips of exible cloth-like material in the space between the inner liquid containing will become apparent, when referring, for a better understnding of my invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

The present invention follows somewhat the teachings of the above mentioned co-pending applications wherein the inner liquid containing portion 10 of the barrel is made up of like stampings 11 which are flanged at their upper ends to be butted together and welded at the bulge 12 to form the complete inner liquid containing portion. Like reinforcing stampings 13 30 encompass the exterior of the inner liquid container portion 10 of the barrel, being welded together at the bilge, preferably, but not necessarily at the same time as the weld is made on the stampings 11 of the inner liquid containing por- 85 tion 10. In this manner, the like pairs of metal stampings 11 and 13 form a unit barrel, the construction of which, along with the construction of the bung at the bilge and in the head, substantially follows the construction as outlined in the above mentioned co-pending application. The improvements embodied in the present construction will now be described in detail.
The reinforcing portions 13 have step portions 15 at the ends which are arcuately shaped and 95 reversely bent at 16 to provide the pressed in heads 17 for the barrel. The portions 15 and 16 form the chime on the end of the barrel for carrying and stacking purposes. A cylindrical 1 ring 18 of heavy section, is dropped in the recess 00 between'the portions 15 and 16 and abut against thevarcuate inner surface to be retained in fixed a relation thereto by' a rolling operation which deforms the portions 15 and 16 to have the metal 105 encompass the ring portion 18 for more than 180 degrees. In this manner, the ring 18 is retained in the chime portion of the reinforced portions 13 to reinforce the portion and add strength thereto. It is understood that welding, brazing. or 11o other well known operations may be utilized for retaining the ring 18 within the chime.
When assembling the elements of the barrel, an insulation strip 21 is first disposed on the side of the reinforcing portion 13, within the chime space and adjacent to the annular ring 18. This strip 21 may be overlapped or formed into a complete annular element. End insulating portions 22 are then placed over the bottom of the head 17 to abut against the side insulation portion 21, as illustrated. The insulating material is preferably made of a ilexible material, such as hair, felt, or thelike, although it is understood that it is within the purview of my invention to employ a more rigid insulating material, such as paper, celetex and the like. An insulating member 23 may be provided on top of the insulating member 22 to be pressed together between the heads of the inner and outer portions so as to retain the insulating material in place.
After the insulating material is assembled in the reinforcing portion 13, the inner container portion 11 is then disposed therein. Asbestos insulating strips 24 are disposed in the space between the two portions at the bilge of the barrel for the purpose of withstanding the heat of welding which is to be made at the central bilge por- "-ion of the barrel. In a similar manner, insulating rings 25 and 26 are ldisposedover the insulating material adjacent to the bungs to protect the insulating material from the heat of the weld to be made thereat. The asbestos material not only protects the insulating material 21 and 22 but also has insulating properties which further insulatesthe barrel. It is to be understood, that at any other portion of the barrel to be welded, the insulating material may be protected by asbestos material as described for the portions of the barrel which have been illustrated as being welded. The barrel thus constructed is extremely rigid and completely insulated against the transfer of heat between the inner and outer metal portions. 'Ihe annular ring in the chime portion of the barrel materially strengthens the ends of the barrel and prevents the chimes from being distorted.
While I have described and illustrated but a single embodiment of my' invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that variois changes, omissions, additions and substitutions may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as set forth in the accompanying claims.
LI claim:
1. A barrel having a liquid containing portion made of like pot shaped elements, a reinforcing portion of greater area for encompassing said first portion to form a space therebetween, and insulating material disposed in the space between the two portions, and asbestos material disposed adjacent to the insulating material at points to be welded.
2. A metal barrel including, in combination, a
central liquid container portion and an outer reinforcing portion spaced therefrom, insulating material provided between said portions, and asbestos material disposed in said space adjacent to the portion to be welded.
3. An all metal barrel provided with an outer and inner sheet metal portion which is spaced apart to be welded together, strips of insulating material provided between said parts, and an asbestos material disposed within the space adjacent to a portion to be weldedV to prevent the burning of the insulating material, due tothe welding operation.
4. An all metal barrel including, in combination, an inner liquid container portion made of metal, an outer reinforcing portion encompassing said liquid containing portion and spaced therefrom, heads inwardly depressed at the ends of the reinforcing portion forming chimes on the ends of the barrel, insulating material in the space between said portions, and asbestos material disposed in said space adjacent to the portion to be welded to protect the insulating material from the welding heat.
