The invention relates to improvements in handsets of the standing type. In accordance with the present invention the dial switch is provided with a special base or mounting plate on which the components, combined into a single unit which includes said dial switch are mounted. Due to this method the individual members to be combined with the dial switch are readily and accessibly arranged thereon without exceeding the space within the casing which is limited by the diameter of the dial switch owing to the fact that the mounting space on either side may be utilized.
Another important feature of the invention is the special manner in which the necessary dial switch connections to the remaining members of the unit are made so as to avoid the otherwise required cord connections of the dial switch to the other components of the instrument.
The invention is described in conjunction with an embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Fig. 1 represents a side view of such a handset the casing of which is shown in part section.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the lower portion of the instrument shown in section and. Fig. 3 is a side view of the extracted dial switch together with the mounting base, the members fitted thereon having been omitted.
The handset shown in the embodiment, in its lower portion 1 is provided with a base upon which the handsetmay rest in normal position. A casing 2 on this base is provided to house the dial switch 3, the microphone 4 and other components to be inserted in this casing. The diameter of this casing 2 is determined by the size of the dial switch 3 and its depth by the size of the microphone 4. The upper portion of the handset forms a casing 6 which terminates in the ear cap 5 and is provided to hold the not shown receiver. The two casing portions are joined together by the handle 7 which, for the purpose of carrying the connecting leads is hollow, and are suitably made of a single piece of pressed insulating material. 1 Whereas, in the prior constructions all the members to be combined with the dial switch are mounted on the dial switch proper, according to this invention a mounting base or plate 8 is provided which is preferably made of insulating material so as to afford an adequate insulation between the members to be fixed thereon. This plate 8 is of practically the same size as the dial switch 3 and certainly not larger. It is fixed to the dial switch 3 by means of bolts 9 and (Cl. 1'l9103) brackets 10 which are joined to the set of springs 11 of the dial switch 3 and consequently are electrically connected to said springs 11. One of the sets of contact springs 12 and 13 arranged on the mounting plate 8 is connected to the terminal screws 14 which secure the bracket 10 to the base plate 8. In consequence of this construction there is no need for any cord connection between the dial switch 3 and the components on the base plate 8 since the necessary connections are made with the aid of the bracket 10. In order to gain an easy access to the connecting points all the terminal screws 14 are fixed on the side of ,the plate 8 which is turned away from the dial switch. This arrangement affords the greatest possible accessibility to the connecting points on the base plate after the cover for the casing 2 has been removed and also facilitates the exchange of connecting cords without previous removal of the apparatus.
On the side of the base plate 8 which is turned toward the dial switch 3, sets of contact springs 12 and 13 for the enquiry key and the switching springs are mounted in addition to the holding spring 15 which supports the microphone cap 4. Thecontacts consequently are well protected and yet easy of access when the whole unit is withdrawn.
The unit consisting of bracket 8 and its supported parts including the microphone, dial switch and key is held in position in the casing by means of screws. These screws can be loosenedfor the purpose of extracting the set of components as a unit after the switch member 1'7 for the dial switch has been removed. This is necessary in the embodiment shown (Fig. 2) in consequence of a perforation in its fixing screws which are inaccessible until the casing 2 has been opened. The switch member 17, however, may
also be so constructed that it may be extracted from the outside without further trouble.
The casing 2 is covered by an angular cove; 18. When inserted in its correct position the portion which covers the back of the casing fits into a slot 19 in this side whereas the other portion of the cover 18 fits over the bottom of the casing 2 and presses against it with the action of a spring. Due to this method and in consequence of the supporting surface 20 provided on the casing 2 for the dial switch 3 a tight closure of the casing 2 is obtained which prevents dust from penetrating.
As will be appreciated from the features described above it is possible in this manner to produce a telephone handset provided with a built-in dial switch which satisfies most requirements with regard to facilities for examination and accessibility of its internal members, is simple in assemstructure, a receiver casing within the upper end of said structure; and a unitary assembly, including impulse and voice transmitters, respectively, within the lower end of said structure mounted on a common detachable bracket.

In a telephone set, a self supporting unitary structure having, a receiver unit in its upper portion, a voice current transmitter unit in its base portion, and an impulse transmitter of the dial type in the base portion and with its dial facing a direction at right angles to the receiver and voice current transmitter units.

In a, telephone set, a self supporting unitary structure equipped with, a receiver unit, a transmitter unit and a calling device, respectively, and a circuit switching spring assembly for the set supported by said calling device and having an lower portion serving as a transmitter mouthpiece, having one side and the bottom of its base open for receiving an assembly including a calling device and a transmitter, and having another side of its base portion open to expose the dial of an inserted calling device to enable its operation, and a cover for the said one side and bottom of the base portion. v
