Within the cylinder 5 there is mounted a relatively long piston body through which extends a rod 21, the forward end of which passes through the opening 9 of the plate 8 and carries the head 22 which is located iii the tubular extension 10 and between the resilient arms 16. The other end of this rod 21 passes through the opposite end plate 7 and is secured in the upturned angu lar extension 23 of an actuating rod 24 which is reciprocably mounted in the supports 25 at the under side of the table 1.

Upon the top of the table there are mounted two supporting members each of which isindi- J cated by the numeral 32, the tops of which are 7 suitably formed to support thetube 33 employed by'glass blowers and known as a punty. This tube is employed for picking up a ball of glass and for blowing air into the ball to form the same into "a. bulb. 7 p e In the operation of the present machine a suitable bulb is formed upon the end of the punty 33 in the usual manner and the punty is then disposed across the upper ends of the supports 32 in "the manner illustrated. Thesupports 32 are at the proper height to locate thelongitudinal center of the punty upon the longitudinal center of the tubular extension 10 and the cylinder-5 so that when the punty is shifted longitudinally a toward the point 11 this point willenter the center of the bulb. The movement of the bulb is continued until it is brought into position against the head 12. The forward end of the former member 19 will also enter the bulb.
After locating the glass bulb in the manner described the foot lever 28 is depressed so as to cause the rod 21 and head 22 to move forwardly and. expand the arms 16 and consequently separate the tapered forward ends thereof and the cylinder 5 and parts carried thereby is also re- 'tated so that as the pointed ends of the arms are separated they will smooth out the interior of the bulb against the inner face of the ring 15 and thus form the cylindrical base portion 35 of the, lamp chimney. Continued forward movement of the head 22 will bring the same into contact with the rear end of the oscillatably mounted former 1'9 and cause the free forward end to be swung outwardly to extend beyond the for- .ward edge of the sleeve 15 and consequently press a portion of the glass bulb outwardly. After the former 19 has been moved'to this position it will be readily apparent that upon continued rotation of the cylinder and the'parts carried thereby which includes the former and the arms 16,
the end of the former will move about the interior of the bulb and cause an outwardly pressed bead to be formed thereabout at the upper end of the straight cylindrical heel portion formed by the arms 16.
The lower part of a chimney is shown in position upon'the forward end of the tubular part 10 of the machine and is indicated by the numeral 34, the cylindrical base part being indi-' catedby the numeral 35 and the bead by the numeral 36.
From the foregoing it will be seen that in a machine of the character herein described the base and bead portion of a lamp chimney may be easily and quickly formed and the base will be a perfecteircle and of even thickness throughout.
By mountingthe rod 21 upon the reciprocable, piston body 20 the rod is caused to move forwardly without deviation from the longitudinal center of the tubular extension in which the head at the forward endthereof moves and as will also be readily apparentupon the release of the foot lever the spring-26 will operate to retract the rod 21 so as'to permit the tapered ends of the resilient arms 16 to resume their former positions.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:'' I
l. A base forming device for a lamp chimney, comprising an annular body into which a glass bulb is inserted to be shaped into the chimney base, means coacting with the annular body forshaping the inner surface of the lamp base, said annular body and said means being rotatable, means pivotally carried by and normally projecting from the annular body for engaging the interior of the glass bulb to shape an outwardly pressed bead therein upon the rotation of the body, and means operating to first actuate said first means and then swing said pivotally carried means into operative engagement with the bulb.
2. A machine for forming a cylindrical end upon a plastic bulb of glass from which a lam-p chimney is formed, com-prisinga cylindenmeans for rotatably supporting the same, a tubular extension at one end of the cylinder, a 'rod extend-- ing axially through-the cylinder and having a head at one end located in said tubular'exte'ns ion, an annular former member secured ;to"and coaxial with the tubular extension, a plate closing an end of the former member and constituting a head for the end of the tubular extension, said plate having a slot therein, a pair of arms disposed within the tubular member and arranged in outwardly convergent relation-and having the convergent 'ends 'extending through the slot in said plate, the head of saidro'd' whe'n shifted toward the outer end of the tubular extension separating the convergent ends of said arms, means reciprocablelwithin the cylinder for-carrying said rod, means for'effectingthe reciprocation of the rod and the head carried thereby, and an elongated finger member oscillatably secured to said 'plate'and having one end extending beyond the annular-former member, 'thesaid head of the 'rod being designed to *oscillate said finger to extend the said end thereof outwardly radiallyof the annulus for the formation or an out-pressed bead in the wall of the glass bul-b fromwhichfthe iamp chimney is shaped.
