Referring now to the drawings, 10 is a bed plate on which is mounted a frame comprising standards 11 and longitudinally extending beams 12 provided with grooves 13 as indicated in Figs. 4 and 6 and in which are received a platen 14 on which is mounted an intaglio-engraved-plate 15. The beams are connected by a cross plate 12a.
The shaft 16a for the impression roll 16 has its bearings in blocks 17 which are preferably yieldingly mounted on compressionsprings 18 lov cated in recesses 19 in the frame of the machine.
The blocks 17 are vertically adjustable by cap screws 20 as best shown in Fig. 6. The impression roll (see Fig. 14) is provided on its'periphery with a recess 21 to form what is commonly known in the art as a D-roll. The cutaway portion of the roll in machines of this character is located at vthe lowermost portion thereof when the platen carrying the printing plate passes beneath the same towards the feeding end of the machine. n
It will be understood that the platen carrying the printing plate is reciprocated back and forth from the end of the machine where the ink is applied to the feeding end of the machine. .As the actuating mechanism for the platen constitutes I no part of my present invention and is well understood in the art, and any well-known form of mechanismtherefor may be employed, 1 have not illustrated the same. It will also be'undersuood that suitable inking, wiping, and polishing mecha anisms are also used, but as these elements likewherein the impression roll is inthe position where the cutaway portion is located at the lowermost portion of the roll as indicated inl Fig. 7, the roll is rotated from this position in a clockwise direction to the position indicated in dotted lines, as Viewed in Fig. 7, by a cam 22 mounted on a shaft 23. The shaft is in turn actuated by a gear wheel 24 indicated in dotted lines in Fig."5 which meshes with a gear 25 mounted on a shaft 26 and which is driven by a bevel gear 27 meshing with a bevel pinion 28 on a drive shaft 29 having a bearing at 291.
rIhe cam member 22 engages a roller 30 mounted within an intermediate portion of an arm 31 on a shaft 32, the arm being pivoted as at 33. A link 34 is pivoted at its lower end to the end of the arm 31 While the upper end thereof is pivoted, as at 35, as best shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 to a collar 36 secured to a sleeve 37, (see Fig. 6), loosely surrounding the shaft 16a of the impression roll. On the sleeve 37 is also secured the plate or disc 38 on which is pivoted as at 391, a pawl 39 which engages a tooth 40 on a sleeve 41 secured to the shaft 16a of the impression roll. When the cam 22 engagesv the roller 30, the arm 31 is rotated counter-clockwise, the link 34 is raised and through the described connections rotates the plate 38 and its pawl and thereby rotates the impression roll. The parts are so geared and timed as to cause the foregoing operation to bring the portion ofthe impression roll adjacent to the cutaway portion 21 directly below the axis of the roll as indicated in Fig. 14.

This mechanism comprises a lever42 pivoted at 421 which is preferably operated manually by a bar 44 passing through a guide 45 and provided at its outer end with a hand wheel 105 46. The opposite end of Ysaid bar is pivotally connected to one end of the lever 42, the lower end of said lever being provided with a roller 43.
When the lever 42 occupies the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 7, the roller 4s is 110 out of the path of the pawl v39 and does not interfere with the operation of theV impression roll. If the operator desires to prevent the operation of the impression roll by the cam member 22, the lever 42 is placed in thevertical full line 115 position indicated inV Fig. 7, and the roller 43 is then in the path ofthe outer end of the pawl 39, and moves the pawl to the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 7 Where it is out of engagement with the tooth l40, thereby preventing the cam member-22 from actuating the impression roll. y v
My invention provides a unit which is, in the embodiment iliustrated, in the form of an endless vcarrier which comprises an element which takes possession of the paper while the latter is in the vfeeding position, and retains possession of said paper during the printing and until the paper has left therprinting unitv which comprises the intaglio-engraved-plate and the impression roll. This carrier comprises sprocket chains 47 at opposite sides of the machine and as these chains and the associated parts are the same at each side of the machine, the description of one will suffice for both. rhe sprocket chain engages 3135 sprocket 48 secured to the end of the impression roll asbest shown in Fig. 6 and also passes over sprockets 49 and 50 located above the impression roll and -mounted in the frame as indicated in Fig. 1. The chain also passes over a sprocket 51 140 located adjacent to the feeding device indicated generally at 52. The parts are so designed that the chains 47 move at the same speed as the surface speed of the impression roll.
The feeding device comprises a feed board 53 and a gauge 54 `against which the edge of a sheet of paper which is to be printed is laid. While I have illustrated a device for the manual placing of sheets of paper in the possession 'of 'said feeding, printing and delivery mechanism, it 353 11,934,881 will be understood that the placing` of -said paper in thev possession'of said unitr ma'yl be manually vor .mechanically intermittently performed.
In-accordance with myinvention, the-carrier comprises an element, constituting a plurality' `of such elements,` which successively take possesand which is indicated generally at A, (see Figs. f1-0 and' 12), comprises a pair of bars 55 and 56,

The object of `resiliently mounting the beveled member or cam 102 isto prevent the plunger 98 from binding in the event it does not register with the recess 66 in head 57. It is obvious that the head 57, being mounted and carried by the chains 47 will'not be ina position to be held by the plunger 98 in the sprocket 48 until the portion of the chain 47 carrying the head 57 engages the sprocket and brings the recess 6G opposite plunger 98. 'Because of the fact that the chain approaches the sprocket at an angle depending on the relative positions of sprockets 48 and 51, the plunger 98 will not be in a position to engage the recess 69 until they substantially coincide on the line normal to the line of tangency between the chain and the sprocket. Obviously, a rigid cam would tend to push plunger 98 into the recess 66 before this point was reached, thereby causing the two elements to bind which might From the foregoing it is obvious that the possibility of such a result has been eliminated by my invention.
The gripper element A is received in the recess or cutaway portion 21 of the impression roll as best shown in Figs. 4 and 14.
I have described the means by'which the impression roll is rotated from the positionwhere the cutaway portion 21 occupies the lowermost portion of the roll, to the position indicated in Fig. 14 where the impression roll is ready to be engaged by the intaglio-engraved-plate 15 on the platen 14. At this time, it will be understood that the platen carrying the plate 15 has been moved to the right of the impression roll, and the gripper element A is now located within the cut-A 21 of the impression roll, and has away portion retained its possession of the paper from the time that it took possession of the paper at the feeder in the manner previously described. The platen 14 and the intaglio-engraved-plate 15 carried thereby are now moved to the left as Viewed in Fig. 14, and the intaglio-engraved-plate engages the sheet of paper, the friction between the p parts being sulicient to cause the intaglio-engraved-plate to rotate the impression roll, which rotation continues until the intaglio-engravedplate has left the roll. f

plate is rotating the impression roll, the gripper element-A continues its possession of the sheet of paper and retains its possession until the paper is released at the delivery position. After the intaglio-engraved-plate has left the impression roll, means are provided forA continuing the rotation of the roll by the driving mechanism until the cutaway portion of the roll arrives at the lowermost position, a few degrees counter-clockwise of the position shown in Fig. 14. The mechanism for positively actuating the impression roll at this time is best shown in Figs. 9 and 18 and comprises a friction rol1 107 mounted on a shaft 108 on which is also mounted a sprocket 109 which is engaged by a sprocket chain 110 passing Y over a sprocket wheel 111 on the drive shaft 26. At the time that the intaglio-engraved-plate leaves the impression roll, a carnmember 112 mounted on a head 113 engages the friction roll 107, so that the friction roll continues the rotation of the impression roll, the cam member 112 being of suicient length to rotate the impression roll to the position where the cutaway portion 21 is locatedV at the lowermost portion of the roll. Whenthe impression roll arrives at the desired position, a segment 114 of a ring which is secured to the head 113 and which is preferably provided with square ends as best shown in Fig. 9, engages a yieldingly mounted plunger 115 which is urged upwardly by a spring 116 mounted in a recess 117 formed in one arm 118 of a lever, theother arm 119 of which is provided with a roller 120 which is actuated by a cam member 121 mounted on a counter shaft 122.
The parts are so timed that the plunger 115 engages one end of the segment 114, as indicated in Fig. 9, at the time that the impression roll is brought to its nal position where the cutaway portion occupies the lowermost portion of the roll. A detent 123 forming one arm of a bell crank in the specic embodiment illustrated and pivoted at 128 is caused to engage the opposite end of the segment 114 in order to prevent rebound of the impression roll. The detent is urged to the position indicated in Fig. 9 by a coil spring 124 located in a recess 125 of the frame, the coil spring engaging the lower end of the recess and a plunger 126 engages the other arm 127.
When the impression roll has been positioned in the described manner the continued rotation of the parts causes the cam 121 to leave the roll 120, and a spring 129 surrounding a bar 130 causes the arm 119 to be moved to the left, as Viewed in Fig-9, and the plunger 115 to be moved away from the segment 114 and thereby release the impression roll for thenext succeedingrmovement. One end of the spring 129 engages a stationary part or guide 131 for the bar 130 while the opposite end thereof engages an adjustable nut 132.
A conveyor, indicated generally at B, on which the paper is delivered printed side up is also provided. This conveyor, which moves transversely of the first carrier, may, if desired, comprise a plurality4 of independent endless flexible belts 133 formed of suitable material such as stout cord which pass over' an actuating roll 134 and an adjustable idle roll 135. The roll 134 is actuated through suitable gearing in a casing 136 as best shown in Fig. 1 by means of a pulley 137 engaged by va belt 138 the lower end of which. after passing over suitable idlers v139, engages a The milled roll 142 engages a milled member 143 mounted on the shaft 23. The movement of the conveyor is intermittent'and is so timed withvreferenceto the movementl or"r the,carrier,ithatb it -is at a dwell at the time lthe paper is 4released bythe gripper bars and dropped thereon.

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, at bed printing press, an` intaglio-,engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith, a unit comprising an element forholding Va sheet of paper, means Vfor causing said element to take possession of said paper prior tothe taking-oigan impression, said element retaining-possession of said. vpaper during the taking of said impression be-v tween said impressionroll and said intaglio-engraved-plate, and aitersaid paper has left said` intaglio-engraved-plate and said impression roll, saidelement moving at the samey speed as they suriace'speed of said impression roll, a .paper receiving device, and associated means for delivering the paper from said unit to said paper rec eiving device printed side up. M 2. In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed printi ing press, an intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith, a paper feeder, a unit movable with said impression roll and comprising an element for taking possession of said M paper while in said feeder, said element retainl ingpossession of said paper during the taking of an impression and after said paper has leftl said intaglio-engraved-plate and said impression roll, said element moving at the same speed as H N the surface speed of said impression roll, a paper receiving device, and associated means for delivering the paper fromY said unit to said paper receiving device printed side up.

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed printing press, an intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith,a paper feeder, a unit movable with said impression roll and comprising an element for taking possession of a sheet of paper While in said feeder, said ele- V, ment retaining possession of said paper during l the taking of an impression and after said paper has left said intaglio-engraved-plate and said impression roll, ksaid element moving at the same speed as the surface speed of said impression roll, .a conveyor, and means coacting with said element for delivering said paper therefrom to said carrier printed side up.
' 4. In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed printing press, a printing unit comprising an intagliof A,engraved-plate and an impression roll cooperat- `ing therewith, said impression rollv being provided with a peripheral recess extending longitudinally thereof, a carrier having a portion located above said impression roll and provided with an element for taking possession of a sheet 40 of paper, cooperating means for causing said element to take possession of said paper prior to an impression, said element being so formed as to be received in said recess and pass between` said impression roll and said intaglio-engravedplate, and retaining possession of said paper while receiving the impression and until said paper has leftsaid unit, the speed of said carrier being the same as the surface speed of said impression roll, and associated means located above said im- -pression roll for causing said element to release and deliver said paper printed side up.

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flatbed printing press, a feeding, printing and delivery unit comprising an intaglio-engraved-plate and an impression roll cooperating therewith, said impression roll being provided with a peripheral recess extending longitudinally of said impres-` ated means located above said impression rollV for causing said element to release and deliver `said paper on said conveyor printed side up.

In an` intaglio-engraved-plate, at bed printing press, a feeding, printing and delivery unit comprising an intaglio-engraved-plate andy an impressiony roll cooperating therewith, said impression roll being provided with a perphffl recess extendinglongitudinally thereof, an endless-carrier providedY With an element fortaking possession of a sheet of paper, cooperating means for causing said element to take possession of said paper prior to an impression, said element being so formed as to be received in said recess and pass between said impression roll and said intaglio-engraved-plate while retaining possession of said paper, a conveyor, and means for delivering the paper from said carrier to said conveyor printed side up.

In an intaglio-engraVed-plate, flat bed printing press, a flat bed intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith, an endless carrier driven by said impression roll at the same speed as the surface speed of said impression roll, said carrier ycomprising an element for taking possession of a vsheet of paper prior to an impression' and continuing its possession of said paper during said impression and until it has left said intaglio-engraved-plate, a conveyor, and means for delivering the paper from said carrier to saidconveyor printed side up.

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed printing press, a at bed intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith and provided with a recess, an endless carrier actuated in unison with and at the same speed as the surface speed of said impression roll, said carrier comprising an element lfor taking possession of a sheet of paper prior to an impression, said element being received in said recess and retaining its possession of said paper during said impression and until it is free of said ntaglio-engraved-plate, a conveyor, and means for delivering the paper from said carrier to said conveyor printed side up.

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, iiat bed printing press, an 'intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith, an element for taking possession of a sheet of paper, means for causing said element to take possession of said paper at an exactpredetermined portion thereof, means for again exactly positioning saidelement vimmediately prior to the impression on said paper, said element retaining its possession of said paper during the said impression and until said paper has left the intaglio-engraved-plate, said element moving at substantially the same speed as the surface speed 125 of said impression roll, a conveyor, and means for delivering the paper from said carrier to said conveyor printed side up.v v

In an intaglio-engraved-plate, fiat bed printing press, an intaglio-engraved-plate, an impression roll cooperating therewith and provided with a peripheral recess extending longitudinally thereof, a paper feeder, a movable element for taking' possession of a sheet of paper, means forlcausing said element to take possession of said paper while in said feeder, said elementvbeing received in said recess of said impression roll and passing between said impression roll and said intaglio-engraved-plate while retaining possession of said paper, means for 140 exactly positioning said element with respect to said feeder and means for again exactly lposi-V tioning said element with respect to said impression roll and immediately .prior to said impression, whereby said element takes possession 145 of said paper and said impression is made at exaotpredetermined portions thereof, said element moving at substantially the same speed as the surface speed of said impression roll.
11, In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed 150 printing press, a feeding, printing and delivery unit comprising an intaglio-engravedplate and an impression roll cooperating therewith, said impression'roll being formed on its surface With a recess, an endless carrier comprising an element to take possession of a sheet of paper prior to an impression and kretain possession thereof during said. impression, a conveyor located above said impression roll, the said carrier inverting said paper during its movement to the upper run of said carrier, and associated means for releasing said paper while being moved by the upper run of said carrier, whereby said paper is delivered to said conveyor printed side up.
12. In an intaglio-engraved-plate, flat bed being received in said recess during an impression, means for registering said elementwith respect to said impression roll during an impression, means for continuing possession of saidv sheet of paper until delivered with its printedl side up.
