Similar characters of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
This invention employs four shiftable blocks of special shapes for each of the four crossings of the rails. These blocks are shiftable automatically by the flanges of passing wheels. The flange of a wheel shifts two of the blocks and the shifted blocks shift the other two blocks. The blocks form parts of the treads for the wheels and the flanges of the wheels project far enough in advance so that the blocks are shifted inplace for the treads before the treads run on the blocks.
The drawings show blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 and a quadrangular frame 9 is rigidly mounted on a 7 base 5 for preventing displacement of the blocks. The holdingframe 9 has passage ways forthe four approaches of the wheel flanges and for the four exits of the wheel flanges and the holding frame 9 has its central part cut awayto form 7 the block assembly space 23. The holding frame has portions 5, 6, 7, and 8 which form partsof the treads for the wheels. The treads of the wheels roll 011- of the rails 24 onto the portions 5,
s, '1, and s. The blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 have raised triangular portions 10 which cooperate with the surfaces 5, 6, 7, and 8 to complete the rail treads across the crossings. The blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 have base members l3 which project under and support the surface members 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the holding frame 9. The blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 are supported and slide on a base plate 5' which may be made'rigid with a bed plate 22. The
blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 have beveled approaches 11 to act as guides for the wheel flanges to start in between two blocks. These beveled approaches are at all four approaches'of the wheels. The under-cuts in the members 5, 6, '7, and 8 for the members 13 of the blocks are shown at 25. The wheel flange 32 actuates the blocks 1, 2, 3, and 4 and the flange members 13 are projected under the members 5, 6, '7, and 8 as far as the boundtuate another block. Disks 15 and 16 are ro- 'tatably mounted on anupr'ight spindle 28. The
peaks of the blooksil, 2, 3, and 4 are under-cut so that the disks 15 and 16 will project slightly thereunder. Recesses 19 are formed in the blocks 1-4 and the disks 15 and 16 have lugs no holding frame.
17 and 18 which are adapted to project into the recesses 19. By such construction, when one of the blocks 1-4 is actuated, it will actuate another block automatically. Consider Figs. 3 and 5. The lugs 18 occupy the recesses 19 in blocks 2 and 4 and the lugs 17 occupy the recesses in blocks 1 and 3. If the wheel flange 32 enters at the b'ottom of Fig.3, the blocks 3 and 4 will be spread by the flange 32. The block 3 by reason of the recess 19 will move the lug 17 and the lug 17 on the opposite side of the disk 15 will actuate the block 1 and the block 4 by reason of the recess 19 therein will actuate the lug 18 and so actuate the disk 16 and the disk 16 by reason of the lug 18 on the opposite side of disk 16 will actuate the block 2. All four blocks 1-4 will be spread for the passage of the wheel flange 32 and simultaneously the tread surfaces 10 will be brought in line with surfaces 6 and 7 to complete continuous track surfaces for the tread of the. passing wheel from the rails 24 or from the rails 20 and 21. Similar operations take place when a wheel flange enters any one of the approaches to the crossing and strikes the beveled surfaces 11 of the blocks 1-4.
In these operations the blocks 1-4 are guided by the flanges 13 moving along the boundary walls 14 within the cut-outs or spaces 25 in the main frame 9, and also by the portions 10 of the blocks moving against the edges of the tread supporting members 5, 6, 7, and 8 of the main The arms 27 are limited in movement and stop against the abutments 29 of the main holding frame 9. The blocks 1-4 have lips 31 which move against or along the sides of an abutment 30 which is rigid with the bed plate 5. The flanges of the wheels tend to force the blocks 1-4 outwardly and the abutment 38 and the lips 31 serve further to prevent inward movement of the blocks 1-4. The abutment 30 thus serves as an additional guide for the blocks 1-4. The guard rail 33 is a necessary element in the operations of the crossings. The guard rail sections abut against the main holding frame 9 in the same manner as the rails 24. The main holding frame 9 is secured to the base plate 5 by bolts 34 and nuts 35.
