, 10 Claims. (01. 221 -60 .My invention relates to improvements in a container having a quick detachable sealing cap, and particularly to containers of the flexible tube type, for shaving cream, tooth paste, paint,
cement, and the like.
The object of my invention is toprovide a container and a sealing cap arrangedto form a perfect seal for the tube, without the use of cork, or rubber, disks located between the container and the cap. 5
A further object is to provide a cap which can be readily operated with one hand'when'attaching and removing it from the container.
A further object is to provide a container with a head having a side discharge opening, and provide the head and the cap with coacting sealing facing surfaces for tightly closing said openmg. I
A further object is to provide a, container with a 'head having a side opening, and a cap comprising pivotally associated ,jaws, and also provide the head with means for insuring the jawsbeing placed upon the head in the proper 1 radial position for sealing the discharge openms A further object is to provide-the cap with stops for limitingthe opening movement of the jaws, and also provide the container with an elliptical head, so that the cap cannot be placed on the head unlessthe pivotal axis of the. jaws is nearly parallel with the longer axis of the elliptical head, whereby the. spring. actuated jaws will properly adjust themselves upon the head for closing the discharge opening.
Referring to the accompanying. drawing;
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a portion of-a container and cap, embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the cap, detached.
4.0 Fig.3 is an inverted plan view of the cap.
Fig-4 is a plan view of thecap. I
Fig. 5 is a vertical section of the cap, as 0 line 5-5 Fig. 1, showing the container in elevation. I
45, Fig. 6 is a vertical section on line 6-6 Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is a sectional view'of the cap, with the jaws open, and a front elevation of the container. t a
Fig. 8 is a plan view of the container and showing the jaws of the cap in dotted lines.
In the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 10 represents the container of the flexible metal tube type. A head 12 is formed upon the container and is provided with an elongated slit forming ajdischarge opening 13. Thehead is formed with a protruding. convexed, outer portion 1 i. Said head is also provided with an annular recess 15, and an annular collar, or shoulder 16. The head 12 is elongated as shown in the-plan view Fig. 8. w I The opening 13 of the head extends laterally relatively to the longitudinal axis extending through the head and the container, as shown in Fig. 6, and said opening is located on the 6d. shorter axis of the elliptical head as shownin Fig. 8. The eonvexed'head 12 is provided with a facing surface, or valve seat 17 surrounding the'opening 13. I I e The cap 20 comprises two members, 21' and70... 22, pivotally'secured together by a shaft 23. Said members are formed with jaws 25 and 26, and handles 2'7 and 28. A spring 29 embraces the shaft 23 and acts uponthehandles and tends The handles are to close the jaws together. provided with . lugs forming stops 30 and 31, which engage for limiting the opening movement of the jaws. 1
The jaws 25 and 26 are provided with recesses 32 and 33, which recesses are formed with inner 8o.
convexed surfaces 34 and 35, which. have the 7 same contour. asthe facing surface forming the valve seat 17 on the head 12 and will tightly seal the opening 13, as shown in Fig. 6.
The jaws 25 and 26 are also provided with inwardly projecting lips '36 and 37 which embrace the shoulder 16 of the head and hold the cap upon the head, as shown in Fig. 6.
Fig. 'lillustrates that the stops 30 and 31 will engage and prevent the jaws opening sufiiciently if.
to allow them to embrace the head 12, when the pivotal axis, or shaft 23, is at right angles to the longer axis of the elliptical head 12, thus the head, by the action of the spring 29, and
properly seal the opening 13... I
A container and cap constructed according to,
my invention can be readilyoperated, as the cap can be applied to, or removed from, the container by pressing the handles 27 and 28 together, which can readily be done with the fingers of one hand, without holding the container in the other hand. The cap cannot be placed upon the head with the openings between the jaws extending 110.
over the discharge opening 13 of the head, which would permit the material to leak from the container. The elongated formation of the head insures the jaws being properly positioned radially upon the head, so that a facing surface of a jaw will cover the opening 13 of the head. The elliptical formation of the head forms cam surfaces against which the jaws are pressed by the action of the spring, which latter tends' to turn the jaws upon the head so that the jaws will fully cover and tightly seal the discharge opening.
