Deane, Meriden, Conn, assignor to The Miller Company, Meriden, Ccnn., a corporation of Connecticut Application October 23, 1931. Serial No. 570,533 '7 Claims. (Cl. 240-81) The present invention relates to adjustable brackets for lamps and is more particularly directed toward devices of this nature adapted for use in portable lamps, brackets, and lighting 5 fixtures.
The present invention contemplates an adjustable bracket for lamps whereby the lamp bulb and socket may be supported in various positions relative to a lamp standard, bracket or the like. Where the lamp standard is vertical, the bracket permits horizontal adjustment through a complete circle, vertical adjustment about two parallel horizontal axes, and about a horizontal axis at right angles to the parallel axes.
The accompanying drawing shows, for purposes of illustrating the present invention, one embodiment in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same. In this drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of the upper part of a portable lamp, the parts being shown in section;
Fig. 1A is a diagrammatic side elevational view of such a lamp, the adjustability of the lamp bulb and associated parts being indicated in dotted'and dot and dash lines;
Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the lamp shown in Fig. 1, parts being in section, the dotted lines indicating the adjustability about the normally horizontal axis AA of Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view to show a detail.
A lamp base is indicated at 10 in Fig. 1A. This lamp base carries an upright standard 11, the upper end of which is provided with a fitting indicated at 12. This fitting is of the type shown in my application Serial No. 483,814, filed September 23, 1930, Lighting appliances.
These fittings have a screw threaded external terminal indicated at 12a forming one side of the circuit, and a concentric element indicated at 1212 forming the other side of the circuit, and are adapted to receive complementary fittings to continue the electrical circuit. Figure 1 diagrammatically illustrates at 13 such a fitting in which the circuit is continued to two receptacles indicated at 14 and 1 5. This fitting is adapted to be screwed down on to the threaded element 12a and is knurled about the upper end as indicated to facilitate threading it in place.
A mounting bracket B is supported from the upper end of the standard. As here shown this bracket has a band 16 which is secured to a ring 17, flanged about its lower edge as indicated at 17. This flange is adapted to be received underneath the fitting 13 so that the band and ring are secured to the top of the standard 11. A bracket arm 18 is formed from two straps 18a and 18b. The inner ends of these straps are received on a bolt 19 which passes through the ends 16a and 16b of the band 16. This bolt carries a wing nut 20 and a spacer 21 so as to adjustably clamp the arm 18 to the band. The outer ends 22 and 23 of the straps 18a and 18b carry a bolt 24 on which is pivotally secured a U-shaped bracket 25 and spacer 26; A wing nut 27 is adaptedto clamp these parts together. To stifien the bracket arm, the straps 18a and 18b are secured together by a ring-like member indicated at 28. The U-shaped member 25 is secured to a strap 30 by a hollow rivet indicated at 31 so that the strap 30 can be. turned about the axis A'A.,
The ends of the strap 30 are secured to socket cover 35 as indicated. This socket cover has an eyelet 36 opposite the eyelet 31 to accommodate wires 37 to 38 so that the current can be conducted to the socket 39 supported on a-yoke as indicated at 40. This socket is adapted to carry a lamp bulb as indicated at 41.
The lower edge of the socket cover is flanged outwardly as indicated at and is apertured to receive screws indicated at 46. A'sheet'metal reflector 4'7 is secured to the socket cover 35 in any convenient manner, as for example, by means of screws 46 threaded into spacers 48 carried by the reflector stamping 47. When employed with combined lighting appliances and applicators for ultra-violet radiation, the lamp, lamp socket, socket cover and reflector may be of the form shown in my application Serial No. 570,534, filed October 23, 1931'.
In the form of construction shown the bracket B-may be'swung aboutthe vertical axis of the lamp standard as indicated by the dottedline C, Fig. 2. The arm 18 may be adjusted about the axis 19, as indicated by the dotted line D, Fig. 1A. This makes it possible to swing the lamp about a vertical axis so as to bring it, for example, to the dotted line position indicated to the left to Fig. 1A. The socket cover and reflector may be turned about axis A-A so as to bring them into any desired position as indicated by the dotted line positions EE of Fig. 2 and at the right of Fig. 1A. To prevent excess turning, which might twist the wires too much, the straps 25 and 30 are provided with stop lugs 25a and 30a. The strap'25 and parts carried thereby may also be swung about the axis of bolt 2a so as to bring them to the dotted line position indicated at F, Fig. 1A. It will, of course, be understood that, within limits, all these adjustments may be effected at one time so that the reflector may be adjusted to direct light into practically any angle.
In case the base 10 is mounted so that the fitting for the standard 11 is horizontal instead of vertical, one then has the condition, indicated at the left of Fig. 1 where the band 16 is indicated in dotted lines in the position which it would assume were the axis of the fitting 13 horizontal.
It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions, andI wish it to be understood that theparticular form shown is but one of the many .forms. Various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination, a lamp socket, a socket cover in which the-socket is secured, the socket, cover having a side .outlet for admitting wires, a strap secured to the outside of the socket cover opposite the side outlet, a supporting strapandan eyelet coaxial with the side outlet-for securing the two straps together'to permit turning of the socket cover relative to, thesupporting strap.

In combination, a lampsockeiga socket cover in which the. socket is secured, thesocket cover having a side outlet for admitting wires, .a strap secured to the outside of the socket cover opposite the side outlet, .a .U -shaped supporting strap, an eyelet coaxial with the side outlet for securing the two straps together topermit turning .of the socket'cover relativetothe supportingstrap, a bracket arm to which the endsuof the U-shaped strap-are pivotally attachedfor angular adjustment about an axis atright angles to the axis of the eyelet, and a clamp for securing the second strapin adjusted position relative to the arm.
3. In -combination,-a lamp socket, a socket cover in which the socket is secured, the-socket cover having a side outlet for admitting wires, astrap secured to the outside of-the socket cover opposite the side outlet, a U-shaped supporting'strap, an eyelet coaxial with the side outlet for securing the two straps together to permit turning of the socket cover relative to the supporting strap, a bracket arm'to which-the ends of the U-shaped strap are pivotally attached for angular adjustment about an axis at right angles to the :axis of the eyelet, a ring-like member having-lugspiw otally attached tothe other end of'the brac'ket arm on an axis parallel with the second axis, and clamps'for securing the second strap in adjusted positions relative to the :arm, and the arm in adjusted positions relative to the ring-like member.
4. In combination, a lampsocket, a socket cover in which the socket is secured, a strap secured to the side of the socket cover, a U -shaped supcuring the second strap in adjusted positions relative to the arm, and the arm in adjusted positions relative to the ring-like member.
' 5..In a lamp, the combination with a standard having-a normallyvertical axis, a ring-like member revolvably andnon-removably secured to the upper end of the standard for adjustment about said axis, a bracket arm secured to the ring for adjustment about a normally horizontal axis, a
clamp for securing the bracket arm in such adjusted position, a lamp socket, and means for supporting the socket from. their-eeend of the arm, said means includinga member pivoted to the arm on a second horizontalaxis parallel gviththe first horizontal axis, and a connection between said second member and socket whereby the socket may be turned about an axis :at-right anglesto the second'horizontal axis.
6. Ina lamp, the combination with :a standard having a normally vertical axis, av ring-like member revolva-bly and non-removably secured to the upper end of the standard for adjustment about said axis the ring-like member having extensions above and to one side of the. standard, a bracket arm secured to the extensions for adjustment about a normally horizontal axis and movable to position it across the upper end. of the standard, a clamp for securing the bracket .arm in adjusted position, a lamp socket, and means tor-supporting the socketfrom the free end of'the arm, said means includinga member pivoted to thearm on a second horizontal axis.
7. 'In .a lamp, the combination with ;a,-standard having a normally vertical axis, a ring-like :memberrevolvably and non -removably secured to the upper end of thestandard for adjustmentabout said axis, the ring-like member having upwardly and laterally :extending lugs, a 'shaftcarriedin said lugs :with its :axisat right angles to the axis of the ring-like member, a bracket arm' carriedby the shaft suspended from the shaft and adapted ,to swing from suchsuspended position upwardly past the vertical and over onto the top of the standard, a clamp on the shaft for securing the bracket arm in adjusted -position,-a short arm pivoted on the free end of the bracket arm on an axis parallel with the shaft, and a lamp socket cover secured to said short arm for turning on an axis at right anglesto the second horizontal axis.
