'This invention relates to floor waxing devices and in particular to a type in which the wax containe'r maybe replaced with a new one when the supply of wax in the old container is exhausted.

A particular object of my invention is to so support the container and covering therefor that the same may be quickly detached from the holder in which it is positioned and is so arranged that the wax content of the container will be properly dispensed and the device may be employed for the even waxing of the floor and may be used with a minimum of efiort and time. A still further object of 'my invention is to provide in various forms, wax container holding devices in which the essential elements of my invention are incorporated and which provide an assembly of holder and wax containing member that is cheap to produce and one which may be used with refills after the initial purchase ofthe holding member.

Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without departing from the principles of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the structures shown in the accompanying drawings;

Figure ,1 is a view in elevation of a floor waxing device constructed inaccordance with my invention.

Figure 2 is a bottom plan view of the floor waxing device illustrated in Figure 1 and showingthe openings in the fabric covering surrounding the wax container.

Figure 4 is an enlarged section taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2 and illustrates the method of detachably securing the wax holding element and its fabric cover to the holding member.

In carrying outmy invention, I employ as illustrated in Figures 1410 6, a holder 5, consisting of a top piece 6 and a bottom block 7, or under piece, which is secured in any suitable manner to the top piece 6. To the top piece 6 thereis'secured in any suitable manner, the lower end B of a handle 9 through the medium of which the waxing device may be manipulated over a floor surface.

It isto be understood that in all of the forms of my invention, the handle 9 may be dispensed with, if desired, and the top piece 6 will then constitute a'hand piecethrough the medium of which the devicernay be manipulated.

Attached to the under surface of the-bettom block 7, I provide a spring steel plate 10 which is resilient, yet rigid enough tonorrnally main tain a horizontal posit-ion when not supporting the wax containerbu-t when it has awax container attached thereto, it will assume the peeition illustrated in Figure 1, the object being to make the wax container or polishing unit 1 1 bear evenly at all points on the surface to be polished and assist in extruding from the container all of the wax therein sothat thewaxing device 'may be for a maximum length of time without pro viding the same with a new polishing unit.

The ends of the spring plate 10 carry the retainers 12 which are secured thereto in any suitable manner as by rivets 1-3, for instance, and may be made of any suitable material, being, as illustrated in Figure 5, provided with a central slot or opening 14 into which is received the tongue piece 15 carried at the end of the polishing unit 11. If desired, and if simplicity makes it a preferred form, I may employ the type of retainer illustrated in Figure 6 and indicated by the numeral 16 which is provided with an undergroove 17, which in cooperation with the top surface of the plate 10, provides an opening or slot 17 in which is positioned, the tongue piece 15, one of which is carried at each end of the polishing unit 11. v

The polishing unit consists of an inner malleable metallic tube 19 closed' and bent at its opposite end as at 20 and surrounded by a flannel or other fabric cover 21, the ends of which are bent over as at 22 and secured by staples or otherwise to the tongue piece 15. Longitudinally of the bottom surface of the flannel 21, there is provided a series of openings 23. The metal tube 19 is pierced as at 24 when the polishing unit is in position for use so that the wax 25 in the tube may exude through the

openings

24 and 23 to the surface to be polished.

As a modified form of my invention, the tube instead of being completely closed'inay, as illustrated in Figure 7, be provided with the longitudinal slots 26 which are in alignment with the openings 23. Another form of my invention, as illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 in which a backing 2'7 is provided into which is inserted a handle 28, the periphery of the backing 27 being encased in a heavy felt strip 29 which is secured to the backing in any suitable manner, such as by the tacks 30, this felt preventing marring of the furniture and walls when the polishing device is employed. The backing 2'7is undercut to receive the slide 30 to which is secured, the heavy cardboard or thin wood or metal strip 31 which may be of single or double ply, the single ply being illustrated in Figure 8, while the double ply is illustrated in Figure 9to provide the necessary resilence so that the polishing unit is held flat on the floor, as illustrated in Figure 8, the unit in this instance being indicated by the numeral 32 and being constructed the same as heretofore described with the exception'that the ends of the tube and the flannelcovering 21 are secured as at 33 to the ends of the strip members 31.

In a further modified form of my invention illustrated in Figures 13 and 14, the intermediate slides 30 may be dispensed with and the strip portions 34 may be connected directly to the backing 35 in which is inserted a handle 36. It isjto be understood that the fabric covering 21 of the polishing unit provided with the openings 23 longitudinally of the bottom surface thereofthrough which the wax may exude. It will be noted in connection with the form of my invention illustrated in Figures 8 and 9 that a clip 37 made of spring steel is employed to retain the slide 30 in position in the backing 27 and when it is desired to replace the-unit or to use the same for hand operation, the spring 31" may be depressed in order to permit sliding thereover of the member A further modified form of my invention is illustrated in Figures 10, 11 and 12 in which a backing 37 is used having the side clips 38, one of which is provided with an adjusting screw 39 backing member 37, I employ a cardboard 40 having side cut-outs 41 into which fit the clips 38 to-secure the cardboard or other strip member 40 in position against the backing 47. polishing unit comprising the metallic tube and fabric covering, as indicated by the numeral 11 is employed in connection with strip member 40 and be secured thereto through the medium of the staples 42 at the end and while it is not shown in this construction, any form of opening may be employed in the tube and in the fabric covering to carry out the purpose of my invention.

It is evident, therefore, that I have provided a simplified polishing member which permits of use directly by the hand or use after the manner of a mop in which the. polishing unit is pushed along the floor through the medium of a suitable extended handle so that the person using the same does not have to get down on the floor on the knees. With the hand implement, furniture and flooring may be polished and I have made it possible to use a refill member consisting of a Wax holding tube and cover therefor which may be thrown away when emptied and be replaced by another full tube, the openings in the bottom of the fabric cover acting asaguide to point out the locations of the places Where the tube is to be pierced and the sealed metallic tube or container preserves the wax in proper shape until it is needed. The metallic leaf spring or strip member may be heavy enough to properly support the polishing unit and to maintain the same in shape so that even wear thereof is made possible as well as even distribution of the wax along the surface to be polished.

It is evident, also, that I have provided a polishing implement which is simple in construction, may be made at small cost and with a resultant saving to the consumer. Also the simplified construction of my device provides for the easy replacement of the polishing unit when they same has become empty and the whole structure providesa self-contained polishing implement which is easy to manipulate and supplies the wax as needed to the surface to be polished.

Because of a certain amount of flexibility in the strip 10, a limited amount of rocking movement of the presser head 7 against the cartridge 21 will be produced by the pushing of the implement back and forth and the frictional resistance developed between the pad 11 and the floor.

My invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction shown since various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of the invention or sacrificing the advantagesderived from its use.

What I claim is:-

1. A polishing device comprising a supporting member, a flexible strip having edge cut-outs therein, -clipson said supporting member for engaging thestrip in said cut-out portions, and 'a polishing unit secured to said strip.

2. A polishing device comprising a flexible member, sockets secured to the ends of said flexible member, and a polishing device the ends of which are provided with fingers insertible into said sockets when the flexible member is flexed.

3. In a device for spreading plastic surfacing material, a collapsible container of liquid impervious flexible substance in which a body of said material is enclosed, a fabric envelope extending around said container'and including an apertured region lying against a longitudinal face of said container and formingaworking face for en- The usual.

from which said envelope and'containerl are suspended, arranged to apply pressure to that'side of the container which is opposite said working face, and a handle on which said presser head is carried, whereby said container may be applied to the surface under treatment through the medium of only said envelope, with its aforesaid longitudinal face lying parallel and close to said surface, and will extrude its contained materialunder pressure developed by back and forth movement applied to it through the medium of said handle.

In a device for spreading plastic surfacing material, a collapsible container of liquid impervious flexible substance in which body of said material is contained, a distributor member ex tending around said container and including an apertiued region lying against a longitudinal face of said container and provided with a working face for engaging a surface to be treated, a presser head from which said distributor member is suspended, arranged to apply pressure to that side of the container which is opposite said working face, said container being suspended in said di tributor, and a handle on which said presser head is carried, whereby said container may be applied to the surface under treatment through the mediiun of only said distributor, with its aforesaid longitudinal face lying parallel and close to said surface, and will extrude its contained material under pressure developed by back and forth movement applied to it through the medium of said handle.

6. In a device for spreading plastic surfacing material, a collapsible container of liquid impervious flexible substance in which a body of said material is contained, a distributor member extending around said container and including an apertured region lying against a longitudinal face of said container and provided with a working face for engaging a surface to be treated, a presser head from which said distributor member is suspended, arranged to apply pressure to that side of the container which is opposite said Working face, said container being suspended in said distributor, and a handle on which said presser head is carried, said container being mounted so that back and forth movement transmitted to it from said handle will, in conjunction with resistance developed by the frictional contact of said working face with the surface under treatment, result in a certain amount of rocking movement of said container relative to said presser head.

7. In a device for spreading plastic surfacing material, a collapsibie container of liquid impervious flexible substance in which a body of said material is enclosed, a distributor member extending around said container and including an apertured region lying against a longitudinal face of saidcontainer and forming a working face for engaging a surface to be treated, a presser head in engagement with that side of the container which is opposite said working face, arranged to apply pressure thereto, and a member from which said presser head is suspended adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator, whereby container may be applied to the surface under treatment through the medium of only said distributor, with its aforesaid longitudinal face lying parallel and close to said surface, said member being connected to said presser head in such manner that back and forth movement of the device over a surface, applied to it through the medium of said member will cause said container to extrude its contained material through said apertured region.
