SAFETY RA ZOR' Filed July 29, 1932 F r ank/z'n Par far 0? lain/6'5 EHar/j N V E N T 0 R5 THEIR ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 19, 1933 SAFETY nazon' Franklin Porter and James E. Harry,Chicago, Ill.
Application July 29; 1932. Serial No. 52 .008
2 Claims. (01. 30-12) r This invention relates to certain novel improvements in safety razors, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efficient in use and economical in manufacture.
To clean the blades of the safety razors now in use it is necessary to remove the blade from the clamping member. This operation subjects the user to considerable danger of cutting his fingers while manipulating .the blade off and replacing it on the clamping member. It is, therefore, an object of this invention to overcome the aforesaid and other disadvantages of the prior art and to providea new and improved safety razor which isso constructed that the blade may be readily cleaned without removing the same from its mounting and without danger of the user cutting his fingers.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the new razor in position for use;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the new razor showing the blade in position to be cleaned;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the new razor;
Fig. 4 is a view on line 4-4 in Fig. 3, partly in elevation and partly in section; i
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail view on line 5-5 in Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the blade and blade-holding member detached from each other.
In the drawing the new razor is generally indicated at 10 and includes a tubular handle 11 in which is slidably mounted a b1ade-supporting shaft member or mount 12. Provided in the handle 11 is a slot 13, and a finger grip 14 carried by the shaft member 12 works in this slot 13 to prevent rotation of the bladesupporting shaft member or mount 12 relative to the handle 11.
Formed on the outer end of the blade-carrying shaft member 12 is means for mounting the blade 17 on the shaft member 12; said means com prising a pair of spaced discs 15 and 16, and including a transverse bar 18. The blade 17 is provided with a slot 19 which is enlarged at its center to provide a circular opening 20. The
blade slot 19 is also enlarged near its ends to providetwo similar circular openings 21. To mount the blade 17 on the blade-supporting member-12 the blade is positioned toalign the slot l9 .withthe bar 18, and the opening 20 with the discs 15 and 16, whereupon the blade is pressed down over the disc 16 to dispose the discs 15 and 16 on opposite sides of the blade 17.
The new razor includes a guard member 22 which is rigidly attached to the handle 11. Provided in the guard member 22 is a groove 23 which has a circular recess 24 formed therein. At the ends of the groove 23, holes 25 are provided in the guard member 22. The bladesupporting or outer end portion of the shaft member is projcetable from the hindle 11 through a centrally located opening or hole 34 formed in the guard member 22. 1
Hinged to the guard member 22 at 26 is a clamping member 27 in which is provided a circular recess 28, and formed on the clamping member 27 or clamping studs 29. The blade 17.
being mounted on the blade-carrying shaft member 12, as described hereinbefore, the shaft member 12 is then retracted (downwardly as seen in the drawing) to position the bar 18 in the groove 23, thereby registering the holes 25 and 21; the clamping member 27 is then swung from the position of Fig. 2 to the position of. Fig. l, to project the clamping studs 29 through the registered holes 21 and 25, and to position the disc 16 in the recess 28. r
The clamping member 27'is-then latched to the guard 22 by means of a latch element 30. This latch element 30 has a bifurcated inner end portion 33 which is slidably mounted in a slot 31 in the guard member; this latch element 30 having its bifurcated inner end projectable into and out of a slot 32 formed in one of the clamping studs 29 to latch the clamping member 27 to the guard 22. 1
To clean the blade 1'7 after use, the latch element 30 is retracted and the clamping member 27 swung from the position of Fig. 1 to the position of Fig. 2, whereupon the blade 17 may be projected into the position of Fig. 2 by exerting finger pressure on the finger grip 14 which is moved into the bayonet notch 35 formed in the handle 11 at one end of slot 13, to hold The blade 17 is thus moved into a position (Fig. 2), in which it may be readily cleaned without being removed from its mounting on the blade-supporting shaft member 12 and Without danger of cutting the users fingers. The new razor thus overcomes a serious difliculty experienced in the use of the prior art safety razors and constitutes an improvement thereover.
When mounted for use, as in Fig. 2, the blade 17 is held securely in place and is prevented by the discs 15 and 16 from moving axially of the member while it is also prevented by the bar 18 from moving laterally or transversely of the member 12. 7
While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of con: struction set'forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come Within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim:
1. A- safety razor comprising a handle; a guard member mounted on the handle having a centrally disposed opening formed therein; a shaft slidably mounted in the handle and having an end portion projectable therefrom through said opening; means carried by said end portion for mounting a blade thereon; said means consisting of a bar extending transversely relative to the axis of said shaft and a pair of discs coaxially mounted on said shaft end portion one on each side of said bar; a clamping member; and means for latching the clamping member to the guard member.
2. A safety razor comprising a handle; a
guard member mounted on the handle having a V
