PATENT OFFICE. 1
TYPEWRITERDESK. Clifford A. Cutler, Buffalo, N. Y. a Application June 4,1932. Serial No :15.373
4 Claims. (011312-24) My invention relates in general to typewriter desks, and in particular to a movable typewriter platform for such desks and means for. actuati such platform.
"5 The principal object 'ofmy invention has'been to provide a typewriter platform which maybe egsily actuated, requiring little power to operate Another object has been to provide a' device of In this nature which shall be simple in design and T platform in its lowered position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the top open and the platform in its raised position.
1 Fig. 3 is a fragmentary, sectional elevation,
taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. V
-For convenience, inthe drawing,I have shown only the upper part of the desk which is .provided with atop 5,a back 6, and a side wall -'7. Obviously, while but one side wall is shown, there are two, one arranged at each side of the typewriter compartment formed therebetween. The side walls 7 may, and usually are, bounded by tiers of drawers 9, one shown in a fragmentary manner in Fig. 3.
The top 5 of the desk is composed preferably of a front part 10, an intermediate part 11, and a rear part 12. The rear part 12 is permanently fastened in place and the intermediate part is hinged to the rearpart in such a manner that it may be folded upwardly when being moved to its.
open position. The front part is hinged to the is folded upwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The front part 10 carries a depending panel 13, Iwhich'may be provided with a handle 14, by
means of which the top may be easily opened.
A typewriter platform 15 is provided to which the typewriter (not shown) is secured by the usual means. This platform is supported at a point near its front end by means of front supporting links 16. One of these linksis arranged at each side of the platform and has its upper end pivotally connected thereto by means of a bearing lug 17, secured to the underside of the platform. The lower end of each of these links ispivotally secureditooneof the side walls 'Tby means of a screw 18L, A. bearing lug 201is secured to the upper surface of each of the rear corners of 'theJpIatfOrm and pivotally connecting these lugs with the bearing lugs 21 secured to the under surface of theintermediatetop part 11 are two pairsof upper rear supporting links'22- andlower rear supporting links 23. Each pair of upper and lower supporting links are pivotally connected at 24. A guiding link 25 is provided at each side of the platform and has its forward end pivotally secured to the bearing lug 20. When'the platform is inits lowered position, this guiding link is arranged so that its .upper end extends upwardly and rearwardly so that as the platform is raised to its-upper positionit will; be pushed forwardly to the position shown in Fig. 2. .The rear end of each of these links isv pivotally attached tojone of theside walls '7 by means of a pivot screw 26. A stop block 27 is preferably secured to each of the walls for engagement with the guiding'link when. theplatform is in its lowered position, whereby the weight of the platform is taken off of the rear supporting links 22 and 23. A supporting block 28 is secured at each side to the under'surface at the rear edge of the intermediate top part 11, and these blocks engage with the upper 7 rear supporting links 22 when they occupy their fully open positions and the platform is being sustained in its raised position.
When my desk is to be put into use and it is desired to raise the typewriter carried by the platform to its operative position, the handle 14 is grasped and the top is moved upwardly, the front and intermediate parts'lO and 11 of the top moving upwardly about the hinge which connects the intermediate part 11 with the rear part 12. This movement causes'the upper and lower rear supporting links 22 and 23 to take the weight of the platform and its load and serve to raise the rear end thereof. As the rear end is being raised, the guiding link is pushing the platform forwardly and the forward end is being also raised slightly by the rotation of the front supporting links 16 about their pivotal points 18. At some time during the opening movement the front and intermediate parts 10 and 11 may be folded-about one another so as to make the opening of the top. more convenient and when the intermediate part 11 has been folded back on top of the back part 12 the upper and lower rear supporting links 22 and 23 will occupy the positions shown in Fig. 2.
"When it is desired to close the desk, it is only necessary to grasp the handle 14 and pull the folding sections of the top forwardly, whereupon the platform will be lowered to its lower position, as shown in Fig. 1.
Obviously, some modifications of the details herein shown and described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the appended claims, and I do not, therefore, wish to be limited to the exact embodiment herein shown and described, the form shown "being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a typewriter desk, the combination with a typewriter compartment and a platform movable in such compartment, of front links pivotally attached to the walls of the compartment and to the platform for supporting the forward end of the platform, upper and lower rear supporting links pivotally connected together for suspending the rear end of the platform, a folding top for the desk, the upper rear supporting links being pivotally attached to the folding top, the lower rear supporting links being pivotally attached to the rear edge of the platform, anda guide link at each side of the desk, each guide link having one of its ends pivotally secured to the desk and its other end pivotally secured to the platform.
2. A typewriter :desk comprising a top formed with a stationary part, an intermediate rpart hingedly :connected to the-stationary part; and a front part hingedly connected to the intermediate part, a platform arranged below the top, front supporting links :having their .upper ends 4 pivotally secured to the underside of the platform and their lower ends pivotallyattached to the desk, an upper rear supporting link and a lower rear supporting link at each side of the desk, said rear supporting links being hingedly connected together, each .of said lower rear supporting links being pivotally attached to the rear edge of .the platform at its lower .end and each of said upper rear supporting links being pivotally attached at its upper end to the intermediate top part, and 'a guiding link arranged at each sideof the platform, said guiding link having its'forward end pivotally secured to the rear supporting links being pivotally attached to the rear edge of the platform, a guiding link at each side of the desk, each guiding link having one of its ends pivotally secured to the desk and its other end pivotally secured to the platform,
and-a stop block arranged at each side of the desk-and engageable with one of the guiding links when the platform is in its lowered position. 4. A typewriter desk comprising a top formed with a stationary .part, an intermediate part hingedlyconnected to the stationary part, and a front part hingedly connected to the intermediate part, a supporting "block arranged at each side of the rear under .edge of the intermediate part, a platform arranged below the top, front supporting links having their upper ends pivotally secured to the underside of the platform and their lower ends pivotally attached to the desk, an upper rear supporting'link and a lower rear supporting link at each 'side of the desk, said rear supporting links being hingedly connected together, each of said lower rear supporting links being pivotally attached to the rear edge of the :platform at its lower 'end and each of said upper supportingrlinks being pivotally attached at its "upper end .to the intermediate part, each of said upper rear supporting links being engageable with one of the supporting blocks when the platform is in its raised position, and a guiding :link arranged at each side of "the platform,'.-said guiding link having its forward end pivotally secured to the platform and its rearward end pivotally attached to the desk.
