This invention relates to the production of a clich, such as an electrotype or stereotype plate, in accordance with the pica unit of measurement, and relates particularly to a machine for trimming the edges of such plates to a predetermined pica measurement and recess or groove the undersurface of the marginal portions of the plate for the engagement of members to secure the plates upon printers furniture for assembling with or without type in a chase, instead of securing the electrotype or stereotype plate to the usual wood block, as by nailing.
It has heretofore been the practice in the trimming of plates of this character to first trim the edges of the plate and then by a separate operation recess or groove the undersurface or the marginal portions of the plates for engagement of the plate securing members. This not only necessitates the time to set up a plate twice in the cutting machine but there is also a possibility that the recesses or grooves will not be properly positioned in the plate.
It is the object of the present invention to provide an improved machine for trimming plates of this character to overcome this disadvantage by the provision of a pair of cutters to simultaneously operate upon the plate, the one cutter being mounted in fixed position and adapted to trim the edges of the plate, while the other cutter is adjustably mounted and adapted to operate upon the plate successively with the trimming cutter and simultaneously with the trimming of the edge of the plate recessing or grooving the undersurface at the marginal portions of the plate.
The recessing or grooving cutter is normally positioned to be inactive to groove the plate, and it is a further object of the invention to provide adjustable means wherein the plate as it is moved relative to the trimming and grooving cutters in the operation of the trimming of an edge thereof, will set means in operation to adjust the grooving cutter to efiect a cutting of a groove at a predetermined point or points in the plate and of predetermined extent.
A further object of the invention relates to means combined with the machine to prove the trimming of the plate to a predetermined size.
Other objects and advantages will hereinafter appear.
In the drawings accompanying and forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a plan view or an embodiment of my improved machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates. 7

Figure 6 is a view showing the engagement of gauge members mounted on a plate supporting table and relative to which the plate is adapted to be positioned to gauge the width or length to which a plate is to be trimmed and'the position in which the groove or grooves are to be cut in the undersurface or at the marginal portion of a plate.
Figure '7 is a plan view of a trimmed plate and showing an arrangement of grooves for the engagement of plate securing means therein.
Figure 8 is a view similar to Figure 7 and showing themanner of arranging the grooves for plate securing means in an arcuate marginal portion of a plate.
Figure 9 is a perspective view, partly in section, toshow the manner of assembling and securing a trimmed and grooved plate with type and printers furniture for mounting in a chase; and
Figure 10 is a perspectiverview of a plate securing hook for engagement in a plate groove for securing the plate assembled on printers furniture for mounting in a chase.
The embodiment of the invention illustrated comprises a standard S having parallel recesses extending along the top and opposite sides with the inner walls of the recesses inclined to overhang the bottom horizontal walls and forming slideways, as at 11, for the slidable engagement of correspondingly formed ribs on a table 7 to have sliding movement longitudinally of the top of the standard to support an electrotype or like plate P clamped thereto with a marginal portion projecting therefrom and presenting the same by the movement of the table to cutters to trim and cut grooves or recesses in the marginal portions of the plate. To and fro longitudinal movement is imparted to the table by a lead screw 12 rotatably supported, as at 13, in a wall at one end of the top of the standard and extending transversely of a channel portion in the standard between the slideways 11, the lead screw having threaded connection with a block 14 secured to and extending from the bottom of the table, said lead screw having a hand wheel 15 fixed on th end projecting from the standard. One longitudinal side 16 of the table terminates within one of the longitudinal standard guideways l1 and the other longitudinal side portion 17 extends beyond the guideway 11 at the opposite side of the standard, and said side is arranged with indicating means, shown as a scale calibrated or graduated in pica measure ment for a purpose to be hereinafter described.
A rotatable trimming cutter A and a rotatable grooving or recessing cutter B are mounted in juxtaposed relation to each other intermediate the ends of the standard S and at the side in opposed relation to the side 16 of the table to rotate in the plane of movement of the table and the grooving cutter to follow the trimming cutter. The trimming cutter A is mounted to rotate in fixed position in a bearing member 19 on a bracket 20 mounted on the standard, and the mounting of the cutter in the bearing adapted to adjust the cutter in an axial direction and secured in adjusted position by a set screw 21, and the bearing may have adjustment in a direction toward and away from the table. The grooving cutter B is mounted to have adjustment toward and away from a marginal portion of the plate P projecting from the table. For this purpose a bearing member 22 in which the cutter is mounted is carried at one end of a bar 23 slidable in a guide member 24 of the bracket 20, the cutter mounting with the cutter also being adapted to have axial adjustment and secured in adjusted position by a set screw 25. The cutter carrying bar 23 extends transversely of and below the table and through an opening in the opposite side of the standard and slidably mounted in a guide bracket 26, the bar being normally urged by a spring 27 to a predetermined position with the cutter out of engagement with the plate P on the table, and said movement being limited by suitable means, such as a stop pin in the bar engaging one of its guideway supports, as at 20'. The table in the operation of trimming and grooving a plate is moved relative to the cutters in a direction from the left hand end to the right hand end as viewed in Figure 1. The grooving cutter, as stated, is normally yieldingly positioned out of engagement with the plate P on the table, and to effect automatic adjustment of said cutter toward and the grooving of the marginal portion of a plate a cam abutment member or members 28, in the present instance shown as two in number, are mounted in a dovetail groove in the side edge 1'? of the table to have adjustment longitudinally of the table with the cam abutments extending below the table and arranged with an indicator movable relative to the graduations 18 to indicate the position of the groove or grooves in the plate. As the table abutment 28 moves transversely of the end of the cutter carrying bar 23 a roller 29 carried by said bar rides over the cam abutment thereby moving the bar against the tension of spring 27 and the cutter B into engagement with the marginal portion of the plate P on the table and cutting a groove or recess 30 in the under-surface thereof. The cutters are milling cutters, the trimming cutter A having a cutting face or faces extending in a straight plane parallel to the axis of the cutter, while the grooving cutter is of conical form with the base at the outer end and whereby the side wall of the groove will be inclined to and overhang the base wall of the groove to adapt the same for the engagement of a correspondingly formed hook 31 in a block 32, (Figure 10), commonly termed as a plate securing hook, the dimension of the length of the hook and thickness of the plate being equal to type height. The depth of the groove is constant and the extent of the length is regulated by the length of the cam member 28, as shown at 33 in Figures '7 and 8. If desired a bar for engagement of the bar roller 29 equal to the length of the table may be substituted for the cam members for engagement of the bar roller 29 and thus maintaining the cutter B in engagement with the marginal portion of the plate P and cutting the groove entirely across the plate.
Gauge and guide rails or bars 34 are secured upon the table at the opposite ends, the one end of said bars being flush with the side edge 16 of the table opposed to the cutters and the opposite ends of the rails extended beyond the opposite side of the table, gauge blocks 35 of a predetermined pica width being fixed upon and extending upward from the ends of the rails 34 with the outer edge flush with the ends of the rails and edge 16 of the table opposed to the cutters. A bar 36 to clamp the plate P to the table is slidably mounted at the ends in guideways in and adjacent the outer ends of the blocks and extending at a right angle to the table, as at 37, the bar being actuated into and out of plate clamping positions by pinions 38 on a shaft 39 rotatable in the guide blocks 35 meshing with racks 40 fixed to the clamp bar, the shaft being rotated by a worm 41 arranged with a hand wheel 42 meshing with a worm wheel 43 fixed to the shaft.
As stated it is the object to trim the plates in accordance with pica measurement. For this purpose a cut gauge bar 44 is mounted on the side of the standard S to extend from one end of the standard, in the present instance the left hand end, and in parallel and predetermined spaced relation to the edge 16 of the table. The distance from this gauge bar and the inner edge of the gauge blocks 35 is of predetermined pica width or length. In the trimming of the plate the table is adjusted with the edge 16 extending parallelly of the gauge bar 44. The plate to be trimmed is then placed upon the table below the clamping bar and adjusted with its border line i leys 46, 46 fixed to the ends of the cutter shanks or cutter mountings opposite to the cutters and a pulley 47 connected by a belt 47 with a pulley 4'7 driven from a motor M. The table is then moved by the rotation of the lead screw 12 from the left to the right as viewed in Figure 1, the trimming cutter A first trimming the surplus material from the edge of the plate, and as the roller 29 on the cutter carrying bar 23 rides over an abutment 28 the grooving cutter Bis moved into engagement with and grooves I like plate a templet may be clamped to the table to determine whether or not the cutters are set to properly trim and groove the plate.
After one marginal portion of the plate has been trimmed and provided with. grooves it is placed upon the table with said edge engaging a straight edge and gauge bar 48 above the table extending between and the ends engaging guide- Ways in the gauge bars 34, said gauge bar 48 being adjustable transversely of the table in a direction toward and away from the cutters and releasably retained in adjusted position by locking members 49 engaging the guideways in the bars 34, said locking members being carried at the ends of rods 50 slidably carried by the straight edge to extend oppositely from each other, said bars being normally yieldingly urged by springs in a direction toward each other and the locking members out of engagement with the guideways in the gauge bars 34 and moved to and retained in locking position by a lever 51 a to which the rods are eccentrically connected.
The pica width or length to which the plate is to be trimmed being known the straight edge 48 is adjusted to provide an equal space between the border line gauging gauge bar 44 and straight edge 48. For this purpose the straight edge is provided with a pair of auxiliary gauge members 52 extended a predetermined distance rearwardly of the straight edge and arranged to engage over the gauge bars 34. Assuming the pica Width or length of the plate is greater than the pica width of the gauge blocks 35, there is engaged between the auxiliary gauge members 52 and the inner edge of the gauge blocks 35 filler pieces 53, 54 equal in length to the space of said auxiliary gauge from the straight edge plus the pica width or length greater than the pica width of the gauge abutments 35 when the straight edge is locked in adjusted position. The plate is then placed on the table with the previously trimmed and grooved end abutting the straight edge 48 and clamped thereto when the operation of trimming and grooving the opposite edge is proceeded with.
To trim and groove the opposite untrimmed edges of the plate the plate is now placed on the table with a trimmed edge abutting the gauge bar 34, at the left as viewed in Figure 1, when the border line of the plate is registered with I the gauge bar 44. The plate is then clamped to the table and the operation of trimming and the gauge blocks will be equal to the pica width or length to which the plate is to be trimmed. The plate is then clamped to the table and the operation of trimming and grooving of the plate is proceeded with.
Means are provided to prove that the plate has been trimmed to the proper size and properly grooved, comprising a bar 56 fixed in and extending between the gauge blocks 35 in spaced relation to the top of the table. A bar 5'7 is 5 mounted on the straight edge 48 to extend parallel thereto above and spaced rearwardly there- 'fromby brackets 58. Plate supports 59 are slidably mountedon the bar 56 to have adjustment longitudinally thereof, and-plate supports 60 are mounted on carriers 61 therefor slidably mounted on the bar 5'7 to have adjustment longitudinally thereon, the supports 60 being extended forward or" the carriers toextend parallel of the straight edge 48. The carriers 61 are releasably retained in adjusted position by yielding detents 62 and are arranged with indicators to co-oper ate with a scale on the bar 57 calibrated to pica measurement similar to the scale 18 to indicate the positions of the plate supports on said bar.
The upper ends of the plate supports 59, 60 are shaped to correspond with the shape of the grooves in the plates and to engage said plate grooves. The bar 56 is a predetermined distance from the gauge bar 44 and to prove the trimmed plate the pica length of the spacing piece 54 is of a correspondingly increased length.
In Figure 7 there is illustrated a trimmed plate and arranged with the grooves 33 for the engagement or" the securing means 31, 32 to assemble the same upon and in relation to strips of printers furniture 70 and in relation to contiguous and spaced type 71 for mounting in a chase, as shown in Figure 9.
In Figure 8 there is shown a plate having a straight edge and an arcuate edge extending through an arc of approximately 180 degrees and showing an arrangement of the grooves for the securing means therein. In the trimming and grooving of a plate of this form the straight edge is first trimmed and the grooves 33 formed therein. The plate is then secured in adjusted position on the table with the straight edge abutting the left hand gauge member 34 and the abutment 28 adjusted so that the grooving cutter will be actuated into engagement with the marginal portion of the plate and form the groove 33a. The plate is then secured in adjusted position on the table with the straight edge abutting the gauge or straight edge bar 48 and the arcuate portion with the groove 33a abutting the left hand gauge member 34 when the abutment 28 is adjusted to effect actuation of the grooving cutter to form the groove 33b. The
plate is then secured in adjusted position on the table with the trimmed straight edge abutting the gauge bar 34 at the right and the portion of the arcuate edge with the groove 33a abutting the straight edge bar 48, when an abutment 28 is adjusted to effect actuation of the grooving.

It will be obvious that various modifications may be made in construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope of the invention, and that portions of the invention may be used without others and come within the scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In means for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a pair of cutters one juxtaposed relative to the other, and a platesupporting table mounted on the standard, one of which is adjustable relative to the other, one of said cutters being supported to rotate in fixed position and adapted to normally engage and trim a marginal portion from a plate on the plate support and the other a plate grooving cutter, an adjustable support for said latter cutter to move the cutter into and out of engagement with the plate on the table and normally urged to position the cutter out or engagement with the plate, and means to effect adjustment of said support to move the grooving cutter into and out of engagement with and groove a predetermined portion of the plate while the trimming cutter is in operative engagement with and trimming a marginal portion from the plate in advance of said grooving cutter.
2. In means for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a cutter rotatably mounted in fixed position on the standard adapted to trim a marginal portion from a plate, a rotatable cutter adjustably mounted on the standard in juxtaposed relation to the trimming cutter adapted to groove the plate, a plate supporting table slidably mounted on the standard to have reciprocatory movement and relative to one edge of which table the cutters are mounted, means to clamp a plate upon the table with a predetermined marginal portion projecting from the edge relative to which the cutters are arranged, means to reciprocate the table, and means to adjust the grooving cutter to move it into and out of engagement with and effect grooving of the plate at a predetermined point in the movement of the plate with the table relative to the cutters and while the trimming cutter is in operative engagement with and trimming a marginal portion of the plate.
3. In means for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a plate trimming cutter rotatably mounted in fixed position on the standard, a grooving cutter adjustably mounted in juxtaposed relation to the trimming cutter on the standard, said grooving cutter fol lowing the trimming cutter and normally out of engagement with the plate and adapted to be adjusted into engagement with and groove a plate, a plate support mounted on the standard with one edge juxtaposed to the cutters and slidably adjustable in the plane of rotation of the cutters to effect trimming of the edge and grooving the plate by the cutters, a gauge bar mounted on the standard to extend parallel of the edge of the table juxtaposed to the cutters and with which gauge bar the border line of the plate on the table is adapted to be registered, means to clamp the plate to the table, and settable means to adjust the grooving cutter toward and groove the plate at a predetermined point in the adjustment of the plate with the table relative to the cutters.
4. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a plate carrying table slidably mounted on the standard, means to impart sliding movement to the table, means to position and clamp a plate on the table with a predetermined marginal portion projecting from an edge thereof, a pair of cutters rotatable on parallel axes and relative to one edge of the table from which a marginal portion of the plate carried thereby projects to trim a marginal portion from and groove a surface of the plate, said trimming cutter being mounted in fixed position, a carrier for the grooving cutter mounted on the standard toadjust the cutter in a direction transversely to the movement of the table to engage said cutter with and groove a surface of the plate, means to normally urge the carrier for the grooving cutter to position with the cutter out of engagement with the plate, and means to effect adjustment of the carrier for the grooving cutter at a predetermined point in the movement of the plate with the table to move said cutter into and out of engagement with and groove the plate.
5. A machine as claimed in claim 4, wherein the carrier for the grooving cutter comprises a bar slidable in the standard transversely of and the ends extending beyond the opposite sides of the table and on one end of which bar the grooving cutter is mounted, a cam abutment mounted on the side of the table opposite the cutter to have adjustment relative to a scale calibrated to pica measurement extended along said side of the table, and a cam following roller mounted on the end of the bar opposite to the cutter and adapted to ride over said cam abutment as the table is adjusted relative to the cutters and adjust the grooving cutter into engagement with and groove the plate.
6. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a plate supporting table mounted upon the standard to have longitudinal sliding movement, said table having gauge and guide rails to extend upward from and transversely of the opposite ends and vertical gauge blocks arranged at one end of said rails and the table having vertical slideways therein adjacent the outer marginal portions thereof and one longitudinal edge of the table, means to transmit movement to the table, a clamping bar slidably mounted in the slideways of the gauge blocks to clamp a plate upon the table with a marginal portion projecting from the edge of the table, means to actuate the clamping bar into and out of clamping position, a straight edge carried upon the table between the guide rails to extend longitudinally of the table and adjustable transversely thereof for gauging the plate on the table with a predetermined marginal portion to project from one edge thereof, a trimming cutter rotatably carried by the standard relative to the edge o1 the table arranged with the clamping bar and from which the marginal portion of the plate projects and rotatable in the plane of the movement of the table, and a rotatable plate grooving cutter juxtaposed relative to the trimming cutter.
7. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a standard, a plate carrying table slidably mounted on the standard, means to impart sliding movement to the table, means to position and clamp a plate on the table with a predetermined marginal portion projecting from an edge thereof, a cutter mounted to rotate in fixed position in the plane of the plate and arranged relative to the edge of the table from which a marginal portion of the plate carried thereby projects to trim a marginal portion from the plate, a second cutter, a bar slidably mounted on the standard to extend transversely below the table and at one end of which the second cutter is rotatably carried in juxtaposed to and rotatable on an axis parallel with the axis of the trimming cutter, a roller carried at the opposite end of said bar, and said bar normally urged with said roller in predetermined position relative to the edge of the table opposite to the cutter carried thereby and with said cutter out of engagement with the plate on the table, and a cam abutment mounted on the table tohave adjustment longitudinally thereof relative to the edge at which the bar roller is positioned and adapted to ride over said roller by the movement thereof with the table and thereby adjust the cutter carrying bar to engage the cutter with and groove the plate.
8. In a machine as claimed in claim 6, means to releasably secure the straight edge in adjusted position, means to effect movement of the grooving cutter into and out of engagement with the plate adjustably mounted at the edge of the table opposite to that from which a marginal portion P of the plate projects, and an indicator calibrated in pica measurement to indicate the adjustment of said latter means.
9. A machine as claimed in claim 6, wherein the means to actuate the plate clamping bar into and out of plate clamping position comprises a pair of racks secured to the bar, a shaft carrying pinions meshing with the racks and having a worm wheel fixed thereon, and a worm meshing with said worm wheel arranged with a hand wheel to rotate the worm.
10. A machine as claimed inclaim 4, wherein the means to impart movement to the tabie comprises a lead screw arranged with a hand Wheel mounted in the standard to rotate on an axis extending longitudinally of. the table and having threaded connection with a block extended from the bottom of the table.
11. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and. like plates, a plate carrying table mounted to have longitudinal sliding movement, a cutter juxtaposed to a longitudinal edge of the table and rotatable in a fixed plane adapted to trim a marginal portion from the plate, a
second cutter, means in which the second cut- 1 plate, said cutter mounting means being normally urged to position with the grooving cutter out of engagement with the plate, a straight edge mounted on the table to extend longitudinally thereof and have adjustment in a direction toward and away from the cutters and relative to electrotype plates and the like as claimed in claim 11, gauge blocks of a predetermined pica width fixed at the opposite ends of and extended inward from the edge of the table at which the .cutters are arranged, gauge blocks connected with and participating in the adjustment of the straight edge, and filler pieces adapted to be inserted between the latter gauge blocks and the fixed gauge blocks to adjust the straight edge to predetermined pica distances from the trimming cutter.
13. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype plates and the like as claimed in claim 11, gauge blocks of a predetermined pica width fixed at the opposite ends of and extended inward from the edge of the table at which the cutters are arranged, gauge blocks connected with and participating in the adjustment of the straight edge, filler pieces adapted to be inserted between the latter gauge blocks and the fixed gauge blocks to adjust the straight edge to predetermined pica distances from the trimming cutter; and adjustable means carried by the fixed gauge blocks and the straight edge for proving q the dimensions to which the plate has been trimmed and position of the grooves cut into the plate.
14. In a machine as claimed in claim 11, means for proving the dimensions to which the plate has been trimmed and the position of the grooves cut into a plate comprises plate supporting and groove engaging members mounted to have longitudinal adjustment on a bar fixed in and extending between the fixed gauge blocks, and plate supporting and groove engaging members mounted on a bar to have adjustment longitudi nally thereof carried by and extending longitudinally of the straight edge.
15. In a machine as claimed in claim 11, means for proving the dimensions to which the plate has been trimmed and the position of the grooves cut into a plate comprises plate supporting and groove engaging members mounted on a bar extended between the fixed gauge blocks to have adjustment longitudinally of the bar, and plate supporting and groove gauging members mounted on a bar to have adjustment longitudinally of the bar carried by the straight edge in parallel and predetermined rearwardly spaced relation thereto and arranged with a scale graduated in pica measurement to indicate the adjustment of the gauge members thereon.
16. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a plate supporting A table mounted to have longitudinal sliding move- 5 ment, a pair of cutters arranged in the plane of movement and at one side of the table, one of said cutters being mounted in fixed position and adapted to trim the marginal portion of a plate on the table, and the other cutter mounted to have adjustment into and out of engagement with and groove a marginal portion of the plate on the table and normally urged to position out of engagement with the plate, and a straigh edge and gauge mounted on the table to extend parallel of the side opposed to the cutters and to have adjustment in a direction toward and away from the cutters and relative to which a plate the marginal portions of which are to be trimmed m A 1and grooved is adapted to be positioned on the 110 able.
17. In a machine for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a plate supporting table mounted to have longitudinal sliding movev ment and having fixed parallel guide and gauge 118 bars extended upward from and transversely of the opposite ends and relative to which a plate is adapted to be gauged on the table, a pair of cutters at one side of and rotatable in the plane of movement of the table, one cutter being rotatable in fixed position and adapted to trim the marginal portion of a plate on the table, and the other cutter mounted to have adjustment into and out of engagement with the marginal portion of a plate on the table to groove the same and normally urged to position out of engagement with the plate on the table, and a straight edge gauge bar extended between the fixed gauge barsto have adjustment in a direction toward and away from the cutters and relative to which a plate on I the table is adapted to be gauged to position the same in predetermined relation to the cutters.
18. In a machine as claimed in claim 17, fixed gauge blocks extended upward from the guide M bars and inward from the side of the table at 1.35 which the cutters are arranged, auxiliary gauge members carried by the straight edge gauge bar in predetermined rearwardly spaced relation thereto and to overhang the end guide bars in opposed relation to the gauge blocks and between 14G- which auxiliary gauge members and gauge blocks filler pieces of predetermined length are adapted to be engaged to position the straight edge for gauging of a plate relative to the trimming cutter rd to trim the plate to a predetermined width or 14!; length.
19. In means for trimming and grooving electrotype and like plates, a slidably moimted table upon which a plate is adapted to be clamped with a predetermined marginal portion project- 150' ment with the plate, means to impart sliding movement to the table and the plate carried. thereby relative to the cutters, and means movable with the table to co-operate with the mounting means for the second cutter to adjust said means and move the cutter carried thereby into and out of engagement with the plate to efiect a predetermined grooving of the plate simultaneously with the trimming of the plate.
