2 Claims.
This invention relates to a combined container and reflector for photo flash lamps.
The photo flash lamp is a recent development and is used to facilitate the taking of ash light photographs and comprises a bulb similar to an electric incandescent lamp bulb containing a combustible material which when ignited gives an instantaneous, intense white light. The bulb is usually provided with a screw base which fits the standard socket so that when the bulb is screwed into a socket and the circuit closed, current passes through the base to leads which cause an ignition element or resistance adapted to becomeheated to a temperature sufficiently to ignite the combustible material. This material usually consists of crumpled, extremely thin sheets of aluminum foil,lother light giving substances may be used but the aluminum. foil has been found the most practical.
As stated a photo flash lamp is provided with a standard base which makes the device practical if it is to be used within reach of a standard socket. When using the lamp for the taking of pictures where no commercial current supply line is available it is the practice to use a hand battery casing or holder having a socket" to t the base of the lamp so that the battery holder with the lamp thereon may be held in the hand and the lamp operated or flashed by means of the usual thumb switch or button as provided on the usual flash light battery outt.
When using a photo flash lamp it is obviously desirable to direct as much of the emitted light as possible toward the object to be photographed and it is desirable to use a reflecting surface for this purpose but it is not always convenient to provide a reflector or to hold it in position.
It is an object of the present invention therefore to provide a photo flash lamp with a practical and easily applied reflecting surface.
Another object of the invention is to provide a reflecting surface which may be expeditiously and conveniently supported in properl relation to a photo flash lamp screwed into a socket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a photo flash lamp container, the cover of which is convertible into a reflector.
Another object of the invention is to provide a container for a pluralitynfphoto flash lamps and a hand battery casing, the cover of said container being arranged for attachment to the casingin position to serve as a reflector for a photo flash lamp, and
Another object of the invention is to provide a container for a plurality of photo flash lamps adapted to serve as a combined shipping carton and reflector. f
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be more clearly understoodrby reference to the following description together with the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective enlarged view of the container shown in Fig. 1 but with the cover removed;

Although the present invention is shown and described herein as including a flash lamp battery casing it is to be understood that the invention broadly contemplates the utilization of the container or part thereof as a reflector and if desirable the same may be used when a photo flash lamp is operated cn ordinary lighting circuits.
A practical embodiment of the invention ls shown in the accompanying drawings and may comprise a shipping or storage carton 10 having a receptaclebox l1 and a cover 12. The cover may be of any convenient or practical design having side flanges and may be provided `with an extended flap or flange 13 having an aperture 14. 'I'he box 11 may be of any con- 110 venient size and may contain, as shown. in
Fig. 2, three `wrappers 15' containing photo vflash lamps 15. The container is so proportioned that a rspace or pocket 16 is provided to receive a flash lamp casing 17. This casing 5 may be of any suitable form and may be provided with a socket 18 to receive the standard base 19 of the photo flash lamp.
A carton of three or more lamps may be sold together with the battery and when a .lamp is to be used the socket portion ofthe battery cas,- ing may be inserted into the aperture 14Y which is of such dimension that it willesnugly flt or may be screwed over the external threads of the socket, 18 thus the cover will be held as shown in Fig. 3. It is to be understood that any suitable means may be employed to secure the cover 12 to the socket, the meansl shown being preferred on account of simplicity and cheapness. The aperture 14 may, if d irable, be of such dimension as to llt the bulb neck and have a friction fit. It has been found preferable, however, to make the aperture of "such diametrical dimension as to screw onto the outer threads of the socket on the battery casing.
When the reflector is attached to the socket a photo flash lamp 15 may be screwed in place and the assemblage may be held by the grip 20 of the battery,casing 7 and the lamp flashed by a manipulation of the switch 21.
The cover4 or reflector 12 may be made in a variety of forms as shown in Figs. 4 to 7. Fig. 4 shows a cover 22 with semi-cylindrical surface 23. Fig. 5 shows a cover 24 in which the back reflecting surface 25 comprises two flat surfaces. Fig. 6 shows a cover 26 with a plurality of flat surfaces 27. Fig. 7 shows a cover 28 having a deep and large area reflecting surface 29.
Fig. 8 shows a modied form of container 30 in which a plurality of wrappers 15' containing photo flash lamps 15 are disposed, and in which space is provided to receive a flash light battery casing 17. The cover 31 is provided with an aperture 32 which is attached to a battery casing as shown in Fig. 9 when the photo flash lamp is to be used.
Fig. 10 is a modification of the cover shown Fig. 8 and is shaped with a curved reflecting surface 25'.
In Figs. 11 to 14 a container 33 is shown in which the entire box may serve as a reflector. An end 34 of the box has an aperture 35 to receive the socket 18 of the flash lamp battery casing 17. The container 33 is provided with a cover comprising two swinging doors 36and 37 and sides 38 and 39 of the box are expansible by reason of slotted flaps 40 and Apins 41. 'I'hus when 'the box is usedas a reflector as shown in Fig. l13 the side walls 38 and 39 may be extended thus increasing the effective reflective area in 'conjunction with the doors 36 and 37. This ---container may be of any desired size but by having the box to hold these lamps as shown, the cover is proportioned of the proper relative size to serve as a reflector.
Obviously the box or the surface to be used as a reflector may, if desirable, be covered with a more highly reflectivernaterial than the white paper or the metallic insert might be employed. It is to be understood, however, that such modications as utilize the container structure as a reflector or modifications thereof, are within the spirit and scope of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimedis:
1. A combined container and reflector comprisinga receptacle to hold a plurality of photo flash lamps and a battery casing for operating said lamps, a cover for said receptacle, said cover having a projection provided with an aperture for the insertion of said battery casing casing for operation.
