A boxlike section or container is thus produced, and the interior of the same is divided by-V a longitudinal partition 15 disposed between `the opposing ends 13 into al chamber 16 for the storage of pencils 17 or other articles for use in writing. The space between the partition 15 and front side 14 is divided by a cross piece 18 into a vchamber 19 designed to contain the game pieces which are herein represented as vcomprising checkers 20. For the chamber 19 we preferably provide a lid 21 which isconnected by a fiexible hings 22 to the partition 15. In the present embodiment, the lid 21 is supported by its hinge 22 and bythecross piece 18` at one end When it is moved into closed position as shown in Fig. 2. For convenience inopening the lid a finger piece The Vopen space at the right of the cross piece 18 may be utilized as a storage vspace forV a pencil Sharpener 24, a leadholding case ,25, and other articles including an eraser 26.

`From anv inspection of Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that in the construction shown, the bottom member l10.has a marginal portion 27 `which projects well beyond the opposite ends 13 and the front sidel 14. A covering 2S of any suitable material, such as fabric, imitation leather or. genuine. leather, is applied to the underneath face of the bottom member 10 `and tothe face of the Vrear auxiliary strip 12, such covering also continuing over the top of a head strip 29 mounted upon the block 1l so as .to elevate the rear side of the section and provide thereby an elevated surface or platform Whereon to restr the lid or cover for the main section, as will presently appear.. Attached to the outer edge portion of the covering 2,8 and extending upwardly across the outer edge of the marginal -the closing and opening movements -of the lid.

As herein represented, a flexible fabric hinge 35 connects the lid with the raised head strip 29, 4said fabric hinge being preferably provided with two portions 36 whichA are suitablyextended into and joined to the said head strip 29. The overlying layer 33 is provided with a relatively large cut-away portion 37 in order to provide a recess or sunken area adapted to receive therein a game board part 38 which is swingable on a hinge part 39 formed integral with the hinge 35. A piece of fabric or paper 40, having delineated thereon markings indicative of the game-in the present instance the markings representing the usual squares for the game of checkers, is applied to the bottom of the recess or cut-away portion 37 and upon the surface of the game board part 38. A finger clip 42, attached by a pivot 43, is swingable into position to engage the game board part 38 andV secure the same in its position in the recess 37. When the lid is swung into open position, as shown in Fig. 2, it will be seen that it rests upon the raised head strip and that it projects Well beyond the rear side of the main section. In order that the lid will be maintained in a horizontal position when a game is to be played, we preferably embed within the lid along its marginal portion remote from the hinge 35, anstrip weight 44. When the lid is swung into closed position to rest upon the opposing ends 13'and the front side 14, the provision of the weight within the lid along the marginal edge portion remote from the hinge 35, insures a relatively tight closing effect.

As herein represented, we may attach to the lid on the side thereof opposite to the checker square markings, a pad of plain paper 45. Preferably, the mode of detachably securing the pad consists in providing it with a backing in the form of a projecting tongue 46 which is adapted to be entered into a pocket structure 47 formed in the thickened region 48 of the game board part for the purpose of receiving such pad. `For cooperation with the strip of hookless fasteners 31 connected to the main section as -hereinbefore described, we provide upon the lid a strip of hookless fasteners 49, the carrying tape 50 of which isV joined to the covering 28 so as to extend across the outer edge of the lid. A runner slide 51 is associated with the two strips of

31 and 49 for connecting and disconnecting the same in a manner that will be readily understood.

In use, assuming that the two strips of endless fasteners have been disconnected through the movement of the runner slide 51 in the proper direction, the lid section can be swung into the open position where it rests upon and projects from the yraised rear portion of the main section, where to be maintained Vin substantially horizontal position because of the weight incorporated within the lid. With the lid thus swung into open position, free access may be had to the chambers of the main section. If it be desired to play a game, the game board part 38 is released through the disconnection therewith of the finger clip 42, and thereupon said game board part is swung forwardly until it assumes a position substantially horizontal with the lid as shown in Fig. 2. Any suitable article may be placed upon the cover 21 for supporting the game board part 38 in a position in which it will be substantially horizontal with the lid. In the present instance, the rubber eraser 26 is illustrated as being employed for such purpose. When it is desired to close the lid, the game board part is swung into its position within the recess 37 and secured therein by the linger clip 42. Thereupon the lid is moved into closed position upon the end members 13 and side member 14, thus bringing the strip of hookless fasteners 49 into proper relation with the strip of hookless fasteners 31 so that through the proper manipulation of the runner slide 51 the two strips can be secured together. The two sections when closed and secured together by means of the runner slide comprise a book-like structure which can readily be carried by school children or stowed in their school-bags.

While we have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. We, therefore, do not Wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

We claim- 1. A pencil case, comprising a container section for pencils and the like, a raised platform mounted on one transverse edge of the container, a foldable lid section hingedly attached at its central portion to the platform on the container section for movement into closed and open position thereon, said platform acting as a base for part of the lid when opened, a covering joined to said sections and having free edges adjacent the free edges of the respective sections, and cooperative interlocking means extending along the free edges of the covering, adapted to be engaged to secure the lid section closed upon the container section and to be disengaged to permit opening of the lid section.

2. A pencil case, comprising a container section having a vweighted transverse end forming one wall of the container, a marginal portion projecting from the base of said section forming a continuous lateral and front extension contiguous with the opposite marginal edges of the section and the side opposite the weighted end thereof, a raised platform on the weighted end of the section, a lid having a main member and an auxiliary overlying layer coextensive with said extension, a hinge .mounted on the inner edge of the platform in connection with the lid at a portion transversely intermediate the ends thereof to close the container section, said lid forming two superimposed parts one swingable away from the other' on the hinge into hori- VVZontal position to project well beyond the same,

and means on the lid and extension for keeping the lid over the container in closed relation.

3. In combination, an open casing having a weighted transverse rear wall with a raised platform thereon forming a rest, and a floor with marginal edges extending from the vertical and front walls of said casing, a two-piece foldable lid section having its middle portion hingedly connected to said platform whereby part of the lid Will-extend across and away from said platform upon swingably opening said section, part of the lid section acting as a cover resting across the casing, and interlocking means on the edges of the cover of the lid section and the extending marginal edges of the floor of the casing for retaining the lid section and the casing compactly together when the section is swung across the top of the casing, said casing having a plurality of sub-compartments therein for pencils and the like.
