This invention relates to locks, such as combination controlled *p'adlocks, and the like article's. Anob'ject of invention is to provide a lock of the character described, having means for epcrating the combination controlled mechanism for opening the look either with or without the combination numbers being visible.
Anotherboject of invention is to provide a lock 'of the character described having improved fm'ea-n's for changing the 'con'ibina tion for said lock.
A further obfject'o'f this invention is to provide a lock of the character described which may be closed regardless of the position of "the mammt-ion omit-roiled mechanism.

The combination controlled mechanism 14 Within the casing 11 is providedwith means ffor controlling the movement of the bolt 12. To this end, a plate 40 is attached to the rear wall '18 of the casing in any suitable manner, said plate having a portion 41 extendingjat right angles to said rear wall and adjacent and parallel to the opening 22 insaid casing. A second wall '42 parallel to said wall portion 41 is fixedly mounted within said casing in any suitable manner and is disposed substantially in a plane passing through the axis of opening 20. Fixedly secured to the .wall41 in-any suitable manher, is a cylindricalsleeve 43 extending tran versely of said lock casing and having an axis in the plane of the axes of said openings 26 and 22.
Said sleeve 43 preferably terminates short of the wall 42 for the purpose hereinafter appearing. Rotatably and slidably mounted within said sleeve 43 is a shaft or bolt 44 having a portion 45 extending through anopening in wall 41 and normally projecting through said wall and terminating adjacent the flat faces 29, 35 and 31. Said end portion 45 of the shaft 44 is formed an edge portion 46 having a flat face 47 extending longitudinally of said shaft and with a ramped cammed or curved outer face 48. As shown in Fig. 6 of the drawing, said edge is adapted to extend longitudinally arm 26 of bolt 12 and projects into the cutout portion 35 of the collar 3l-a when the lock is in open position, thus permitting the bolt 12 to be drawn upwardly to disengage the arm 25 from the opening 26.
The bolt 12 may be drawn outwardly from the position shown on Fig. 2, until the collar 27 of the arm 26 strikes the under side of the shaft end 45, thus preventing complete removal of the bolt from the lock. However, upon drawing the bolt 12 upwardly, because of disengagement of the arm 25 from opening 20, said bolt may be pivoted about said arm 26 to disalign said arm 25 from said opening to permit removal of the padlook from the latch or closure to which it may be attached. This pivotal movement is permitted since the end portion 45 of the shaft 44 will extend into the groove formed by the reduced portion 28.
Means is provided for turning the shaft 44 into locking position to prevent outward movement of the bolt 12, said means comprising a Wheel 50 splined or keyed to said shaft in any suitable manner. Said wheel is preferably disposed parallel and adjacent to said wall 42 and is formed with a knurled outer surface 51 to facilitate actuation thereof. Said wheel may furthermore be provided with a pair of markings 52 such as arrows, spaced 96 degrees from each other to indicate the opening and closing positions of said shaft and the direction of movement of the wheel from one of said positions to the other.
As shown in Fig. 2, the shaft is in open position to permit removal of the bolt 12. A small coil compression spring 53 mounted in a socket 54 at one end of shaft 44 is'adapted to press against the outer wall 15 of the casing to normally retain said shaft pressed in the position shown in Fig. 2. A flanged head or collar portion 54a limits the movement of the shaft in the direction toward said arm 26. Thus, should the bolt 12 be withdrawn into the opening position and the shaft44 thereafter actuated to closing position, so that the ramped surface 48 faces upwardly and extends beneath the collar 31-a, downward pres sure of the bolt will cause said collar or shoulder 32 or ramped portion 33 to engage said ramped surface 48 and move the shaft to the right as shown in Fig. 2, against the pressure of spring 53, until the bolt is pressed inwardly and the edge portion 46 of the shaft again clears the collar 31 and snaps into groove 30 for closing the bolt. With this construction the bolt may be closed regardless of the position of shaft 44.
The wall '42 is formed with a cut-out portion to provide an abutment 55 and a second abutment 56 at right angles to said first abutment. A small set screw 57 threaded into an opening 58 in the bottom wall 21 of the wall 17, extends down- Wardly and is provided with a portion 59 parallel to and somewhat spaced from said abutment 56. A pin 66 projecting from the side of wheel 50 is adapted to abut the horizontal abutment 55 when the shaft 44 is in lock opening position and to abut the extension 59 of member 57 when said shaft is in locking position.
Means is provided for controlling the movements of the shaft 44 and wheel 50 so that the latter may be turned to open position only when the combination control mechanism 14 is set to a predetermined combination of numbers. To this end a plurality of bushings 62 are rotatably mounted on the sleeve 43. For the purpose of illustration, only three such bushings are shown for a three number combination system. Obviously, however, any number of bushings for forming any number of combination numbers may be provided. Each of said bushings 62 is provided with a sleeve portion 63 contacting the outer surface of sleeve 43, and an outwardly extending flange 64 having a radial notch 65 formed therein. For the purpose hereinafter appearing, the sleeve 63 is formed with a longitudinal curved notch or keyway 66, and the sleeve 43 is formed with an elongated groove or slot 67 substantially equal to the width of said notch. Slidably mounted on the outer surface of each of said sleeve portions 63 is an indicator 70 having an outwardly extending flange portion 71 overlying the outer surface of said flange 64. Said indicator 70 is formed with a reduced portion 73 having spaced markingst-hereon such as the ten digits 73a.
The flange 71 is preferably formed with notches 74 extending between each pair of adjacent digits and the portions 75 of said flange between said notches may be knurled, as at 76, to permit easy manipulation of said indicators. Each of said indicators 76 is formed with a countersunk portion 77 forming a wall 78 adapted to contact the inner surface of the flange 64 of bushing 62. A series of sockets 80 are formed on said inner wall 78, there being one socket alignedwith each digit 73-a. Thus, in the illustrated form ten sockets are formed equally spaced along said annular wall 78. The sockets are shaped to form '1 a portion of a sphere for receiving a portion of a ball 81 mounted within said notch 65.
It will now be understood that the ball 81 interconnects or splines each bushing 62 with its respective indicator 70 to prevent relative rotation therebetween.
An elongated pin 65 extends within the slot 67 formed in the sleeve 43, said pin having a diameter slightly greater than the width of said sleeve, and hence partially extending into the notches 66 formed in the bushings 62 when all of said notches are aligned with said slot 67.
The shaft 44 is likewise formed with an elongated longitudinal notch or groove 86 substantially similar in cross-sectional shape to the notch 66 so that when said shaft is turned to align said notch 86 with groove 67, the pin 85 will drop to permit the lower portion thereof to lie within said notch 86. When the pin has thus dropped to this position the bushings may be turned by rotating the indicators 70. It will nowbe understood that unless the bushings 62 are in position for aligning all of the notches 66 with the groove .67, movement of the shaft 44 cannot take place since the pin 85 partially extends into the notch 86 and hence looks or splines the shaft 44 to the fixed sleeve 43. 7
It will furthermore be understood that it is necessary to rotate the indicators 70 to a predeter mined position for bringing a predetermined combination of numbers to the front of the casing to the position shown at 88 for bringing the bushings 62 into the position of aligning the notches 66 with the slot 67 and hence permit rotation of the shaft 44 to the opening position shown in Fig. 2. The number to which the indicators are to be turned, depends, obviously, upon the relative position of each bushing with respect to its indicator. This relative position depends upon the socket into which the ball 81 projects. As illustrated in the drawing, there are three indicators and three bushings shown so that all three indicators will have to be moved by actuating the knurled flanges 71 to bring a combination of three numbers into view at the front of the casing for correctly positioning the bushing as above described.
Washers 89 may be fixedly interposed between adjacent pairs of bushings 62, said washers likewise being provided with notches similar to notches 66 and aligned with groove 67. Thus, when the proper combination of numbers is set the wheel 50 may be turned to the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and the bolt 12 thereafter drawn outwardly and pivoted about arm 26 thereof to open the lock. For closing the lock it is merely necessary to align arm 25 of said bolt 12 with opening 20, push the bolt back into closing position, move the wheel 50 back into closing position, as indicated, and then rotate one or all of the indicators 70 to disalign the notches 66 with the groo' e 67, thus forcing or permitting the pin 85 to drop down into the notch 86 in said shaft 44 to lock said shaft to the fixed sleeve 43. With the indicators upset, the lock cannot be opened by one who does not know the combination. It will be noted that once the relative positions between the bushings 62 and their respective indicators 70 have been determined by the positions of said balls 81, the combination cannot be changed unless such relative positions are changed. Should it be desired to prevent change of the combination after the lock has been assembled, it is merely necessary to provide means for permitting no longitudinal relative movem nt between the bushings and their respective indicators thereby retaining said members permanently interlocked, or the two members may be made in one piece.
Means is provided, however, for changing the combination to be set for permitting opening or" the lock. To this end a washer 90 is slidably and non-rotatably mounted on the sleeve 43a: one end 91 thereof. The outer face 92 of said washer is provided with a plurality of preferably equiangularly spaced notches 93, for instance three in number, and the adjacent face 94 of the wheel 50 is likewise formed with the same number of complementary sockets 95, each complementary pair of sockets substantially receiving half of a small spherical ball 96. Thus when the sockets 95 are aligned with sockets 93 the washer 90 may be longitudinally moved toward the face 9% of the wheel 50. This aligned position of the sockets may be accomplished by setting the proper combination for opening the lock and unscrewing the screw member 5! to lift the end portion of 59 out of the path of the pin 60 projecting from one face of said wheel 50. When this operation is effected the wheel 50 may be turned a small angle beyond the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing, so that the pin will contact the abutment wall 56 and bring the complementary sockets into alignment. This operation locks the bushings against rotary movement and permits relative longitudi nal movement between each pair of complementary bushings 62 and indicator 70 as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. This relative movement may be ef ected by rotating the indicators, such rotation causing sliding movement thereof to the right and moving the washer 90 toward wheel 50. Rotation of an indicator 70 will dise lodge the ball 81 from the socket 80 into which it had projected and bring the ball into alignment with. another socket 80. Thus each indicator may be moved selectively to bring a new number or digit 73-a into the position shown at 88, and hence a new combination of numbers is provided. It will be noted that only one indicator may be rotated at a time to change the combination. After a combination has been changed, rotation of the wheel 50 back to the position shown in Fig. 4 will cause disalignment of the sockets 93 with the sockets 95 and hence balls 98 will be dislodged from sockets 95 and roll up on the face 94 of the wheel 50, thus pushing the washer 90 toward the left and locking of complementary bushings indicators to one another. The screw 57 may then again be screwed to bring the end 59 thereof down into the path of pin 69. The operation of 11 5 the lock will then be the same as described above, except that the new combination of numbers must .be set to bring the look into position for permitting actuation of the shaft toopening position.
As shown in Fig. 1, the front face 19 of the casing 11 is provided with a' slot 100 through which a portion of the wheel 50 extends to permit actuation of said wheel from the outside of the casing. Said plate is furthermore provided with three T shaped slots 101 through which knurled 11,1 portions 76 of the indicator 70 extend to permit finger actuation of said indicators, and also to permit observation of the number or digit 73-a on each indicator at the position designated at 88 at the front of the casing.
Means is provided to permit setting of the combination to opening position without exposing the numbers set on the indicators, so that the lock may be opened without disclosing the combination. to a bystander.
To this end, plate 19 is formed with a small slot 102 adjacent to the upper end thereof and with a pin 103 adjacent the lower end thereof aligned with said slot 102, and extending into said casing 11. Slidably mounted on the rear 131) face 19-d of said plate 19 is a plate 104 having an extension 105 provided with a transverse pin 106 extending through said slot 102. Said pin 106 is preferably provided with a head 10'? contacting the outer surface of said plate 19. Said F35 plate 104 may furthermore be formed with an extension 108 provided with a slot 169 receiving said pin 103. It will now be understood that the plate 10% may be moved up or down. A small coil spring 110 mounted on a pin 111 projecting I .51 from the inner surface 19a of said plate 19, is formed with an arm 112 engaging the under side of said pin 106 and with another arm contacting a fixed abutment 113 for normally maintaining said plate 104 in raised position. Said plate is provided with a slot 115 registering with slot 100 but somewhat longer than said slot to permit the sliding movement of said plate 10 1. Likewise said plate is formed with three T shaped slots 116 registering with said slots 101. Each 15s 8. In a lock, in combination, a fixed sleeve, a member rotatably mounted on said sleeve, an annular member mounted on said first member, said first member having an opening, said annular member having a socket, and a member received in said opening to project into said socket, and means for locking said first member to said sleeve.

In a lock, in combination, a fixed sleeve, a member rotatably mounted on said sleeve, an annular member mounted on said first member, said first member having an opening, said annular member having a socket, a member received in said opening adapted to project into said socket, means for locking said first member to said sleeve, and means for locking said first member and annular member against longitudinal relative movement.
10. In a lock in combination a fixed sleeve, a member rotatably mounted on said sleeve, an annular member mounted on said first member, said first member having an opening, said member having a socket, and a member received in said opening adapted to project into said socket, means for locking said first member to said sleeve, means for locking said first named member and annular member against relative longitudinal movement, and means for releasing said locking means.
11. In a lock, in combination, a fixed sleeve, a member rotatable thereon, an annular member rotatably mounted on said sleeve, means for locking said members against rotary movement, means for locking said members against relative longitudinal movement, and means for releasing said last named means.
12. In a lock, in combination, a fixed sleeve, a member rotatable thereon, an annular member disposed about and rotatable with respect to said sleeve, means for locking said members together in a plurality of relative angular positions, means for locking said members against relative longitudinal movement, and means for releasing said locking means.
13. In a lock, in combination, a casing, a bolt extending into said casing, a fixed sleeve in said casing, a shaft rotatably mounted in said sleeve and disposed transversely of said bolt, resilient means for longitudinally moving said shaft toward said bolt, and combination controlled means for governing rotation of said shaft.
14. In a lock, combination controlled mechanism, comprising a fixed sleeve, a plurality of annular members mounted on said sleeve, a plurality of indicator wheels mounted on said members respectively, and means for selectively locking said wheels to said members in a plurality of angular positions, said means comprising means for locking said members and wheels against relative longitudinal movement and means for releasing said locking means.
15. In a lock, combination controlled mechanism, comprising a fixed sleeve, a plurality of annular members mounted on said sleeve, a plurality of indicator wheels mounted on said members respectively, and means for selectively looking said wheels to said members in a plurality of angular positions, said last named means including means for permitting relative rotary movement between only one member and its wheel at a time.
16. In a lock, combination controlled mechanism comprising a cylindrical member, a plurality of annular members mounted on said first member, a wheel having indicating means,
mounted on each of said annular members, and means for permitting relative rotary movement between only one of said annular members and its wheel at a time. p
17. In a lock, combination controlled mechanism comprising a sleeve, a plurality of annular members mounted on said sleeve, a wheel having indicating means, mounted on each of said members, and means for preventing simultaneous relative rotation between said members and wheels.
18. In a look, a casing, a U-shaped bolt slidably extending into said casing, and a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said casing adapted to cooperate with said bolt for locking the same to said casing in one angular position of said shaft, and release said bolt in another angular position of said shaft and means for causing sliding movement of said shaft.
19. In a lock, a casing, a U-shaped bolt slidably extending into said casing, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted in said casing adapted to cooperatewith said belt for locking the same to said casing in one angular position of said shaft, and release said bolt in another angular position of said shaft, combination controlled mechanism for governing rotation of said shaft and means for causing sliding movement of said shaft.
20. In a lock, in combination, a casing, a bolt, combination controlled mechanism Within said casing for locking said bolt to said casing, said casing having an opening therein to permit viewing the combination markings therethrough, a member movably mounted on said casing for covering said opening, resilient means for normally retaining said member in covering position, and a handle on said member protruding from said casing for moving said member to uncovering position.
21. A lock comprising a casing, a bolt having a portion slidably received within said casing, and combination controlled mechanism in said casing for locking said bolt, said mechanism comprising a sleeve fixed within said casing, a 120 shaft slidably and rotatably mounted within said sleeve and disposed at right angles to said portion, said shaft having an end portion adapted to engage said portion of said bolt, and means forming part of said mechanism, for locking 125 said shaft to said sleeve, said shaft being movable to release said bolt to permit sliding movement of said portion.
22. A lock comprising a casing, a substantially U-shaped bolt having an arm slidably and 130 rotatably received in said casing, and combination controlled mechanism in said casing for locking said bolt, said mechanism comprising a sleeve fixed within said casing, a shaft rotatably and slidably mounted within said sleeve and disposed in the plane of said bolt, and transversely of said arm, said shaft having a portion adapted to engage said bolt, and means forming part of said mechanism for locking said shaft to said sleeve in bolt engaging position.

A look comprising a casing, a substantially U-shaped bolt having a long arm and a short arm, said long arm being slidably and rotatably received in said casing, and said short arm being slidably received in said casing, and combination controlled mechanism in said casing for locking said bolt to said casing, said mechanism comprising a sleeve fixed within said casing, a shaft rotatably mounted within said sleeve and disposed transversely of said long arm, said shaft having an end portion adapted to engage said long arm in one angular position of saidshaft and to. release said bolt in another ang dar position of said shaft to permit sliding move ment. of the latter, and means forming part of said mechanism, for locking said, shaft to said sleeve.
