Application November 4, 1930, Serial No. 493,318, and in Germany November 15, 1929 '12 Claims. (01. 240-113) Miners lamps should be made very strong and durable because of the severe usage to which they are subjected. These lamps should also be capable of being readily taken apart and reassembled. Their illumination should also be of the best and so far as possible the dark shadows eliminated so that the work may be well lighted. Also, the character of theillumination should be such as not to blind or subject the miner to severe eye strain. The lamp1should also be free from any danger of short circuit.
The present invention is directed generally to providing a miners lamp which will successfully meet the above requirements and consists in certain improvements in the construction, form and arrangement of. the several parts of the lamp which will be hereinafter pointed out and claimed. In miners lamps as heretofore produced the lower member of the lamp served as the accumulator container and was usually covered on one face with a film or sheet of lead. Lamps of this kind were, however, not safe in use because short circuits easily occurred when the lamps were subjected to rough usage. In order to avoid the above named disadvantage, one object of my invention is to provide a separate accumulator container of insulating material properly positioned within an outer container, said accumulator container being sealed by a removable cover so that access to the accumulator may be readily gained without damaging the accumulator or the container within which it is housed.
Furthermore, in miners lamps now in use the incandescent bulb is usually covered by a clear 36 or frosted glass dome serving as aprotector for the bulb. Lamps of this kind are, however, un-
satisfactory because of the liability of the'glare' to adversely affect the eyes of the miner. Another object of, my invention, therefore, is to provide a glass protector for the incandescent lamp. bulb of such a character that a homogeneous light is given off, such object being accomplished by the provision of an opalescent glass either in the form of the protector itself or in the form of a lamina therefor or in the form of a separate protector inside a protector of transparent glass.
A further object also is the provision of reflectors for the lamp so arranged as to improve the lighting efiect of the lamp and to prevent the formation of shadows thereby.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 represents the lamp in side elevation,
partly in section:
Fig. 2 represents a vertical central section taken in the plane of the line IIII of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Fig. 3 represents a glass protector of modified form.
The lower member of the lamp isshown as comprising an outer container 1 within which is located an inner container 2 for the accumulator 3. This inner container is made of some suitable insulating material. The outer container 1 is provided with an inner annular shoulder 4 which forms a seat for an outer annular shoulder 5 on the inner container, This inner con tainer is also provided with an inner annular shoulder 6 which forms a seat for a yielding gasket 7 on which rests the cover 8 for the inner container. A liquid tight seal is provided between the cover 8 and the inner container by providing a removable locking ring 9 which has a screw threaded engagement with the inner wall of the outer container and presses against the top of the cover 8. i
The upper portion of the lamp is shown as having a base 10 which has a screw threaded engagement with the outer container 1. Spaced projecting bars 11 uprise from the base 10 and 30 are provided at their tops with a canopy 12 which carries the suspension eye 13.
The incandescent lamp bulb 14 is removably secured in its socket15 uprising from a disc 16 of insulating material, the bottom of which disc is provided with conducting plates 17, 18, arranged to be brought into and out of contact with the terminals 19, 20 of the positive and negative electrodes of the accumulator 3, as the upper member of the lamp is turned on its lower member.
A glass protector in the form of a dome is provided for the incandescent lamp bulb 14, which protector is herein shown as mounted upon the disc 16. These protectors have usually been of 9 clear or frosted glass and were unsatisfactory because of the glare. To prevent this glare I have shown this protector as having incorporated therein opalescent glass. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the protector comprises an outer clear 1 or transparent lamina 21 and an inner opalescent lamina 22. These two lamina: may be unitary or separate, as desired or the entire protector may be made of opalescent glass, as indicated in Fig. 3.
To improve the lighting effect of the lamp and to prevent the formation of shadows I have provided reflectors therefor as follows: A refiector 23 surrounds the base of the incandescent lamp bulb 14 within the glass protector, which 1 The upper portion of the lamp may be held in- .its on or off position by providingtwo recesses 27,
28 in the lower member and a'spring plunger latch 29 carried by the upper member of the lamp.
It is evident that various changes may be resorted to in the .construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from ner and outer shoulders for suspending the inner container in spaced relation with respect to the-outer container, said irmer' container being of insulating material and housing the accumulator, and a removable cover disposed within the outer container for sealing the inner container.

A miners lamp including an accumulator, outer and inner containers having ccacting inner and outer shoulders for suspending the inner container in spaced relation with respect to the outer container, said inner container being of insulating material and housing the accumulator, a removable cover disposed within the outer container for sealing the inner container, and means engaging the interior wall of the outer container for tightening the cover on its container.

A miners lamp including an accumulator, outer and inner containers having ccacting inner and outer shoulders for suspending the inner container in spaced relation-with respect to the outer container, said inner container being of insulating material and housing the accumulator, a removable cover disposed within the outer container for sealing the inner container,
and aremovable locking ring having a screw,
' threaded engagement with the interior wall of the outer container for. tightening the cover on the inner container.

A miner's lamp including an accumulator, outer and inner containers, said inner container being of insulating material and housing the accumulator, a removable cover disposed within the outer container for sealing the inner container, a removable locking ring having a screw threaded engagement with the interior wall of the outer container for tightening the cover on the inner container, and a yielding gasket interposed between the cover and its container.
7. A miner's lamp including an accumulator, outer and inner containers having ccacting inner and outer shoulders for suspending the inner container in spaced relation with respect to the outer container, said inner container being of insulating material and housing the accumulator, a removable cover disposed withinthe outer container for sealing the inner container, a removable locking ring having a screw threaded engagement with, the interior wall of the outer container for tightening the cover on the inner container, and a yielding gasket interposed between the cover and the inner shoulder of its container. 8. In a miners lamp, an incandescent lamp 10c bulb, an opalescent glass protector therefor having a dome-shaped top, and a concavereflector spaced above the top of the protector and conforming substantially to the curve of the top of the protector.

In a miners lamp, an incandescent lamp bulb, an opalescent glass protector therefor hav- .ing a dome-shaped top, a cylindrical reflector surrounding the base of the bulb within the protector, and a concave reflector spaced above the top of the protector and conforming substan tially to the curve of the top of the protector.

In a miners lamp, an incandescent lamp bulb, an opalescent glass protector therefor having a dome-shaped top,'and a canopy spaced 15 above the top of the protector, the bottom of said canopy being provided with reflecting surfaces of different forms, one of said surfaces extending outwardly beyond the vertical plane of the protector.
11. In a miner's lamp, an incandescent lamp bulb, an opalescent glass protector therefor having a dome-shaped top,- and a canopy spaced above the top' of the protector, said canopy being provided with a concave central reflecting surface conforming substantially to the curve of the top'of the protector and a straight. peripheral reflecting surface, said straight surface extending outwardly beyond the vertical plane of the protector.
12. In a miners lamp, an incandescent lampbulb, an opalescent glass protector therefor having a dome-shaped top, and a canopy spaced above the top of the protector, the bottom of said canopy being provided with a lining, said lining comprising a concave central reflecting surface conforming substantially to the curve of the top of the protector anda straight peripheral reflecting surface extending outwardly beyond the vertical plane of .the protector.
