Claims.
This invention relates to door locks and has for one of its objects to produce a lock which will so secure a door that the door cannot be opened with a jimmy. To this end the latch ,member is carried by the jamb and the mechanism engageable therewith releasableV by means which also may retract the latch carried by the door.
A further object of the invention is to provide a lock which may be arranged for use with either right or left hand swinging doors and with doors which swing either in or out by simple rearrangements of certain of the lock parts.
Still further objects are to provide a lock of this type having a night latch arrangement by which one of the door knobs may be made operative or inoperative to release the lock, and to provide such a lock which is readily key operated.

As shown on the drawings, a portion of the mechanism is contained in a lock casing 20 which is mortised iiush into the edge of a door in the customary manner, and a latch casing 21, which is mortised flush into the adjacent jamb. A latch or bolt 22 is provided, this bolt being located in the latch casing 21 rather than in the lock casing 20. The bolt 22 is pressed outwardly as by a suitable spring 23 so that a considerable portion of its outer end projects beyond the jamb unless the bolt is pressed in'- wardly, as in Figure 9. Therbolt maybe provided with a pair of pilot latches 24 movable inwardly by contact with the end of the door as shown in Figure 7. The outer end portion of the bolt is recessed, as shown in Figure 6, so as to form shoulders 25adapted to be engagedby a keeper 26 located within the lock casing 20. The keeper is pivoted as at 27 on an ear 28 projecting inwardly from a side of the lock casing. A similar ear 29 is mounted on the opposite side of the casing for use if the lock is to be adapted to a door opening in the opposite direction as illustrated in Figure 10.
A suitable spring 30 is provided to press the keeper 26 into position to engage the shoulders 25 on the bo-lt22 in the manner indicated in Figure 8. The keeper 26 may be made with a comparatively narrow body portion 31 on the =i= have sufficient clearance behind them to allow for swelling and shrinking of the door. When the bolt is thus engaged by the keeper, the former is positively held against retraction into the latch casing 21 so that retraction of the bolt by means of a jimmy is thus prevented. 'As long as the bolt projects across the clearance between the door and the jamb, and into the lock casing, it is impossible to open the door.
` According to the invention, mechanism is provided to release the keeper from engagement with the bolt and to thrust the bolt back `into the latch casing against the pressure of the spring 23 so that the door may be swung open. To this end an actuating slide 35 maybe employed, this member being illustrated in perspective in Figure 12. As therein shown, it may comprise a vertical plate 36 having a stiffening rim 37 around three sides thereof.' To the fourth'side is secured a facing plate 40 which nts in an opening 38 in the face 39 of the lock casing 20 which is nush with the edge of the door. The facing plate 40 prevents entry of dust or other foreign matter into Vthe lock casing when the door is open. The face 39 may be provided with a striker portion 400 for the latch. This opening 38, as shown in Figure 2, is made in the form ofga C, leaving a tongue 41 projecting from one side of the wall 39. The facingplate 40 is likewise in the shape of a C so as to t within this opening. When the keeper is pivoted to the ear 29, as in Figure 10, the facing plates 39 and 40 are inverted as is also the latch casing'21 with its bolt.
At the end of the vertical plate'36 remote from the facing plate 40 is a neck 42 which extends rearwardly and terminates in a cross.- head 43, the ends of which vare guided between pairs of ribs 44 formed on or secured to the innersurfacesvoil the side walls of the lock casing 20. The bottom edge of the facing plate 40 inlike .manner slides on and is guided by a rib 45 von each side wall of the lock casing. The

The actuating slide 35 is also adapted :to vbe operable through the use of a door key. To this end a lock of any convenient construction may beprovided, such a klock being;illustrated at 70. The lock.may be provided with a projecting arm 75 adapted to be swung by operation of a key in the lock. When the door is shut the catch or bolt is pressed against the teeth 86 which are thereby separated sufficiently for the bolt to pass therebetween, whereupon they snap into the recesses 88 and act as a keeper to prevent,withdrawalgo the bolt except by actuation of the slide 50, either` by turning :one of the door knobs or by turning the key.
To reversethe lock it is necessary onli7 to reverse the face plate and to shift the night latch to engage in the other knob arm 54 to provide for right, or left, in or out swing oi the door.
Certain embodiments of this invention having thus been described, it should be evident to those skilled in the art that various changes and modications might be made therein without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as dened by the appended claims.
I claim:
l. A door lock comprising a rotatable knob, a latch element for mounting in a door jamb and spring means for yieldingly holding said element projected outwardly of the iace of said jamb, means mounted in a door for enclosing and holding against retraction the projecting portion of said latch back of the edge of said door when said door is shut, and means carried by the door and actuable by rotation ci said knob to release said holding means when the door is to be opened.
2. A door lock comprising a rotatable knob, a latch element for mounting in a door jamb and spring means for yieldingly holding said element projectedoutwardly of the face of said jamb, means mounted in a door for enclosing and holding against retraction the projecting portion of said latch back of the edge of said door when said door is shut, and means carried by the door and actuable by rotation oi said knob to release said holding means and to eject said latch from said door and into said jamb to permit the door to be opened.
3. The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said latch to extend outwardly of said casing, of a door lock casing having an opening in its edge face to receive the projecting portion of said latch when the door is closed, a keeper carried within said lock casing for interlocking engagement with said projecting latch portion a rotatable knob, and means actuable by rotation of said knob for releasing said keeper from said latch.
4. The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said latch to extend outwardly of said casing, of a door lock casing having an opening in its edge face to receive the projecting portion of said latch when the door is closed, a keeper carried within said lock casing for interlocking engagement with said projecting latch portion, and means for pushing said latch back into its casing to permit the door to be opened, said pushing means including a rotatable knob, a face plate having a portion movable inwardly from a position hush with the remainder of said plate to the interior ofthe lock casing, said portion substantially closing said opening when in its flush position, and means actuable by rotation of said knob to move said plate portion outwardly rto its flush position.
5. The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said latch to extend outwardly of said casing, of a door lock casing having an opening in its edge face to receive the projecting portion of said latch when the door is closed,'a keeper carried' within said lock casing for engagement with said projecting latch portion, a member movable in said lock casing toward-and from a position in which a face thereof is flush with said edge face and substantially lills said opening, said member being actuable to move said keeper out of engagement with said latch and to push said latch out from said lock casing, a rotatable door knob, and connections from said knob for actuating said member.
6. The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said latch to extend outwardly of said casing, of a door lock casing having an opening in its edge faceto receive the projecting portion of said latch when the door is closed, said lock casing having a lug on each side wall, a latch keeper selectively pivoted to either of said lugs to swing into or out of engagement with said latch, a spring pressing said keeper into latchretaining position, a face plate for said lock casing having an opening to receive said latch and a portion extending forwardly of said keeper,V
said face plate being reversible in accordance with the position of said keeper, a slide in said lock casing movable to retract said keeper and then toV press said latch into its casing, said slide having a reversible face plate mating the opening in said casing face plate and engageable with said latch, and means for actuating said slide.

The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing recessed to form a pair of spaced alined shoulders, of a door lock casing having an opening in its edge face to receive said latch, a keeper in said casing having a body portion movable between said latch shoulders and an elongated edge portion for engagement with the inner faces of said shoulders to prevent retraction Vof said latch into its casing, and .means actuable to withdraw said keeper to permit retraction of said latch.

The combination with a latch casing for mounting in a door jamb, a latch carried in said casing, and a spring for yieldingly pressing said latch to extend outwardly of said casing, of a. door lock casing having an opening in its edge face to receive the projecting portion of said latch when the door is closed, a pair of spaced hook elements in said casing movable to engage in opposed openings in said latch to hold said latch against retraction into its casing, spring means for holding said hooks in latch-retaining position, said latch and hooks having cooperating portions causing said hooks to separate by pressure of said latch thereon as projected by its spring, and means actuable to retract said hooks to release said latch.
