This invention relates to a stretcher for supporting a person in a reclining position upon an automobile and has for the primary object, the provision of a device of the above stated character which is adapted for installation on either running board and one of the fenders of the respective running board of the automobile so that a person may be placed thereon in a reclining position and transported rapidly and safely to a hospital thereby providing a device especially adapted for use on automobiles employed for emergency calls and may form standard equipment thereto and when folded or collapsed will not interfere reference is to be hadto the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation illustrating an au tomobile with a stretcher applied thereto and constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the stretcher in a folded position.

Figure 3 is a similar view showing the stretcher positioned to retain the person thereon during transportation of the person to a desired place.

Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective View illustrating a construction of hinge employed in connection with this invention.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a stretcher constructed for application to a running board 2 of an automobile 3 with a portion resting upon the front fender 4 of the automobile and when folded occupies a 55 position whereby the doors 5 of the automobile the'automobile is in motion and also protect the person from wind caused by the motion of the automobile.
The stretcher consists of a baseboard or member 6 bolted or otherwise secured to the running board 2 with cushion elements 7 interposed between the board 6 and the running board. It is preferable that the board 6 inclines upwardly towards the front fender 4 so as to support a person in a slightly inclined position. The board 6 has a sec tion 8 extending over the fender i disposed at a greater inclination than the remaining portion of the board 6 to form a head rest and may be suitably secured to the fender 4.. Overlying'the board 6 and removable therefrom is a sack-like member *9 constructed of water-proof material capable of withstanding considerable strain in which the body of the person may be positioned or placed providing a covering or protection to the person and also a medium for lifting the person from the stretcher.
A side panel 10 is hinged to the edge of the board 6 next to the body of the automobile and is provided with straps 11 to engage hooks or like fasteners 12 on the side of the automobile when the stretcher is positioned to receive a person to prevent the person from coming in contact With the side of the automobile and also to protect the finish of the. automobile from chafing or scratching. The panel 10 may be constructed of rubber or any other material suitable for the purpose and its length is shorter than the board 6, terminating at one end where the head rest 8 forms onto the board 6. The head rest 8 has rigid panels 13 and 14 hinged thereto, the panel 13 being located on the same side of the board as the panel 10, while the panel 14 is located at the end of the head rest. Rigid panels 15 and 16 are hinged to the opposite side of the board from the panels 10 and 13 and are provided with marginal flanges. The panels 15 and 16 when disposedvertically from an outer side to the structure and when swung downwardly and outwardly from the automobile permit a person to be readily placed on and removed from the board 6. The panel 15 is supported from swinging outwardly from the automobile when a person is reclining on the stretcher by .a depending position.
The panels 10 and 13 may be folded down upon the board 6 or the sack 9 resting upon said board and the end panel 14 may be swung overthe panel 13. The panels 15 and 16 are then swung over. the panels 10, 13 and 14 completely collapsing the device and forming a comparatively broad tread surface on which a person may step when entering or exiting from the automobile. A hinge 15' is shown in Figure 9 which consists of three leaves hinged to one another. This type of hinge is employed for connecting the panel15 to the board 6 so that the panel 15 may be folded over the board or allowed to swing downwardly into Suitable catches 18 are carried by the running board to engage with the panel 15 when in a folded position to prevent displacement of the panel during the use of the automobile and when the stretcher is non employed.
While the stretcher has been described applicable to a running board of a motor vehicle for the purpose of comfortably conveying a person in a reclining position, it is also to be understood that this stretcher at any time may be detached from the running board and employed for a camping cot, berth or the like.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be -made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as claimed.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A stretcher comprising a baseboard secured to the running board of an automobile and supported in an inclined position, side panels hinged to each side of the board to be folded over the latter or extended vertically relative thereto, and means for supporting the panels in vertical position. a
2. A stretcher comprising a baseboard cushioningly supported on a running board of an automobile and having a portion thereof disposed over a fender of the automobile and inclined, panels hinged to opposite edges of the baseboard, and means for supporting the panels vertically and for releasing the panels for folding on the baseboard.
3. A stretcher comprising a baseboard terminating at one end in a head rest and cushioningly supported on a running board of an automobile, side panels hinged to the baseboard, side andend panels hinged to the head rest, said panels foldable over the baseboard or arranged vertically relative thereto, and means for supporting the panels in a vertical position.
4. A stretcher comprising a baseboard terminating at one end in a head rest and cushioningly supported on a running board of an automobile, side panels hinged to the baseboard, side and end panels hinged to the head rest, said panels foldable over the baseboard or arranged vertically relative thereto, and flexible cushioned elements secured to the side of the automobile and extending over one of the side panels and secured to the running board.
5. A stretcher comprising a baseboard having an inclined head rest, means detachably and cushioningly supporting the baseboard on a running board of an automobile, panels hinged to one side of the baseboard, straps carried by one of said panels and detachably connected to the side of the automobile, rigid panels hinged to the other side of the baseboard, said panels foldable one upon another onto the baseboard and means connected to the automobile and engageable with the second-named panels for supporting them vertically with respect to the baseboard.
6. A stretcher comprising a baseboard having an inclined head rest, means detachably and cushioningly supporting the baseboard on a running board of an automobile, panels hinged to one side of the baseboard, straps carried by one of said panels and detachably connected to the side of the automobile, rigid panels hinged to the other side of the baseboard, said panels foldable one upon another onto the baseboard, means connected to the automobile and engageable with the second-named panels for supporting them vertically with respect to the baseboard, and a Water-proof strain resisting foldable cover on the baseboard.
