The front follower member B is in the form o a yrelatively heavy, rectangular plate and is interposed between the butt endV of the coupler shank and the forward or closed end of the casing 23 of the friction shock absorbing mechanism. The top' stop plate D has a main body portion 26 provided with downturned side flanges 27-27, which are secured to the inner faces of the vertical webs of the sills l0-l0. The flanges may be securedrby any suitable means, rivets being herein shown extending through said flanges and the webs of the sills. At the forward end, the plate D is providedV with a downwardly projecting, relatively thick flange portion 28, extending transversely between the sills 10--10 and forming an upper front stop member cooperating with the front follower B. The rear end face of the plate D formsV stop means cooperating with the rear follower member 20, as hereinafter pointed out. The combined stop and supporting plates E and F are disposed adjacent the front and rear ends of the mechanism, as clearly shown in Figures l and 2. The plate E extends transversely between the sills and is relatively short, as clearly shown'in Figure 2.1 At the forward end, the plate E has an upstanding, relatively heavy flange 29 corresponding tothe flange 28 of the plate D'and forming a lower front stop shoulder cooperating with the follower B. The main body portion of the plate E is thickened, as clearly shown in Figures 2 and V3, and has a transverse key slot 30 therethrough forl a purpose lrear end edge ofthe plate D and said end edge face of the plate F forms a lower stop member :in alinement with the stop member formed by the-rear end face of the plate D and cooperating with the follower member 20. Both of the plates E and F are provided with upstanding side flanges 31--3l, which engage the lower edges of the sidearms 19-19 of the yoke, thereby supporting the yoke for sliding movement. The main body portions of the plates directly support the rear follower section 26 of the yoke has a for-Y friction shell 23 of the shock absorbing mechanism, and the front plate E also supports the front follower B for sliding movement. The plates E and F are fixed to the draft sills and supported by keys 32-32, extending through the key openings 30-30 of the plates E and F, respectively. The outer ends of the keys 32-32 are supported by angle plates 33--33 fixed to the draft sills and having openings therethrough accomodating the corresponding ends of the keys. As shown in `Figure 3, the angle plates 33-33 are riveted and bolted to the bottom flanges of the sills 1li-10, the bolts extending through the same, the keys andspacing plates 34-34. interposed between the bottom flanges ofthe sills and the heads of the bolts, the bolts serving to hold the keys `against removal.
The normalposition of the parts is that shown in Figures l and 2 of the drawing, and as will be seen upon reference to these figures the inner or rear end of the friction shell is spaced some distance forwardly of the stopV faces formed by the rear end edges of the plates -D and Further, the follower 20, which is'formed integral with the yoke, is of such a height that the top and bottom portions thereof engage the rear end edges of the plates D and F, during a draft action, to restrict the forward Vmovement of the follower 20 to less than the, full compressionA stroke of the friction shock absorbing mechanism. The space between thev flanges 28 and 29 of the plates D and E is such as to accommodate Ythe coupler shank freely for movement lengthwise of the mechanism, thereby permitting compression of the friction shock absorbing mechanism to its full extent, the compression stroke of the latterV being limited by engagement of therearend'of the shell 23 with the front face of the rear follower 20.
.As will lbe evident, the friction shock absorbing mechanism and other parts of the railway draft `rigging may be readily applied and removed, these operations being greatly facilitated by the detachable'bottom plates E and F. Asv

The operationof my improved railway' draft rigging is as follows: During a draftaction, the
coupler is pulled outwardly, thereby pulling the yoke A forwardly'therewith and' compressing the friction shock absorbing mechanism C against the fro-nt follower B, which is held stationary by engagementwith the front stop members 28 and 29. The compression ofthe mechanism will continue until movement of the coupler and yoke. is
limited by engagement of the rear'follower member 20 with the inner ends ofthe plates D and. F. As will be clear, movement of the follower 20is restricted to less than the full compression stroke of the friction shock absorbing mechanism. In a puffingV action, the coupler 1s forced inwardly,
thereby forcing the front follower B rearwardly iso 4with spaceddraft sins.; of a shock absorbing the shell -23 and the follower v20 being finally limited by engagement of the rear end ofthe shell with the front face of said follower. As will be clear, this stroke is much in excess of the draft j stroke hereinbefore described. I haveherein shown and now consider `the preferred mannery of carrying out my invention, but the same'is merely illustrative and'I contemplate all changes and modifications that come within'the scope of the claims appended hereto. f I claim:
